Guess what song just randomly came up on my MP3 playlist? That's right: "Flowers On The Wall," by the Statler Brothers! No, seriously, it's "Pray For The Girls."

One of the main reasons I love Frank and the catholics work is because they keep making tons of music. This is not common, and i think it is golden. Thanks Frank. |

Yeah Frank, this looks amazing as there are alot of songs you've included that I have not heard, and a few I haven't heard of. The list looks great, the only thing I would suggest is adding John The Revelator, as I remember you playing that live in London back in August 2001, and it blew me away.
Fairplay to you asking us for feedback, what a gent!

Hey Frank, how about sticking to the original list, and then at a date sometime in the nearish future releasing a single with live versions of Sister Isabel, Dirty Old Town, John The Revelator.
Man, I never thought that I'd say this but you are cooler than that Black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks, John Shaft!

Did I already post that both discs should be included in one-a-them single jewel cases? I think I did, but maybe not. They should be. Please don't make them separate, cause I'm runnin outta shelf space. |

John the Revelator is such a great tune. I'd love to see Frank and the boys record a version with an old fahioned fire & brimstone Gospel choir, hands clapping, feet stomping and singing the chorus. That' be getting into the Blues Brothers territory, but I still think it could work. |

I am v.happy that the 4 iTunes tracks have been included, resolving the unavailability problem [for me, and all non USA-ers] plus "belle isle" & "some things" makes this a great comp CD. Thank You Signor Frank!!
btw I assume the reference to "live" means "to 2-track" as opposed to "in concert" .. would that be right?

Heh, yeah, I definitely agree with that assessment. Be sure to let us know if/when you get a chance to pop in You Ain't Me or Hey the FB/Pixies tributes or the b-sides I sent you in Feb.
How about Duke of Earl for Snake Oil? I love your cover of that.

Glad to see Frank Black is contributing from time to time. As fans, we need that. So thanks, Frank.
Regarding rumors of FB&C's demise, I hope the band becomes FB's Crazy Horse. They're too good of a band to discard. I saw the Pixies in '90, FB in '93 and '94 and a few times since '01. I loved the Pixies in their day (and hope to get a ticket, but Mnpls. is already sold out -- s***!), but these days I play FB&C a lot more. I'm 33 and the Catholics' music is a lot more relevant to me. As much as I loved them, the Pixies is a band particular to a particular time and I don't know if I want it to return for more than a tour. I don't mind if the band gets a payday, but anyone whose seen an old girlfriend after several years knows that the past can't be recreated, only remembered. That said, it's understandable if some band members must move on. (The Catholics are one of the tightest, most satisfying bands I've ever seen, however.)
Regarding songs for release -- FB, would you consider releasing some concerts, ala Pearl Jam, on the Internet? I'd gladly pay to download via eMusic, iTunes, or even private FTP, recordings of certain concerts. I took my older brother to the Shank Hall, Milwaukee concert in '03. I got my heart broke at the Minneapolis show the next night. I'd love to have these shows and several others for my memory collection without the ambiguous guilt (and often s*** quality) that accompanies bootlegs. |

Triakel, someone is bound to tell you so I might as well since I am here. go to www.hereitagain.net and you can purchase and download recent FB and the C shows. If you can access the wonderful FTP site the boys at FB.net have set up you can get many more live shows. |

Humboldt County is such a great song - i actually made a burned version of FB&tC's and stuck HCM on there - i dont know why it didnt make the album in the first place - though it's sound quality is a little below the album tracks.
And can i just say - i know this is not the right thread for this - but the sound quality on all of self-titled catholics record is wonderful. i yearn to hear some more of franks 2-track stuff recorded wherever, and by whomever, that was done. |

Is this thing still gonna happen? Any news on a release date? I really like this compilation idea a lot. For all I care they can cancel the Frank Black Francis thing...it sounds kind of like Paul McCartney doing Beatles songs with Wings. Honeycomb however....that I am excited about. |

I wish I could get my hands on Oddballs, let alone this planned release! I also agree with Triakel who prefers FB these days to Pixies. I saw Pixies at Brixton and although they were awesome, I just don't listen to them anymore. When I told people I had Pixies tickets they were really jealous, but I retorted with the fact FB&TC rock ass and they just turn their nose up. These people are insane!

Hey, Gang.
Thanks for the thoughts. It was what I was looking for. I'll address a couple of things. These compilations are CATHOLIC only. It must be live. It must be Catholic. Some other outtakes and demos were considered. The listed above are the best of what is in the Catholic archive in terms of b-side and bonus stuff. I mean, there ain't even that much there as we tend to release most of what we record. Certain songs that we perform in shows, like Sister Isabelle, Dirrty Old Town, or John The Revelator, we have attempted in the studio, but if it ain't listed here then what we have probably ain't that good. It's usually the singer's fault! Man oh man. We could do a boxed set of only botched Sister Isabelle. I think that was first attempted during Teenager Of The Year. We have beat that one into a pulp. Never seem to get a good one, although if I remember correctly the John Peel version with Teenage Fan Club is probably pretty good. Hven't heard it for a while. It sure is hard doing covers. But fun. Even when they're butchered.
We did consider putting them all into one package, but that seems A) too long and B) financially challenging. The good news is that I imagine that they'll be offered at special prices, although that is sorta out of my control. Man. I wonder what the labels are gonna say when I ask 'em to do another simultaneous release. They're gonna be pissed. At least the old band is getting back together and that'll give 'em a little something to take advantage of.
The main thing to remember is that this is archival stuff that is for Uber fans only. It is mostly previously released material, although a lot of it is kinda hard to find. Heck, I had a hard time finding copies of the stuff on CD myself here in the abode. And digging the tapes out of storage was quite a scene. Boxes of tape falling out of the sky. It sounds really good in the van today, though. I dig the 3-piece vibe on Do Nothing, The Big Hurt, and Going Down. Sounds like rock music to me.
FB
Doubly, triplee nice to hear you are actually paying attention to the fan thingy here. I've done these compilations for the most part and i pretty much have used them as a soundtrack for un-serene driving the past two years. lately i have learned to drive more serenely and dream of driving back west. the BBC sister isabel is good and i like it. a compilation of the juiciest live bits would be nice. i apologise for my ignorance as i haven't check in much but it sounds as i breeze thru this thread that some type of compilation in some form is coming out someway. -no time to check it all out. heard it was over 90deg.in portland yesterday!

I've seen FB&theC's 3 times and I only own 7 albums - can I still be an uber fan? I've heard a few of these B's at live shows, my ears are like stray dogs who consume all things frankblackian as if they'll never have another meal yet I'm cyberphobic so I only end up owning what sits in the racks of my pathetic local record shop awaiting my purchase, so keep it coming. Into perpetuity. |

Mr B. should really record "Dirty Old Town" when the vocal folds are ready for that tune. Is it a cover?
I'm a 4th generation Santa Cruz, CA "native" and last time he came through he played "Dirty Old Town" at the Catalyst (local club) and I couldnt think of a more appropriate song for the town! Damn chorus has filled a 2mb buffer in my brain and is now read only....
I met FB once in a dream (only artist before that was Tom Petty), he was fishing at a pond on my familys ranch with the Catholics and myself. All I can do now at least is keep the vodka shots chilled and the beer cold!!
Keep rockin it, I cant wait for these collections!

Yes maybe Frank could sing in French, I also found something else about the french title "le sigare volant", on the official Frank Black tabs page the name is suddenly "le sigre volant". What is a sigre in french or is it just another of Frank`s French "mistakes". Maybe by writing the french spelling wrong such as in "massif Central", he has a meaning. Maybe he is trying to trompe tout le monde. Can anyone help me out on this one? |

It's a mistake but not Frank's. The title is in fact "Le Cigare Volant" ("The Flying Cigar"). In the 50s, not all UFOs were saucer-shaped (if any). Some people claimed to have seen ships "the shape of cucumbers"... And someone came up with the phrase "flying cigars". The song is about a UFO incident that happened during FB's childhood.
