I was just listening to "Places Named After Numbers" and realizing what an incredible acoustic guitar sound FB and EDF got on that record. I've been doing acoustic tracks for my band's EP lately and i'm quite envious of the sound.

I have found that a good condenser mic that picks up the right frequencies can give you a very rich acoustic guitar sound indeed. I have a Peavey condenser (don't remember the model) that I picked up for about $150... I use it for all my acoustic guitar recording. It just gets this richness that picks up every little nuance, and even that "fingers against the strings" sound (if i want it to, that is.)
A good condenser could be just the thing you need for some rich, full acoustic tone on record... |

Playing an acoustic guitar makes you a protest singer.
Everything is new. |

Believe it or not, I learned English thanks to the Smiths and the Pixies (AND Vanilla Ice, but please don't say it to the others).

I love all the acoustic guitar sounds on that album. I've been jealous of them for years. I've tried working with the condenser mics. I just need to find the right one with the right room.

I'm actually not too fond of that. I personally think it sounds to mechanical and fake (even though I don't know that it is). I'm more partial to the guitar sound on "Ludwigshafen".............man, that is a great song. What do you think of THAT guitar sound relative to "I Heard Ramona Sing"?

As mentioned in another topic, I think he uses a nashville tuning on some songs from the debut.

You usually use the high strings from a 12-string on a 6-string....and I think, as variation, you can tune the high E in unison with the B(I know FB dose THAT particular thang on 'Ramona'!)....or something! I think he uses a kind of nashville tuning on 'Old Black Dawning' and 'Brackish Boy'.

i've recently been playing "brackish boy" on my banjo and it sounds great IMHO - when my band plays its first gig in april i think i might take a solo and do that with just me and the banjo

a lot of times when i have an acoustic playing as well as electrics, bass, etc. I'll do a signifiacant cutting of the lower-mids, and even the midrange. When micing I'll focus more on the zingy overtones from the fretboard (sometimes the spot varies according to what key your in). I'll often add a nice large condenser on the body just in case we decide to go with mainly acoustic, but I often end up ditching that when I want just the shimmery part. Let the electrics take the midrange.
I have always admired the"Places" sound. That shimmery acoustic very well could be Nashville. Tends to help with the clarity - it blends very well with the low notes of the electric (is that Joey on the electric?). |

I think it's Joe Santiago on the electric.

Acoustic guitars are for folk singers, i.e. sissies!
Naw, just joshin'. You're right, that's one kickass acoustic sound.
