Is anyone else eagerly waiting for the next FB & tC tour? I mean, I love the Pixies. They are my second favorite band of all time after Radiohead. But I have really only been listening to Frank's post-pixies stuff for a while now. I guess that me never seeing a Catholics show yet has something to do with it. I am super-hyped about getting to see the reunion tour in Minneapolis Tuesday and Chicago in the fall, but I'm also looking forward to next year and the hope that FB & tC will tour soon. You must understand.
to see the catholics live is an experience i must say. their lead guitarist rich gilbert is one the most amazing gutarists ive ever seen, no, the most amazing! especially when he brings out the ol' drumstick. and as soon as you see frank black for probably the first time in your life its like wow! the mans awesome.
ive seen the catholics bout 5 times when theyve been over here (england) and i need to see them again. theyre one hell of a live band.
be a shame if the C's disappear for some time. god i love the pixies but the catholics were what frank evolved into and i'll miss them.
I consider myself lucky to have seen Frank Black once, for the release of Dog in the Sand. When I saw him though, he was sans Catholics. The only other chance I had to see him was with the Catholics in Philadelphia the night his gear was stolen. That show was too close to Easter for me get there.
In short, I can't wait to see him with the Catholics.
There are many other threads to this effect. I saw what is currently FB&Cs last gig, hope it doesn't stay that way. Pixies will be interesting but it's a bit passe now, the last couple of FB&Cs tours have been fantastic, more please.
Aren't The Catholics touring later this year? Have they done anything in support for Show Me Your Tears? If they did I'll be kicking myself for not seeing him again. They put on one hell of a show, my God and Rich Gilbert is fucking amazing, my new guitar idol. I hope they tour again later this year or next year. They are a sight to see. I need to see The Breeders to some time. I should get a Breeders album too. When I'm done with my Frank collection.

They toured the UK quite extensively (and Europe too) in support of Show Me Your Tears, first time I've seen them here with a following that weren't just after Pixies songs.
I believe there are no plans for US promotion though, although I'd hope the the skeleton Pixies dates for the Fall US tour will be fleshed out with Catholics and Breeders shows in between.
Seriously though, I think the Pixies Reunion is a nice and cheeky cash in on the creds they rightly deserve, and I can't believe that it will spell the end for the Catholics, the Breeders, or even the Martini's (no comment on David's magic act...). If anything it will only mean that the Catholics receive an even bigger and more appreciative audience audience.
My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free
I have not seen the Pixies live and I am really looking forward to the Brixton shows. However I cannot see the actual music played at the Pixies shows being better than that at a Catholics show or a Frank Black solo show. I hope Frank makes enough money out of the Pixies reunion to enable him to continue to make the music he wants, but not so much that he packs up all together.
Maybe this thread is dead....but I'll just add that I totally agree. I am thrilled to be seeing three Pixies shows in November but that's only because I'll go see Charles no matter who he's playing with.
Here's hoping and praying that after his baby comes and after he rakes in some reunion dough THE CATHOLICS RISE AGAIN!!!!!!!
I saw the catholics twice, once in oxford and the gig was packed (radiohead and Adam and Joe were there apparantly) I saw them in a Birmingham venue too, depressingly they didn't sell enough tickets to fill the venue so they shut half of it off and shoved them in a corner, my friend and I couldn't get cose, so we sat right at the back drinking and enjoying the music, couldn't see a fucking thing, on the plus side though, the man walked past us to get back stage, I drunkenly tipped my drink at him and he seemed most amused, I think that was more to do with the fact I was so pissed I could barely sit on my chair
I miss the catholics; especially the small venues where uber-fans could get up close. However, this Pixies thing is for the best, and we should ride it out and enjoy watching our man finally get his props. -FranknWeezer
i hope every body who wants to gets to see the pixies at least once and then the catholics get back together. i saw the pixies two days ago and they were incredible but i miss the c's. unfortunately if they do get back together they will play bigger venues, the tix will be harder to get, and there will be even more people there waiting for doolittle songs and being bored during all my ghosts or something that they should be very excited about.
but i shouldnt complain. pixies or catholics or solo. i will be there enjoying it.
I just hope all the artists involved in all the bands end up doing what challenges them artistically. Also, since Frank and Joey are raising families... that might change their priorities, including the frequency of the tours. Maybe there is room for both the Pixies and FB & TC's... I do think it would be a shame if FB & TC'S don't tour again. Who knows??
not to get into this discussion or anything, but let me get into this discussion: rich gilbert is a pathetic guitarist?! obviously you haven't seen the man live! i'll agree that lyle's style translates better to tape than rich's, but rich blew me away a year and a half ago in milwaukee. i haven't been the same since!
Rich Guilbert is one of the most pathetic guitarist I've ever seen... Lyle, please return...
pas de bras pas de chocolat
The two have different aesthetics in their lead style, and as a guitar player I can appreciate both. It's a matter of taste...some would say Lyle's maniacally precise yet flamboyant style could be construed as a little cheesy...others might say that Rich Gilbert is a loose-cannon lead player with some sloppiness to his playing and a penchant for the occassional strange note. (I would consider both comments stupid, personally--they are both highly unique and skillful guitarists...Cult of Ray solos get me so very pumped, but so do the Pistolero solos)
but... Rich Gilbert is NOT a "pathetic" guitarist, by any means!!! the man is talented as all hell. what do you find pathetic about his playing, kathryn? pray tell
Workman's solo's on TOTY are killer....I've never seen FB live with the Catholics(saw him at the Olympia, Dublin, on the COR tour-he played at 12 AM!), but I'd like to...I'm sure he'll get back together with them for some shows after the current tour.
CARL. "Join up, conform and wear a different uniform!"
Rich gibert is definitely a bad guitarist: - he has no sense of melody in his solos: it's pure technique for the technique, seems like he's masturbating himself with his guitar on stage -he murders all the all FB and Pixies songs on stage - He stole the use of the drum stick on the guitar from Sonic Youth -and they use much better than him (viva Lee Ranaldo!) - He stole his haircut from Andy Warhol - He uses ugly guitars instead of THE Telecaster - He shows off - He's a jerk
This slam of Rich is nuts. He doesn't murder any of Frank's songs and if he did Frank wouldn't have him on tour. The drum stick thing goes way back beyond the Youth. And he most definitely not a jerk, as the many of us who have spent a few minutes with him can tell tell you.
Sometimes the things I read on this forum make me believe in the existence of alternate universes.
Ok... I will stop the provocation, but, honestly: you can't say that Rich is better than Lyle! I mean, just listen to TOTY! And Lyle was a really much more fun person on stage
Omigod! I leave town (and my computer) for five days and this is what happens! First of all, let's stop all this bickering and unite, people. Both guitarists are great in their own special way. Can we agree?
And PsychicTwin, good lord, you confused me with someone else because I would never never ever use the adjective "pathetic" to describe either of these guys or any of my beloved Catholics.
Grow up kids. Catholics touring again doesn't look likely anyhow. It was nice not to know what stands as the last ever Catholics gig (London, Shepherds Bush) was such or it would have spoilt the atmosphere. That was the first time I'd seen Frank where more people cheered the post Pixies songs than the Pixies songs, you felt finally he'd eclipsed the memory. Wonder if that in someway motivated him to revisit it. Or it could hav just been the $s.
