I can't imagine that you'd actually ever see them reinstate drafting... at least not around election time. :)

Soldiers aren't re-upping anymore. Others are breaking down or killing themselves. They're finding out the hard way that they're being shafted.
Check these sites for some interesting info: http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/ http://www.vaiw.org/
Not all veterans appreciate GWB, especially since he hasn't attended even one memorial service for a fallen soldier. |

No, I see this after the elections. If Bush gets relected I'd bet on it. Maybe even if Kerry get's in, just to fix the mess. |

Fortunately I won't be 18 for another 2 years so I don't have to worry about it. If I ever do get drafted once I'm 18, I'll for sure move to Canada or some other country (if I haven't already). There's no way in Hell I would ever go off to war; for one reason, I would never risk my life for the USA, and for another, I would never kill a person under the circumstances of war (or any circumstances except maybe self-defense).

One of my biggest fears all my life for some crazy reason was the possibility of there being a draft. When this whole Iraq shit started I was freaked...I was reassured that a draft was probably very very unlikely. My mom called me the other day when she got something in the mail addressed to me from the US Government...after she left me a message she realized it was my passport. Her fear rekindled my fear. A draft seems more and more likely the longer this shit seems to drag out and the more US troops seem to be killed. At the same time, yeah, it's election year, so it wouldn't happen till after election. At that point, if Bush is reelected, it seems somewhat likely. I'm scared out of my fucking skull. I'll do everything in my power to get out of it. I thought about seriously chopping off a toe or 2.

I'm 37. I had to register for the draft back in the Reagan days. When I turned 27 and was no longer eligible, I drank a six-pack in celebration. Hopefully you guys can do the same one day. |

I thought Kerry would pull our troops out? From what I've seen of him on the news (which is addmittedly not much) he sounds very anti-war. What would "fixing the mess" entail? Why can't all those guys just be sent home?
BTW, I turn 25 this august, I hope I'm in the clear if they ever do reinstate it!

In his memoirs the physicist Richard Feynman recommended for getting flunked out of the draft sitting and answering all the questions politely and sanely as you could, all the while picking imaginary dirt from your fingernails.
-- "You one of those right-wing nut outfits?" inquired the diplomatic Metzger. Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids." "They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also. "Us?" asked Oedipa.

I was against the war from the get go, but I think it would be a huge mistake for the US to pull out because the going got rough. We've got troops there for the rebuilding, as do many other countries, but who are we kidding, nobody so much as the US. They are law and order and about all that's preventing Iraq from descending into anarchy at the moment. And as the perpetuators of the war, I'd say it's America's duty to see to it that conditions ARE improved over there now that they've instituted a revolution.

I don't understand why there would be a draft within the next couple years. It's not like the US is in great need of troops, are they? How many have been killed in this war? 1000?
Maybe I don't understand the point of a draft. Well, I have 3.5 years til I turn 25... dang...

Yeah, but the other guys are finishing their terms and not returning. And you've got to think that guys who were planning on joining after high school are now considering a different career path. C'mon, they've already been sending National Guardsmen over there!

What are Kerry's plans, exactly? Does he have some sort of goal of gradually removing American troops after trying to set up some sort of democratic government?

Gah! *YOU* don't say shit like that! I'm sure there are ways around it...I mean, I don't think they can really force you to go. I'd be a consciencious objector...I'd be living in the UK at the time too, probably. I don't even want to think about it. This really does seem to be just another Vietnam though. We have no business being there and it's just going to be shit piled on shit for years.
My mom made a great point today...these people have been under a tight rule for hundreds of years and now all of the sudden, they're free...what the fuck are you to do at that point? They have no idea, it's total anarchy...you can't just fix this overnight. It's not about fixing the country it's about fixing the minds of the inhabitants. How realistic is that? It's like opening doors to a freakin prison!

I'll be 20 this year. I think it's funny that you don't have to join the army and there's no draft, but when you're 18, you have to register for selective service. Sounds like a hush hush version of a draft to me. I don't think they'd take me anyway, I have a list of health problems a mile long.
I don't like war, I would never want to go, and I don't agree with Bush's policies or his whole adminisration for that matter. But if my country called me, I'd go. I mean it's that or jail time. America does have a lot of flaws, but it's still one of the greatest countries in the world.
The only thing I could say to you all is if you want to make America (and the world) a better place, vote. Let's get someone in office who will get the job done - the RIGHT way. As far as a draft goes, you're all right in assuming that if there was going to be one, it wouldn't be installed until after the election, so the next president can save face.

Given the current situation in Iraq, I'd much rather be in jail for 5 years than be over there; if you don't value your life at all, however, going to Iraq might be a good option for you.
Looking at that article and what it says about not being able to go to Canada if you're drafted, I think everybody better move there while they still can.

The draft..... that would be harsh if it happened.

My dad had a friend who was able to fail his draft physical by getting his blood pressure and blood sugar sky high. But that was back in the Vietnam days. It probably wouldn't fool them now. |

Bush's budget increases spending on military personnel (i.e. specifically the payroll, not just general operating) from $26B in 2003 to $114B by 2008, with the largest jump occuring from '04 to '05 ($37B to $102B). I'm pretty sure that increase isn't just to cover raises for privates and corporals. More likely it's to pay for 1000s of new draftees.
http://w3.access.gpo.gov/usbudget/fy2004/fpaa.html (click on #5 "Defense") http://w3.access.gpo.gov/usbudget/fy2004/sheets/fpaa_5.xls
Note the curious enormouse increase in the federal budget for military personnel payroll in 2005.

i'd totally be a cosciencous (spelling?) objector - if someone were to look at my life, my career, etc., they would clearly see that war is not something i believe in at all and wouldn't be just hiding behind that so i can stay home. although that is a nice outcome

WHO QUALIFIES? Beliefs which qualify a registrant for CO status may be religious in nature, but don't have to be. Beliefs may be moral or ethical; however, a man's reasons for not wanting to participate in a war must not be based on politics, expediency, or self-interest. In general, the man's lifestyle prior to making his claim must reflect his current claims.
