Assuming that most of you have good taste in music, I thought it would be funny to expose our humble concert going beginnings.
Def Leppard
I guess we all had to start somewhere! Not all of us are lucky enough to be able to say the first band we saw were the Pixies. By the way, I'm still looking for 1 Minneapolis ticket. ( iamjacklighting@yahoo.com )

I am proud to say that my first show ever was seeing Frank Black on his first tour. It's still my favourite concert memory. I met the man and got his autograph and the guys from Reverand Horton Heat who were openning hung out with me and my buddy after the show and poisoned my 15 year old body with beers. I think that was only like the fifth time that I ever got drunk but it was the best. I think about it now too that if I was in a band touring and I met some little kid I would be like fuck off but they were totally being cool with us and hanging out.

Oh yeah ... and I saw the first Frank Black tour too, my buddy and I stopped in the middle of traffic outside the Vic in Chicago to tear a piece of tape off the cab of a semi parked in the street, labeled "Frank B Inc. Private Carrier." A roadie cornered us in the alley to yell at us. I still have that piece of tape to this day. |

New Order, 1987. Great show. I'd love to see them now, playing some Joy Division tunes. |

The year was 1979 or maybe 1980 and I was an 8 year-old sugar-cereal eating survivor of the disco era (I have the Boney-M 45 to prove it), the chant was "Disco's In The Garbage".
Our town had its first Rock'n'Roll FM radio station and they brought in current bands like Cheap Trick (with an unknown group named Loverboy, if memory serves).
I was singing "Dream Police" for months after.
Hey, they're coming back to the same arena in May! With Aerosmith! |

1980 - Men at Work at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver with 6 or 7 kids from my grade 3 class.
First concert without adult supervision was David Lee Roth in early 1986, I think Cinderella opened up.

My first show was Gwar at First Ave. 1995 I think. Never really been a fan of Gwar's music but I'd have to say it was probably the most interesting show I've seen. If you don't know who Gwar is, they wear these crazy costumes and spray blood and other assorted bodily fluids over the crowd. I wore a white t-shirt in and a blood red one out. It's more like sick and twisted theater. When I saw them they ripped apart the body of Jerry Garcia and threw it out in the audience. I remember my mother being all nervous about me going to my first concert...oh if she only knew. Here's some pics: http://www.gwar.net/media/pics/oderus/pics.php?gwarsid=dd6cf0e7e474f3921acc682a5828087f |

I love GWAR. I have to say, even if you don't know GWAR, you must see them live. That having been said, I think "Scumdogs of the Universe" is a classic album, and everybody should own it.
My first concert was B.B. King, when I was 8 years old at Bumbershoot in Seattle (where I grew up). I saw many concerts as a child because of the yearly Bumbershoot festival there. The first concert I went to on my own was Motley Crue. First without any adult supervision was Alice in Chains/Slayer/Anthrax/Megadeth when I was 12.

Sorry to say Phil Collins in '86. (My friend wanted to go) But that was followed up by two or three U2 shows and then the 4th or 5th show I ever saw was the Pixies at Avalon (or was it called Citi then) in Boston the night before Thanksgiving in 1989. I had tried to see them earlier at the Paradise in the summer of '89 but it sold out on me.
Oh yeah, I saw John Cougar Melloncamp at the Boston Garden in 1988. Lonesome Jubilee tour. Don't snicker all you hipster doofuses, he was really good. Played like 3 hours. |

I THINK my first concert was seeing John Flynn for free in some outdoor venue. I guess you could say that my first real concert was Weird Al at Valley Forge Music Fair (a venue that no longer exists) in 1996.

My first was an indoor day festival in Dublin called Sunstroke(!) with Soundgarden, White Zombie and Mudhoney. Frank had played the year before with Ice Cube and RHCP. Soundgarden were stinking drunk and since it was my first concert I had nothing to compare it to, but on reflection I´d have to say they sucked. White Zombie have a place in my heart forever after that afternoon though.

1976, 3 years old, dancing the baby-dance, squat-stand-style in the aisle at a Willie Nelson concert, making everyone around us crack up.
Apparently I was quite the ham. And/or everyone around us was stoned.

New Kids On The Block...seriously. Pathetic.
First rock concert was more or less a festival...89X Birthday Bash in Michigan (local radio station, bunch of bands...headlining that year was Screaming Trees)
First proper rock concert was Frank Black, July 8, 1999.

Mine was Feeder in 1998 or 9 I think. Mmmm. Interestingly enough, Muse were 3rd on the bill. They sucked, but played a Husker Du song.

First international band was Status Quo! They were one of the few bands willing to perform in South Africa in '86. It was a horrible show and they're a horrible band.
My very first live show was a local band called Cinema in '84. It was exciting at the time but they made crappy music.
I'd say my first propper live show will be the Pixies, Brixton, 2004!

I think I was at this show when they came through Vancouver, it was during Musicwest and they played at the Town Pump, it was awesome! On a sad note bassist Dave Blood recently took his own life. you can post any memories or condolences at their official site.

1986 REM's Life's Rich Paegent Tour was the first concert I paid to see.
The Dead Milkmen at SDSU was probably the 3rd or 4th. |

I am reasonably confident that it was The Sisters of Mercy at Liverpool Royal Court on 6th October 1984. A fantastic gig.

my first gig would probly have been a local NZ band 'the feelers' whom i saw many many times in '97 + '98... they were fantastic back then. not so now, but they're still going and their last 2 records have been produced by Gil Norton.
my first international artist would have been Yo La Tengo in 1998. it was fabulous. and my first concert in an overseas country was FB at the Astoria, London last year.
