Some time ago I made a poll with the question 'Best solo career, Charles or Kim?' There's more than 100 votes now and Charles is losing! I don't think I like that outcome and I just wanted to ask you to pay a short visit to http://www.pixiesmusic.com/forum/index.php?showforum=8 , and to cast your vote if you feel like 'cause most FB fans are on this forum so the outcome is not a good representation. Well , that's it. Vote Frank! |

I have voted Frank just now. The Breeders is not bad, but sometimes I feel bored of them. FB's works are really full of variety, I'm excited by them whenever I listen to.

what is best solo career? kim sold more copies of one album frank had at least 7 more albums than kim had kim didn't tour that much frank toured the whole world but kim played for 150,000 people once what's better? frank moved away from indiepop, but showed that he was a faboulus writer no mather what genre he played (like kristin hersh said on the dvd) breeders were THE indiepop act around Last Splash-era
what's better?
I still voted for fb though

My take:
Selling more copies of an album - Britney sells more still than both put together, but that doesn't make it good.
More albums - Presuming you think both are good and are deadlocked (if one was a clear winner, why would you be evaluating these factors?), then more of a good thing is better.
Touring - Not really sure that this makes a difference either, though Frank playing small, cool gigs instead of 150,000 people ones is probably an advantage.
Indie-pop - again, not really relevant unless, as Jop later says, you consider staying in that one genre vs diversifying. Again, FB wins this hands down.
Seems that FB's holding all the cards. Not to say I don't like the Breeders, I do, but FB is the clear winner.

Solo career? Has Kim Deal ever had a solo career? They're both great. |

I am surprised there is even any debate over who has the best (or shall we say, most interesting) solo career.
Though I don't think it really matters who has the best one.

sure, kim has released many less records than frank, but quality-wise all of kims have been top-notch, whereas some of franks have not been.
of course this is all subjective, but if i was to rank their post-pixies records from beginning to end, kim's 3 would probably occupy in higher positions than franks, with pod on the top.

Give me a break, this is apples and oranges. Best based on what? You can't compare quality or quantity or anything like that. If it means anything, Title TK was my favorite album of 2002 (over BLD and DW). Frank's own solo career is definitely not one dimensional as far as style goes. I think they both kick equal amounts of ass.

but then so is saying that franks better than britney. but then we all think (and know) that....
just because it's not "provable" doesn't mean it's not worthy of discussion.

Just voted for Frank and the scores are equal now.
In my opinion you should base it on how you rank the songs not the albums. In my opinion Frank would have 9 out of the ten best songs. I would put him level pegging against the Pixies too. |

I love toxic!!! The surf guitar the (fake?) strings the beats, even the singing. Britney Spears songs are often written by intelligent songwriters if you ask me

Yes, I think all the things I said were unrelevant, I just wanted to show it's difficult to say who's better. Unless, you are guided by your own taste, which I tend do to...
One more point: Frank really went solo but Kim was still in a band that was once a side project are the breeders her solo project? I doubt it, she even said in a documentary that she doesn't like to be a singer/songwriter type but wants to be in a band, that's why it took so long after Last Splash she couldn't get the right band

I remember the thrill of hearing Frank's first solo album after the Pixies split. Since then he has entertained me with lots more brilliant records. The same with the Breeders. I am just happy to keep on getting good records from both. No need to compare, they're both huge talents and will continue making good records.

What is this, 1993?
The Black Breeders would be a really terrible tribute band name. |

Easily Frank. Just cast my vote. As I said there, the Breeders are great, but nowhere near as unique or inspired as FB stuff. Only my humble opinion, of course.

Of course people are going to be biased toward Frank Black since this forum is dedicated to the man...I'm sure Kim would be getting more support than FB on noaloha.com....they are both unique in their own way. |

If we are talking about popularity, Kim is without discussion the winner. Frank and she will be agree at that point. If we talk about music quality, all will agree (And both Kim and Frank) he is the Man.

Me like the Breeders, but there music doesn't make my brain work too much, it's candy to my ears. On the other hand, frank sends me in a whirl, so much going on, you need more than one listen.
frank vs breeders. frank vs kim......frank pins......1..2..3.....it's all over. frank wins. again. and no biase. no aloha. love them both. |

Nope. Just replying to a thread I haven't read before. And I had a little something to add. I'm bored, it's late and not much else to do tonight except sleep. So thought I'd scan the archives of my favourite site, if you don't mind that is?
If you got a new thread on the man and his music, much appreciated. |

Hello, I just joined the forum so I thought this would be an apt place to begin discussing. There's no point in talking about, at this point on this forum, who the better artist is because it's pretty clear that Frank is. But, I really do love the Breeders, too. And the one Amps album is really awesome along with it; it's solidly good music but it didn't realign my universe like Teenager of the Year did.
If anything, Kim Deal's career has been hampered by a lack of ambition; what I hear when I listen to her things is a person making good music who is capable of way more if she pushed her ideas forward. So that's my take- enjoyable music, but Frank is more enjoyable because he's doing something that's challenging himself to write better songs and make neater sounds. Way more whole-hearted. |

I love Franks Solo stuff, Cult of Ray is classic, and as a song writer i think Frank is second to no-one, including the lovely Kim Deal whom is pretty sweet but Franks the man! |
