Is this true? Thats terrible... The guy was a fantastic songwriter and will be much missed. I only hope there's no disrespect of his work now that he's gone (we all remember Kurt, right?) If you don't know his songs, anyone, check them out, they're some of the most beautiful, poignant, bittersweet songs ever composed. Much respect

Didn't Frank mention an Elliott Smith song when he did this playlist stuff for the NME? I think it was called Needle In The Hay, and it was the only recent song in the list.

I got an e-mail about this today.
This is horrible. The guy had a lot of talent. Unfortunately, I was never very familiar with his body of music (I had heard a lot of stuff here and there, and from friends who were in to him) but nonetheless I am still saddened greatly by this.

Wow. I never was a fan, but it's a sad day whenever someone dies that young. My condolences.

God. How horrible. I love that song (Needle in the Hay) but it has always struck me as so sad...and now? Ugh.
Very very sad. |

I am not at all familiar with his work but to commit suicide at such a young age is trully tragic.

What a complete surprise. I only had his first album and it's great but I had never went out and got more because he seemed so young and so full of potential that I'd have forever to get into him....

Ok so I just made my own topic about this I deleted it, this is what I posted
But what a shock this is The musicworld has lost a talented man (I guess..)
I actually feel bad because a college friend of me just gave me a mixed tape of his music a few weeks ago and I haven't listened to it yet. I almost feel guilty to listen to it now, a crazy feeling, I don't know......

I haven't felt this bad since Jeff Buckley died. |

It is a sad sad day in music. Elliott was so talented. My favorite singer/songwriters. His most recently released album (Figure Eight) helped me get through a rough break up with my girlfriend. I'm very sad about this news. I suggest everyone pick up his cd's. Start off buying (Either/Or) or (XO) these are great but, I think everything Elliott Smith has done is incredible. I have a 7" that has two songs from the album he has been working on since 2001. Theses songs, Pretty(ugly before) and A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity are awesome. Sounds a lot like the Beatles (Revolver or The White Album). As I said before, it is a sad day in music. |

Everybody should go to mp3dimension.com and download "Behind the Bars" by Elliot Smith for free. Should still be there. Great song...as good or better than Needle in the Hay and/or Miss Misery. Sad to see him go. FB said that he cried listening to Needle. Sucks.

I'm a huge Elliott Smith fan and hope that there are a lot of Elliott Smith fans on this site as well. What a tragedy! He was so talented. Elliott has been playing on my itunes since I heard the news this morning. He has so many beautiful songs. What an incredible singer/songwriter we lost today. I was wondering what other people favorite songs by Elliott Smith are. My favorite songs are: Independence Day (XO) Angeles (Either/Or) A Distorted Reality is now a Necessity (Pretty ugly before 7") No Name #4 (Roman Candle)
Those are just a few but everything he has done is greatness! What are you guys favorite Elliott Smith songs?

Waltz #1 from XO is an incredible song, plus so many others.
I'm still in disbelief. His songs were so personal, so fragile, you really felt you knew him. Also, he had a lot of the same influences in music as I have, in particular the Beatles. This is devastating. I'm depressed. |

Its true, he was possibly the most openly personal songwriter I have ever heard. Even the songs directed at others you could feel were sort of directed towards himself. However, its important to remember (and easy to overlook now) that there were often many positive areas in his songs, but this certainly puts things into perspective. This is tragic, because of all the effort Smith put into clearing his drug/alcohol problems.

I burned XO from someone a few years ago and listened to it once. I just never got around to listening to him more. I just talked to a friend who said the same thing.
Maybe the poor bastard killed himself because no one ever "got around" to liking him. Just seems to be the case with so many people.

Listen to XO a few times more scutor, it'll certainly be worth it. Like a Frank Black record (see www.cookingvinyl.com) you need to listen to Elliot Smith records a few times to understand their beauty, but its rewarding. That album is probably the best one, also check out Either/Or.

DAmn.. I heard earlier. I actually cried, pathetic I know. I am still in shock, how can someone stab themselves? I can fathom an OD or possibly a gun shot, but stabbing yourself? He will be missed. |

death is sad, but it was suicide....... i don't feel bad for people that opt for suicide.....so i don't think this is such a sad event...it's your choice and if you don't want to live then i guess you don't have to. but suicide is pretty weak in my opinion. plus, i don't know his music well or care to. |

Suicide and the self-destructive process towards suicide is very sad to me. He had the right to do it (or at least should have the right), yet the degree of experienced sadness is greater the more you attempt to know him through his music.
It seems like exceptional song writers within a distinctive category come every 25 years, and don’t hesitate when saying Elliott Smith was at the same level as John Lennon (al though Elliott Smith was a far better guitar player). Comparing Frank Black, well.. that’s a different category.
Anyways, it’ll be a while for another brilliant song/writer to come along, I figure. Unless I get signed, of course.. j/k

This is truly a Tragedy... in the Aristotle sense... a tragedy by definition.
Great way to top off my horrible day
In my humble opinion, I think your signature with the line from Caribou ought to be removed in his honor "knife me lets," because that line, allbeit the first Pixies song ever, according to album tracklists, will always have a new meaning for me. I mean it's up to you of course, maybe I'm wrong. Another opinion is you should keep it because maybe that it will remind us of his existence, kinda like a libation. Just something I was pondering, sorry.
RIP buddy
