Today's random song of the day is Dog Gone.
What do you think of it?
lyrics I could not pray I felt so dog gone Couldn''t get no witness but I did not know Then a voice in a whisper said you''ve got to carry it on
And the news is gonna break The news is gonna break The news is gonna break that I am here
Out along the way I got so bogged down I had some business there I did not slow And a boy in the world said you''ve got to carry it on
And the news is gonna break The news is gonna break The news is gonna break that I am here
I''m not a messenger I''m not the passenger Got some business there but you did not know And the point of my visit, well sir, that''s to carry me on
And the news is gonna break And the news is gonna break Yeah, your noose is gonna break when I am there
No Paris No Nepal No Barstow Won''t be none of them at all
No Congo No Kish or Kishangargh No Memphis It doesn''t matter who you are
I''m on my way I feel so dog gone Go ''bout your business but you did not know And the point if there is one, well sir That''s to carry me on
And the news is gonna break (your noose is gonna break) The news is gonna break that I am here The news is gonna break that I am here And your noose is gonna break when I am there

First song I heard from the Catholics era. Frank played it acoustically on a French radio short before the album was released (ie March '98), along with Humboldt. I love it.

not massively keen on the album version, but when i heard it acoustically, it sounded great.

The intro reminds me of Los Angeles ("I met a man"), but I like this song more. That spooky prophecy of the earth ending. And the "news" "noose" changeup is awesome.

The "noose" change-up IS great on there.
I thought I heard somewhere that it was about a comment his wife made about one of their pets or something. Like she would rather have the world destroyed by a meteorite than lose their pet. Then he wrote a song about if that happened. Anybody else heard this? |

Such a wistful, beautiful song. A nice change of pace on FB&C self-titled, to boot.

Funny...I was singing this song to myself today. A catchy song with some excellent backing vocals. And that's really all I have to say about it.

Back when the only Frank album I had was TOTY, someone I knew from the Internet put this song on a mix tape for me. I don't remember being that impressed at first, although I liked the "the news/noose is gonna break" part. Eventually, however, I grew to like it a lot more. There's a very melancholy sound to this, which works quite well. It's probably my second favorite song on FB&TC, after "All My Ghosts."

At a show I saw yonder in 1998, before playing "Dog Gone" Frank actually mentioned on stage that the intro's similarity to "Los Angeles" sometimes threw him when they played it.
FB & the C's is the last FB album that had to "grow on me". I wasn't into it at first, but I immediately liked this song. It was the first track that hooked me. And the single, with all the cover songs for the b-sides, is rockin'. |

The version from the Sweedish radio broadcast a couple years ago is the best version of this song I have ever heard. When he sings "break" it sounds like he's about ready to cry. I, of course, think it has something to do with god because if you spell it backwards you get dog, and the general message of the song to me is about losing faith or never having had it. I adore this song, it's beautiful, one of the best ever.

What do you get when you cross an agnostic, a dyslexic and an insomniac? Someone who stays up all night wondering if there's a dog.
(don't pay attention, I'm talking to myself)

This song finished 71st (out of 157) in the 3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003(this event involves ranking all songs in order, averaging each others rankings and counting them down backwards....add beer and it makes for a fun-filled day of FB) comprising all released FB songs from FB S/T to SMYT.
Great song - pretty sad, i love the "no kishorkishingah.......no memphis..." bit. |

A wonderful tune, one of my faves. I read somewhere it was about the loss of his wife's cat. |

I loved "Dog Gone" first as a Memphibian, later as a FB fanatic, and finally as an aficionado (from afar) of Christianity. Beautiful, luxuriant song. |
