This thread is about reviews for Doggerel As you may have guessed We can also review the reviews here
For starters, The Scotsman - 4 stars
Pixies’ dystopian visions are catching up on them – perhaps for the first time since they formed in the mid-Eighties, real life is stranger than their lyrics but there is still probably no other band on earth who would write a song called You’re Such a Sadducee, even if just to rhyme with “sad to see”, or pair “economy” with “Deutoronomy”.
While frontman Black Francis is on his best Ray Davies behaviour on acoustic guitar-led pop tracks Haunted House and The Lord Has Come Back Today, guitarist Joey Santiago gets his first Pixies songwriting credit on Dregs of the Wine and twists classic traditions with the gothic surf guitar of Vault of Heaven and mean lunatic rocker There’s a Moon On. The title track is more of a conventional rock epic, snapping at the five-minute mark – a wanton indulgence by trim Pixies standards.
Love the Ray Davies-mention.

7/10 in Uncut: https://archive.org/details/uncut-uk-october-2022/page/n29/mode/2up
"Pixies Mk II now have as many albums as Pixies MkI — if you’ve given upin recent years, perhaps nowis the time to reopen the door tosome small joys. Ifwe can now safely conclude that the Pixies are unlikely to hit the heights of early days, then let’s faceit, it’s the rare mortal who can; butit’s also the only slightly less rare mortal who can makealbumsas solidly good as this one. As longas the Pixies keep making good Pixies songs, maybe we should learn tostop worrying and love the Doggerel."

Another good one: https://nowthenmagazine.com/record-reviews/pixies-doggerel-black-francis
"Familiarity floods through Pixies’ latest album – with classic chord progressions, comforting beats and sprechgesang it feels like time has stood still, and not in a bad way."
Love the word "sprechgesang". I call that "parlando", but I do understand the German word, since it's almost the same in Dutch: spreekgezang.

Thanks for compiling these Bill! Lots of positive write ups.
Of course the most important reviews of all are the ones we write here on the forum |

Another good one, 4/5:
https://crypticrock.com/pixies-doggerel-album-review/
The time to dig again at Pixies’ fire has come. Loosely styled and irregular in rhythm for comic relief it is certainly not–Doggerel. That is why Cryptic Rock gives it 4 out of 5 stars.

Daily Mail, 3 stars:
Pixies stormed through the highlights of their 35-year career at July's Iveagh Garden headliner and again when they played before local heroes Fontaines DC at Electric Picnic in Stradbally recently.
But two songs from Doggerel (not to be confused of course with Fontaines DC's debut Dogrel) namely There's A Moon On and Vault Of Heaven got airings at those high-octane and wellreceived shows.
The comparatively melodic nature of those and others such as Dregs Of The Wine and Pagan Man, a song with a whistling solo, continue in the direction of their most recent post-comeback albums Head Carrier and Beneath The Eyrie.
Others such as Nomatterday and Haunted House share musical DNA with songs on the pre-split Bossanova album.
If the ferocity of Charles 'Black Francis' Thompson's vocals and the loud-quiet-loud dynamics of their proto-grunge is what you loved most about Pixies then you best stick with your Surfer Rosa and Doolittle albums.

This one is another good one: https://www.chorusversechorus.com/pixies---doggerel.html
This is simply further proof that Pixies are far from done evolving their sound and growing as a band. Characterized by a more mature sound, to be sure, Doggerel is well worth sticking with until the very last note, and indeed demands repeated listens. Surfer Rosa 2.0, it is not!

Some thought has been put into this one: https://thesoundboardreviews.com/2022/09/26/album-review-pixies-doggerel/
The thing is though, Pixies’ newer work has been meeting expectations, at least in terms of what it feels like they should be doing. They’re still a weird band who write weird songs and treat alt-rock like the Wild West that it once was, only now feeling a bit older and keeping more in pace with that mindset. The key thing to note is that the pejorative mood of a statement like that implies the dull, drained, late-period fare emblematic of older bands falling into creative funks, something which has never debilitated Pixies to even near the same extent.

Kind of meh, Narc Magazine 3/5:
Doggerel remains true to the things that make Pixies who they are, but lacks two things: an obvious nadir and a true climax.

Really liking this one: https://www.xsnoize.com/album-review-pixies-doggerel/?amp
Doggerel maintains Pixies' resurgence in the second phase of their musical odyssey. They do not force the issue or try to hammer home any of their historical musical stereotypes; however, there are enough Pixies sonic signposts that will delight the most ardent fan and enough ingenuity to lure in some new listeners too.

I found two very bad Dutch reviews. The English press seems to love it, but this stings a little (for me)
