Some of you have probably heard of South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin Texas. Leading up to that weekend Dallas gets a lot of those bands playing. Here is a listing of those bands in Dallas this month.
I would love any recomendations/warnings/descriptions regarding any of these bands. I plan on seeing a bunch of shows since I wont be going to Austin this year. Thanks in advance for any help.

| Hmmm, well thanks for the 'bump'! The Gypsy Tea Room is one of the better venues in Dallas, you can be proud. One of FB's haunts when he comes to town. Although I could list about 10 different places he has played here, all clubs. |

I will try and offer some help. Here goes.
Modest Mouse are often mentioned on this site in glowing terms, so I guess they must be worth checking out.
Von Bondies' new album is excellent so check them out (nice girls in the band too  )
I have been told to look out for The Walkmen so there my well be something in that.
The Sleepy Jackson are interesting, especially live I believe.
I have heard the Constantines album once but it sounded pretty good.
Broken Social Scene are a new English band that have been compared to the Pixies but I have only heard one song which was good but not of Pixies class (obviously).
N.E.R.D are a band I really like but you have to have a little appreciation of some Hip Hop, funk and soul as well as rock 'n' roll to appreciate them. I really do like them though, as a change.
The Cooper Temple Clause are excellent live. I definately recommend them.
But the best band on that bill for me is Stellastarr* by a country mile. But then I am a HUGE fan!!!

Don Caballero and Calexico are great. The first has mp3s and info available here:

I haven't liked their more recent stuff (last album) as much, it's something intangible, and I may get over it, but overall this is still one of my favorite bands (that's a huge list though).
The other stuff I mostly don't have any idea, although there a few I don't really care for. I think a lot of them are on epitonic.com as well. The mp3s are free there.
I listened to Broken Social Scene on their website http://www.arts-crafts.ca/bss/ , so you might want to check that out - I know there are some people on the forum that like them.

For Thursday: don't know either of those bands.
Friday: I used to like The Silos, but I haven't heard much of them lately. My own fault for not keeping up with them. Punkish / countryish; good band.
Saturday: don't know.
Sunday: Don't know.
Monday: Go see the French Kicks / Walkmen / I Am the WTC / Paper Lions show. None of them are favorites of mine, but all are very solid bands.
Tuesday: Out of all the bands mentioned, go see The Decemberists. A friend of mine went and saw The Unicorns and said they were really, really boring, and he liked the album even.
Wed.: Go see the Polysics. <b>FOR SURE</b>. I can only <i>imagine</i> what their live show is like, but their records are absolutely frantic, fun, and nothing short of excellent. The band Mahjongg is pretty good, too; they're from my city (Columbia, MO).
Thurs: Can't say I like Trans Am or The Fever, and I've never heard of the Rogers Sisters, but The Von Bondies are excellent.
Friday: Don't know any of the bands.
Saturday: "Eh," to all of the bands mentioned.
Sunday: Not really familiar with any of the bands, but I have some friends that adore The Wrens and TV on the Radio.
I'm not familiar with the rest of the bands.

I've heard a song by Los Lonely Boys, but I wasn't that impressed by it.
Mike Doughty was the lead singer for Soul Coughing. I saw him open for They Might Be Giants a few years ago, and he was all right, but not great. He might have improved since then, though; that show was just him with a guitar.

I'd check out Calexico, the Decembrists are very well received critically, John Vanderslice is great too.
Avoid the Unicorns, as someone said. Very meh.
I'd check out the Constantines too, though I've not heard them.

Flogging Molly is a punk rock band with an Irish sound.
Then on the same day TV on the Radio, they covered Mr. Grieves. A couple songs on their EP Young Liars were pretty good.
I don't know which one though would be worth actually seeing in concert, unless you could be assured TV would do Mr. Grieves. |

BSS and John Vanderslice are absolutes musts. Isn't Britt Daniel doing a solo acoustic show somewhere? I'd check that out.
The Walkmen are pretty great, I'd go to that. Summer Hymns are quiet and melodic and very nice, the Wrens are kind of a cult-hero type band (not exactly my faves, but pretty good), and the Unicorns aren't too shabby, I'd go see 'em.
The Von Bondies pump out some hard rockin good times, get ready to groove. If you're not into IDM or Laptop type stuff (eletronic noises, blips, beats and the like), avoid Odd Nosdam and Gogogo Airheart.
Check out Don Cab if you like math rock/prog rock, and TV on the Radio made a pretty nice little EP, I haven't heard the full length yet.
I really, really wish I could go to this. That's an extremely solid lineup. |

Since you can't make it to Austin to see Baboon on the 17th. Check out Earlimart instead. 5 p.m. at Good Records. There CD "Everyone Down Here" was one of my favorites of 2003. Besides I hear the folks at Good Records are nice.
