These are my two favorite pop artists : the most inventive distorted pop composer and the most eloquent lyricist in the world. They were the two major artist of a decade, and pretty much influence everything today.

In my opinion, they didn't only revolution the music, they created their own universe, and today, you can paint a Frank Black influenced picture, you can write a Smiths influenced novel, etc.

Their cooperation project was aborted after Frank made a declaration about Morissey's solo work in a newspaper. On the other hand, Frank has publicly apologized, and I'm pretty sure these two artists have much respect for each other's work.

Both of these artists are pretty much in the same situation (a former band etc), and I think that their fans are pretty similar (I am the living sign). If you use economic definitions (that's what I study) you would say there are many synergies to explore through a merger.

My point is : these two guys will probably never contact each other to work together. They're not the kind of guys who will hold hands in front of the crowd on a Charity concert.

Soooo?

Well, I'm pretty sure we can do something about it on this forum (which is a very good forum). Don't misunderstand me, I like the Catholics, and I like the current FB solo work, so I don't want him to quit. But this cooperation could really be something nice. I don't know if you other guys (and girls) agree, but it would be a true pity to stop everything because of a stupid declaration.

What is Ken Goes doing? Pixies reunion = easy cash flows, that's OK with me. The Frank/Morissey project is riskier, but it can also be profitable, and I think that it's an initiative that every decent music lover will be enthusiastic about (er, is my English correct here?).

Come on guys, let's make this happen.

What?? What did Frank say?

I don't know about a Frank/Morrissey colaboration. They may come from similar scenarios, but really, their music is rather different. I don't think they'd mesh well. OR maybe, that's what could make it fantastic. I don't know. I'm just looking forward to whatever Frank does after the Pixies reunion.

Caveh Zahedi: You also mentioned in an interview years ago that you would love to do a duet with Morrissey. Did you ever pursue that at all? Or meet him?

FB: No. I have met him actually, but I don't think that'll happen.

CZ: Did you like him?

FB: Yeah, he's a very nice guy, super nice, yeah.

CZ: Why do you think it's not going to happen?

FB: I just think that I'm probably not his cup of tea... and there's nothing wrong with that, you know what I mean?

CZ: Yeah, sure.

FB: I had said something when I was very young, or younger I should say, and very new at doing interviews, and I had said something negative about his first solo album in an interview. And I wasn't even that serious about it, you know, I was probably smoking pot at the time. Anyway, Morrissey reads all of his music press religiously, and I think he read that. And that kind of... because there was some talk about us working together. I don't think it was his idea but it was someone at the record company... Anyway, that's how I got to meet him. And I think that he sort of nixed it because I had made this comment, and rightly so. I mean he was just defending his own art. He didn't need some little like punk rock guy telling him that his record was no good. (Frank laughs) So I don't really blame him at all. Anyway, I feel bad because I didn't really mean it. I was just shooting off my mouth and I had probably heard his record one time and you know it didn't turn me on right then and there so... But anyway, I've learned a lesson ever since and I don't say negative things about other artists anymore, even artists I truly don't like, and I happen to like Morrissey a lot, but even artists that I really can't stand. I definitely don't say anything negative about them in interviews because it might get back to them. Some people get really offended because it's close to them and they can't help but being offended. I suppose I'd be offended too.

CZ: Really, that seems strange to me. I mean, someone might not like something you do and you can still be friends with them.

FB: Yeah, but it's not like that I think with making music. I think it's a lot more personal for people. It's their baby. It's what they're most paranoid about. It's what they love the most but it's also the thing that they're afraid of the most: "oh am I really any good?" So it's really hard to hear something like: "oh so and so can't stand you're new record." You're just totally getting them in the Achilles heel.

CZ: That's true.

FB: Anyway, once again, for the hundreth time, I totally apologize. If Morrissey is reading "Mommy and I are One" right now, again I'm totally sorry. (Frank laughs)

Frank and Morissey... a weird combination, yet makes sense to me.

I heard Morissey's new album will be more rock, so if he hooks up with the Pixies later this year, great!

Well Frank obviously didn't listen to Suedehead propperly the first time because there are a few brilliant songs on that album. I'm glad he said sorry for the bad lip he gave it. Every Day is Like Sunday will forever remind me of afternoons doing school homework.

The idea of a Frank/ Morissey colaboration is quite good. Frank should send the boy some flowers..........

As a fan of The Smiths and Morrisey I have to agree with you Monsieur Adnan.Frank's contribution to David Bowie's birthday celebration resulted in a winner combination for me.Joining forces with Morrisey would also be a winner combination,I can imagine Frank singing: "THE LAST OF THE FAMOUS,INTERNATIONAL PIXIE" Ha Ha Ha!!!!Rock On!!!!

OK, I understand what you meen, it must be different in the UK, because here, the Smiths are not so famous, and people who like the Smiths are not compulsive fans. When I was living in Sweden, I hung around with some Smiths fans, and these guys quickly become pathetic. However, I really love the Smiths!

However, there is a big difference between the Smiths and the Stone Roses. I even see them as two opposite sides of the indie pop.

Never heard anything from The Smiths. Quite strange because I'm kind of a curious guy in music and I like to discover "old" things. In fact I believe it's because I hate Les Inrocks (french awful so-called rock magazine).

I just read that Morissey will be banning the sale of hamburgers at all his shows. Said 'it would be hypocritical to sing 'Meat is Murder' to the smell of meat.'

I think that's great. =)

Smiths were one of the predominant indie singles bands (they had some classic albums too) of the mid-80's. They fell right inbetween early 80's post punk (Joy Division, Wire) and the the indie-rock of the mid to late 80's (REM, JAMC ext).

It's generally melancholy music, albeit usually catchy and up-tempo. I've always been a casual fan, but their production always lacked a slight punch, to me. It is all very clean and smooth and though the lyrics tackle some good controversial stuff, my problem with The Smiths is that their music was never quite dangerous enough for me. Still they were one of a kind and had great album covers. And there are some intense-uber Morrissey fans out there, which is cool.

But--definitely check them out. There's a chance you'll love them.

heh, you would!

I've never been much of a Smiths fan myself. I've heard some of their music and it didn't really have an impact on me. Not like the kick in the teeth of the Pixies or anything. As Itchload says, it's not quite 'dangerous' enough. Maybe I'll get around to them one day.

I have to agree that Morissey is one of the great lyricists of popular music. Its amazing how such intelligent thoughtful music became so commercially succesful.
Also, don't knock the rest of the band, they were pretty good too...
If you're new check out This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now, anything off Hatful Of Hollow, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now... In fact, pick anything at random, its all good!

I was a big Smiths fan. Meat is Murder is a good newbie album to listen to. Its catchy, easy going music. The hamburger ban makes sense, though it would be weird for them to do that particular song live.

Well, the Smiths DID sing Meaven knows I'm miserable now, but not all their songs are depressive...Some of Morissey's lyrics are very funny (like "Handsome Devil", I already posted it in the favourite lyrics thread, "Let me get my hands on you mammary glands" or "You ask me the time but I sense something more" are really funny. "There is a light that never goes out" is a depressive AND funny song ("if a double decker bus crashes into us to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"). I think that with humour everything is OK. I hate Radiohead or Jeff Buckley, because they keep whining but they have no distance between them and what they're singing, like Morissey has.

Once again, I understand that it must be different in the UK, but here in France we just consider Morissey as a musician that he really is.

Rémi, you should really try the Smiths. I hate Les Inrocks as well, they're just a bunch of assholes full of shit. For heaven's sake, they live in Brighton!!!

Although Frank could do a Pin-Ups type album a la Bowie...

My album might look like this (keeping it mainstream):

The Smiths: There Is A Light
David Bowie: Teenage Wildlife
Bob Dylan: One More Cup Of Coffee For The Road
Iggy Pop: Five Foot One
The Rolling Stones: As Tears Go By
The Beatles: Helter Skelter
Leonard Cohen: Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
Roxy Music: Prairie Rose
T-Rex: Cosmic Dancer

Actually, the Frank B-side 'Announcement' has very Morrisey-ish vocals; I wonder is it meant as a pastiche or if Frank wrote it with Morrissey in mind.

Down by the beach today / Not out of sight / Just out of mind and memory / Blind like the time before day/ And after the night / The Reverend, he came to say / There is the white / And there is the house that claims him / Beyond the waves of the bay / Between water and light / I’m watching between the grey / For something not right / Just out of mind and memory / Blind like the time after day / And before the night / And if I’m right / The Earth in flight is not the problem

This summer I must go to the Hultsfred festival again...Pixies and Morrisey playing in Sweden at the same time and place...too good to be true almost...I had a vision: (there wasn't any television)..just my own vision of Morrisey joining Frank and the Pixies on stage singing the lead of Debaser...that would be jävligt coolt (good fun) as we say in Svedala..
I think of Morrisey in sunglasses going "Got me a movie o ha ha ha"...hehehe
