looking at my local newspaper this morning, i saw this:
(if the picture doesn't come up: it's an announcement of the aeorodrome festival nearby vienna; bands are RHCP, metallica, slipknot, korn,... and finally charlie, kim, joey, david)
i don't know if i should laugh or cry - besides playing with shitty bands (RHCP, metallica, IMO) and real stupid and annoying idiots (slipknot, korn, german punk band "toten hosen"), the location is anything but awesome. i should know, i lived there for a long time.
wr. neustadt is a depressing town (industrial wasteland), south of vienna, and the place where the "festival" will take place is just a wide and open nothing. pink floyd and U2 performed there too, god only knows why. i suppose it's just there can literally be hundreds of thousands of people.
of course i would love to see the pixies, but the thought of being sqeezed between 200.000 heavily drunk metallica-, slipknot-, tote hosen- and korn-fans doesn't really make my day.
there are a lot of nice spots in austria, why do they have to perform in the most ugly and depressing one ?
they are just in'it for the money, i guess. i mean, that is okay, it's a job, everybody has to get along. i'm not cynical here, i really mean it like that, but somehow this announcement leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

There's the hills near Hopfgarten that would make an awesome place for a concert...

No no, it's in Austria, right on the Tyrol. Beautiful in the spring/summer, haven't been there in the winter but has some decent skiing from what I've heard.

oh, i see. well, that's the other side of austria then. austria is small, but it is still 500 km away from the actual location.
wiesen, also nearby vienna, would have been great. it's a small, free-air venue (~2000- 3000 people maximum), and surrounded by beautiful green hills. roger waters performed there last year. but no, they have to come to the shittiest place in our country. man...

Alright, alright, I won't make you AND Vienna at large drive 500k to see the Pixies. That does suck if they do in fact play there for sure and play craptown. Still, better than not at all I suppose. :)
