I realize this another totally non-FB-related post but heregoes;
This may sound silly to some but I was totally distressed, today I ran over a squirrel.
We've been having some nice weather and these critters seem to be out in droves and let me tell you they don't use the crosswalk either. So Chip ran out and I hit him by accident. I have never hit anything before so I pulled over and got out to see most of the back end of this poor little vermin squished flat and stuck to the road. But to my horror it was still alive (obviously not for too much longer) and flipping right out. I knew it was dying and didn't want it to suffer so I bashed its brains in with the heel of my boot :(
What would you have done? |

fuck! well you did the right thing putting it out of it's misery! not sure i would have had the guts (no pun intended) to do that myself... i probably would have tried to run over it again to finish it off...
yikes though! that's going to give me nightmares!

My Dad was recently telling me a story about a friend of his and him having run over a cat years ago, and how they tried everything to put the poor thing out of its misery - they eventually had to put its head in a plastic bag with the exhaust pipe.
I would do the same thing you did, Carolyn, but I would probably be a blubbering mess for a good while. I also wonder what I would do with the creature's remains if I ever hit anything. Especially a deer. Would it be right to eat it (assuming it doesn't have any communicable diseases)? Should I give it a proper burial?
I accidentally stepped on an Assassin bug that was following me around my studio for months - everywhere I went to move, even the most unusual places, like reaching for a book I hadn't touched in a year - there he was, lookin at me. So he was kinda my buddy. I walked right over him a couple weeks ago, and I cried. I seem to ba a little picky about when I feel for an animal or bug though. We have some big ol' fat groundhogs in our yard, just huge and wobbly when they run, and I get a hankerin' for chasin' em and scaring the crap out of em now and again. Next day I feel all kindly to them. Go figure.

I hope what I said didn't come across the wrong way. I didn't think it was funny at all. Maybe I'm reading things into what you said floop. Paranoia! it ain't pretty.

i was about to ask the same thing! i had images of a bug trying to assassinate apl4eris for ages, hiding out in these great spots, only to be found by apl4eris every single time time... and then to be foiled at the last moment, when she stood on him! lol!

It's this carnivorous lil beastie that has a sharp tube for sucking the guts out of other bugs. They sometimes bite people. They're really cute, and walk like slow-motion robots. I was laboring under the ignorant assumption that it was a soldier bug until a few weeks ago. Glad it didn't attack me, heheh.
This picture looks really similar to the type we have. When we were painting my hubby's studio, they kept walkin around gettin paint specks on their heads. That was last summer. I just saw one the other day with a speck of white paint on his head - they must live a long time.

A friend ran over a rabbit and had to do the same a couple of years ago. I dunno...would a vet have looked at it? But then it probably would have been too late. I reckon putting it out of it's misery was the best move.

Wow..that sucks....i don't know how i'd react..i'd have a lot of difficulty killing another animal, even if they were suffering...yikes... Makes me glad i get around by bike 99% of the time.
Still tho, the little guy no doubt had a life a million times more fulfilling than the animals most people pay to have raised and killed. =(

You did the right thing.
Heh, once I ran over a pigeon on the freeway. It landed in the middle of my lane and began walking. I was going about 65mph and couldn't swerve out of the way. I tried to center it between my wheels (I was in my Volvo 122 with plenty of ground clearance) but the bird sped up just as I approached it. It got crushed by tires on the right side of my car. It was almost comical. The remains were pretty flat the next day when I drove by.

Don't sweat it, C, squirrels are like gross vermin dressed up in fluffy clothes. That was probably kind of harsh, but really, sometimes these things happen. I once knew a guy who decapitated a dalmation in his car, then slapped his girlfriend cos she was freaking out. He bragged about it for weeks.
Just be glad your not a complete smeghead.

I can't read this thread, just from the first post I almost threw up...then I had to read the fucking thing about the cat and now I'm about to cry. I once hit a cat, and I cried the entire way home. I couldn't stop, no way, I'm not strong enough for that. I'm sorry, Cat, but I can't handle something like that. I hope it died right out and didn't suffer. Now I'm really going to cry. I hate the thought of animals suffering...it's always been something that really kills me inside. I remember crying and screaming over my dead birds...god, I feel numb.

Hmm, I probably went for the tabloid-esque 'sensation over actual fact' here. He was driving and hit it, and knocked its head off with the force of the impact. Its not like he 'accidentally' killed it, Highlander style... There is a possibility that he'd been drinking, I always refused a lift because of this problem. He was a psycho, and well known for his road rage, so I am in no way defending him.

I applaud you for having the courage to finish it off; I think I would have panicked and just watch it die. The only think I ran over was a chipmunk. It ran out and I swerved but apparently I swerved to hit it :( I went back to look for it but couldn't find it for some reason and I was late for work so I didn't have a long time to look. I ended up writing about it cause I was so sad. I think I would have cried if I were you Carolynanna.
I saw a Turkey get hit on the highway once. It flew straigh up in the air then over the barrier into the opposite lane. We could see the feathers floating down in the rearview mirror for a long long time. My mom and dad couldn't stop laughing about it but I was desperately sad.

this reminds me of one of the truly saddest things i've ever seen in my entire life (no joke)..
** warning - jim, or anyone easily disturbed, this is some pretty sad shit:
when i was driving cross country out to Baltimore at the beginning of last year i was going through the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and noticed a long trail of skid marks approaching me on the road.. as i got closer, i saw that the tire marks led to a HUGE deer, clearly dead, laying in a pool of fresh blood.
that was enough to bum me out in itself.. but the really horrible part: just off the side or the road i noticed a cute little baby deer, all by itself, looking confused and staring at what was obviously its mother..
that really pushed me over the edge. i was bummed out for the rest of the day, and periodically through my whole trip. i think it's one of the saddest real-life things i've ever seen. i didn't even want to tell my girlfriend about it becasue i knew she'd be waaaay sad. me, i'm a tough-guy. i can take this stuff. but you know girls.. they get all sensitive and shit.
anyway, i'm sure that baby dear found the strength in his or her self to push forward and move on.. maybe start its own family.. travel, win awards.. etc.. etc.. i'm sure he or she is doing fine. yeah.. |

Day before my birthday last year I was coming back to the house over the wastepatch where the gypsies have their bonfires and saw from a distance one of my neighbours cats doing this unnatural jerky dance, and nearing I saw he'd been struck by a car which I hadn't noticed go by, I don't really pay attention to cars. He had been mauled absolutely and I lifted my shoe, just about to do the same thing you did, when I saw his chest stop moving.

Yeah I was on a coach in Poland that hit a cat and when I looked back I could see it twitching like mad, like it was posessed. Luckily it stopped soon after so I guess it died. I love animals too much to be dealing with that kind of thing, and to make it worse, cat's are one of my favourite animals.

reminds me of once when i was uber-young and walking out to the gate to catch the bus to school and seeing one of our cats (we had 13 at the time) squished dead on the road. Seeing dead things never bothered me from living on a farm, but the freaky thing about it was it was a family pet, but mainly cause its eye had popped out of it's socket and was hanging down its face.....the image will live with me for the rest of my life.
also, my mum once ran over one of our other cats while reversing out of our driveway. it didn't die right away, and was making the scariest noise i have ever ever heard. 2 of my sisters ran inside a hid in our parents bed while my sisters boyrfriend ran up to our grandparents house to ask for some bullets to go in the gun that we had (but we had no bullets). unfortunately, Campbell (the boyfriend) was new on the scene and had never met granddad and granny so the request of some stranger holding a gun for some bullets at their doorstep did not impress my Grandad one bit. to cut a long story short, Campbell never did get any bullets, but Matilda (the cat) had died by the time he got back anyway.
it was all very traumatising.
