I think the "break up" was planned by the band. (This is a conspiracy theory and not to be taken seriously, like the previous) "Trompe Le Monde" translates into English (I believe) "Fool the World" or something like that. Right? And "Trompe Le Monde" is also the first song on the album. Right? And the last lyric of that song is "And now it's time to go away on a holiday." Right? If you're going to "go away on a holiday" you're going on vacation. Right? And if you look at the whole album from a symbolic standpoint, they "fool the world" right at the beginning. Go away on a holiday, then come back from their holiday/vacation and make a bunch more kick ass music. Yeah, it sounds absurd, and I'm sure many of you out there have thought the same thing, but hey. It gave me hope years ago that they really had a bigger plan and I'd get a chance to see them, even if I was just joking around. Either way, they did as they said. They went away on a holiday. Now they're back.

Doesn't that sound like a good reason to split up, though? I mean, they knew they were sitting on a gold mine. They had to figure out that even though they were just making music and having fun that they were actually rewriting modern rock. Why not make it look like they had a nasty break up, make everybody realize how awesome they are (hindsight is 20/20) if you didn't figure it out while they were around, sit back for ten years or so while their cult following gestates into a rabid fervor and then come back and say "hello?"

Yes, lets be brutally honest, who, male or female, wouldn't make sweet love to kim or frank. I thought having sexual relations with kim deal was every male pixie fans ultimate fantasy. This conspiracy theory is blagging my head, you are making frank black sound like tupac.

I always wondered if one reason they broke up was because of resentment that Nirvana came along and did a massive rip off of them and made bajillions more than the pixies ever did.

frank loves making music and likes to change things around to keep things creative and exciting. and that means playing with different musicians from time to time. the media loves to spin anything and imo i think the breakup wasn't that bad.
prozocrat- like your tlm theory of going away on a holiday. aren't some of the themes on tlm about leaving and going on a new journey.

let's not flame Jean, but you know I think it could have something to do with the divorce I ended something, lot's of things change, and he could use some money. But hey, I think this goes a bit too much in his private life. (although he said in interviews that he doesn't really care about that)

I thought about the fact that Frank was living in California during his marriage. California is a community property state, so when he got divorced, his ex-wife got half. All that touring money with the Catholics, half gone. He always said that he would reunite with the Pixies if someone in his family need a liver transplant or something. I wouldn't be surprised if he’s getting the Pixies back together as a way of making up some of the money he lost in the divorce. She can’t touch anything he earns outside of the marriage. Only during the marriage. He always prided himself as being a good businessman, especially when it came to keeping touring costs down. Maybe this is a purely financial decision. Nothing wrong with that. It’s a product that I’m gonna buy.
I’ve also thought it might have something to do with the ex-wife also. You know how you can’t talk to ex-girlfriends (for the most part)? You know nothing would happen, but just out of respect for your current partner, if you see an ex-girlfriend walking down the street, you just ignore them. But once you break up, what’s the problem with talking to an ex-girlfriend? Know what I mean? Maybe he know feels free to play with the Pixies and something about his wife was holding him back. I know she is good friends with Joey’s wife, so who knows.
I don’t mean to gossip though. It’s ugly.

Wait, I want in on the totally baseless speculation too. I think Kim and Charles are planning to have a kid who will grow up to start a band with Kurt Cobain's kid, and Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's kid. Sadly, they will be the worst band in the history of the world. |

Are you planning something with her?
On the other hand, does someone know Mr. John Murphy. He's a mysterious guy. Why they married? I can't figure this girl had married so young.
P.S.: Is this correct English? |

I knew someone who know John Murphy. Does that count? He was still playing in bands in Boston like 9 years ago. I think he would play in these kind of out there, almost joke bands. |

Here we go. John Murphy played in Mente. Here's some info:
Mente was "The Worst Band in Boston" from 1989 to 1994. You can visit Mente at www.geocities.com/mr_mente. Founded in 1978, Mente was the brainchild of John Murphy, later to be known as Ron Bacardi. Prior to 1989, Mente was a recoding-only band of un-talented goofballs, with an occasional appearance by a real musician. From the beginning, Mente focused on writing as many songs as possible in the hopes that one may actually turn out to be good - the give a million monkeys a typewriter theory in action. Early efforts included "Hoverin'" and "Manolete". Beginning in 1989, Mente hit the professional circuit in Boston and Providence, building an audience of misfits and drunkards. They hit their zenith in 1990 with such songs as "Bobby Orr", "Scrod" and "Sex Poodle".
Mente Both Ted (Lord Rockingham) Widmer and Marc (the Marquis de Roque) Mazzarelli played in Mente, which was started by John Murphy (who happened to be Kim Deal's husband). He first imagined the band while in high school; some 10 years later, John and Kim met Ted and Marc in a bowling league in Cambridge and Mente became a reality. (Kim wasn't in the band; drummer Gringo Starr completed the group.) They were simultaneously Pixies' favorite band and considered the worst band in Boston! Among their songs was a tribute to Bobby Orr -- "the greatest hockey player in the world, bar none!" According to Ted, who was known as Edward Van Mente, "We wrote hundreds of songs, developed a wardrobe based heavily on unitards and old-lady gardening outfits, and got a pretty big fan base" before losing interest around 1991 or so. Ted and Marc continued playing together in two side projects, The Clamdiggers and The Paesanos.

Ted and Marc of Mente (but not John Murphy) were also in a band called the Clamdiggers, whose song "The Devil Went Down To Newport" was covered by Mono Puff. One of the B-sides on Mono Puff's single for that song is a cover of Frank's "Oddball." So it all comes full circle, I guess.
