I got into Bossanova era Pixies first. So when i went and bought Come on Pilgrim and Doolittle, I hated all of Come on Pilgrim and about half of doolittle. I thought "why is he whining so much, and what's with all the spanish?" Stupid, very very stupid. Young and naive I suppose. |

I used to really dislike (not hate, but dislike) Ed Is Dead and I still don't get Down to the Well. Besides that, everything's between a B- and an A+ as far as I can tell. |

Nimrod's Son used to annoy me, cos I was envious that CT could play it so damn fast. Wicked song though.

My first post here so I'll say hi....HI. Right pleasantries out the way. I managed to see the pixies in 89 and 91 (I think) and I have to say having listened to their music every week (if not every day most of the time since) I cannot think of a single track I would skip past. I put this down to being bombarded from all angles by mainstream pop sh*** like Craig David or whoever else is deemed hot at the time. It just makes me thankful that I appreciate real talent.

I used to hate Alec Eiffel with all my heart, but now it can really hold my attention. Still dont like the synth stuff. All Over The World used to be one of my bottom two, along with Build High. Still hate Build High but I love All Over The World. Top Ten. Another example is Santo. When FB is just singing weird words, before Kim comes in with 'Saaaaaaaaanto'. Used to hate FB in there, but now its what gets me to listen to the song. Only the Pixies can do that to me.

This morning in the shower I was dancing and singing with "Here comes your man" (probably the only Pixies song that is possible to dance) I remembered that I use to hate it at the beggining.
You know, coming from COP and SR I didn't expect this poppy style. If it's the only Pixies song you have ever heard you don't know anything about who are the Pixies.
But with some time I have learned to love it.

I dance to all of them although it looks less like dancing and more like I'm having an eppy

Broken Face.
I never liked the beginning line: "I got a broken face, uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh oooh." I thought the voice was too high and that it just sounded silly.
For years I avoided the song. A few months ago, I was listening to a live CD and the words "speaks no English" got stuck in my head. I was disappointed when I realized they were from Broken Face, because I thought the line sounded great. Anyhow, I listened to the song and decided I liked it all (although the "uh-huh ooohs" still weren't my favourite). On some live versions when he didn't use such a high voice, I just loved the whole song straight through.
My wife even stopped talking when Surfer Rosa came to track four because she knew how crazy I was getting about the song. And by the time I got to see them this spring, the song was actually high up on my list of songs I wanted to hear them play (and on a side note - they actually played my entire wish list). |

Bam Thwok At first I was a little skeptical but the more I list to it the better it gets. Now I really like the song after like 10 listens. It sounds very B52s and the amps. Which both are good but I just was expecting somthing different I guess. Alec Eiffel Skiped it at first but now it is one of my favs.

Slightly askew of this topic:
A very good friend of mine - and a fully-versed Pixies fan - once admitted to me that she had never, and didn't ever want to listen to 'Silver'...
Slightly taken aback I asked why? She explained that someone had once told just how beautiful the song was, and fearing disapointment had put off listening to the song till she was 'ready', not wanting to risk spoiling a 'perfect' album. Over years this idea had now built and reinforced itself into this odd(mad) quirk; playing the album and lifting the needle over 'Silver' every time. I had apoplexy, as that song to me is just about as good as the Pixies ever got, and the tension and release to Gouge? ..... etc.
Anyhoo, one night about three months later she arrived in the pub almost weeping with joy saying "I've listened to it.. I've listened to it." and spending the shole night mesmerised by the experience. It seems it lived up to any expectations she had had.
On the specific topic though: 'Eric Eiffel', used to say it was the only track I didn't like, now I can't claim that about any track.

I can't stand Silver. There aren't a whole lot of Pixies songs I can remember reall hating and then having them grow on me. Most of them I liked initially and then they only got better with repeated listenings. I think maybe Debaser, for a long time I had no idea why so many people ranked it as one of their favorite Pixies song, it just didn't seem to have the oomph of a song like Gouge Away, but eventually it grew on me as much as the other songs.

i used to gloss over Ed is Dead and I've Been Tired. EID is now one of my favorite songs....great rythm and build up into the chorus. IBT after seeing the live performance on the DVD. lyrics so stange and so black francis.

Well, my college creative writing professor said that a piece should explain everything within it. Not that I necessarily agree with her, but she might not have been too fond of "Bailey's Walk." (Personally, I love discovering additional information about songs.)

I didn't really dislike "Down to the Well" ever, but ever since I heard the BBC version for the first time, it's really grown on me.
