Still only listened to Nomatterday but getting big Marsist/Seus/VirginiaReel vibes off it. Feels as if somebody gave Dalgety those records and said you know he did these ones as well? The diction is the best of Pixies 2.0 easy. |

Yeah it's an odd listen. Nothing wrong with the song itself, but it feels like the wrong key for his voice (which is nonetheless in tremendous shape).
Undoubtedly the greatest use of capoed guitar for BF on this record. Lots of lovely open chords. |

Also the first part has a good old fashioned slice of Pixies menace to it. And Frank's rhythm guitar in the second verse is literal chills.
Ok I need to move onto another track. |

I believe Dave played on silverware during the verses. Great sound.
Don't piss in the fountain is such a great line
(and yet, just as in VoH, when they switch from chorus back to the verse something seems off in the mix)

If they release another next year I will forgive everything
Songs are solid. FBF keeps on delivering those hooks. Lyrics could be better, but what do I know. I don't even speak English.

NOMATTERDAY 9/10 Yes, I hear the Seus/Marsist vibe, but also some Headcarrier (the song) First 2 minutes are a highlight of 2.0 Second half would be interesting once, but not that long. It reminds me a bit of Caught in a Dream or Women of War Probably the only good lyrics on the album
VAULT OF HEAVEN 2/10 Cannot listen to this
DREGS OF THE WINE 7/10 great song structure, nice intro and outro, but the insistent chorus (time to go, said it's time to go, are we gonna make it, really make it...) is poor unfortunately
HAUNTED HOUSE 8/10 starts like Caribou ? guitars sound great, very sugary-poppy chorus (à la Twin Peaks?) but not bad The songs lasts one minute too long
GET SIMULATED 9/10 Is She Weird? Verses sound a bit like Eels I really like this song after a few listens, doesn't try too hard like others on the album, no big solo or boring bridge or unending outro
THE LORD HAS COME BACK TODAY 7/10 Something reminds me of Mal de Mer Here again, I much prefer the verses to the choruses
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING 6/10 this a Black Country New Road intro! Nice unexpected chord changes, from both Charles and Joey Probably could be shorter, once everything is said it feels a bit repetitive
THERE'S A MOON ON 5/10 Better on the album than as a single, but still subpar
PAGAN MAN 6/10 reminds me of a SvnFngrs song (Half Man? Garbage Heap?) not uninteresting, but a bit too bland. Could be better after a couple more listens stays short as it should
WHO'S MORE SORRY NOW 6/10 the only song on the album that has better choruses than verses nice outro for a change
YOU'RE SUCH A SADDUCEE 7/10 I like the first 3 minutes, then it drags and becomes cheesy
DOGGEREL 7/10 cool refreshing intro, and vocals are great could be trimmed one minute
I like on this album that several songs have a similar groove to Bagboy I hear more similarities with BTE demos, rather than with BTE, which is a good thing for me Lyrically a bit disappointing, especially the filler vocals (whoa, ay-ay, come on, you...) Many songs could be shorter, but there's a bunch of memorable tracks like Nomatterday, Get Simulated, and probably Doggerel too
-- "Aristophanes! (gong sounds)" "Fucking up my devotion!"

Only listened 1 time so far The « don’t piss in the foutain » one is my favorite. I like how it goes in all directions and breaks from the usual verse-chorus-verse structure. Can’t say the same for the rest if the record, nothing crazy (I wasn’t expecting it either, so no disappointment here).
BTE demos remains my favorite 2.0 stuff

Which incarnation was this?
The riff is certainly addictive, but for me, it's one of the weaker songs on the album. |

You can have nine fingers if you like there's no hard and fast rule that says you must filter the album down to seven favoured tracks like I did - unless you don't particularly like Haunted of Sadducee? |

Like most of the songs I didn't pick they are fine I even think Moon is ok
The only one that bugs me is Pagan Man (nice song, but the vocal and arrangement....)

I just feel that this record, they aren't trying to be the pixies....there's a sense of freedom on this record that doesn't appear on the others. Now, that doesn't make an album good....and sure, I would like more weirdness like Nomatterday, but I don't know, at least the record to me, sounds looser...I mean, I just compare to it Greens and Blues....you listen to greens and blues, and it just feels forced, at least to me....I don't know...Again, more "weirdness" would be welcome....all in all, it feels looser, which is welcome |

First listen, hasty first thoughts:
- Nomatterday is excellent, particularly the first half. The three songs with sprachgesang are probably my favourite (Nomatterday, Dregs of the Wine, Doggerel), and not coincidentally the weirdest and loosest on the record. - I loved Beneath the Eyrie on the first listen, and while I enjoyed the flow of the first three songs, I'm less sure about this one, but will give it time before dismissing it. - How this album ultiamtely ages/settles with me will depend on whether I warm up to the middle-paced Frank Black songs (The Lord Has Come Back Today, Thunder and Lightning, You're Such A Saduceee, Who's More Sorry Now, and Pagan Man). - A problem I have with that group of songs is that either Tom or Joey draw too often from the well of loud/distorted single strum powerchords as the songs progress to give them a feeling of climax that the songs (which are more ditty like) don't call for. It worked for Daniel Boone, but it becomes increasingly tiring throughout the album. - Am I the only one who hears "Stars" in the chorus to Doggerel?
In sum: On first listen, it doesn't sound like they've hit the sweet spot between Pixies-past and present that they did on Beneath the Eyrie. There is a real pull between some very interesting songs that push the band in a more experimental direction (which I would love to see explored further) and pleasant mid-tempo Frank Black songs that seem a bit crushed under the weight of over-production/the Tom Pixies sound.

Just finished my first listen. A mixed bag - some excellent tracks and some missteps. What this record tells me though - more so than BTE - is that there's a big beautiful Black Francis just waiting to get out there and do his thing, free from the shackles of this Pixies business. I hope we get a solo album soon.
Kind of a weird flow to the album. Moon is still brutal. The music itself is OK, it still reminds me of Roky Ericksson, but the lyrics and the come ons are just cringe.
On first listen Nomatterday, Doggerel, Saducee, Pagan Man and Haunted House are highlights. I might be warming to Vault of Heaven a bit more too, despite the lyrics (yeah, some dodgy lyrics on this album - every Joey collaboration, some of Black's like Moon, that mannequin line, line tamers, etc.). Pleasantly surprised by Haunted House - I went in fearing the worst because of the title but it's wonderfully Black, reminded me of Mal de Mer or O Little Cloud, a similar kind of atmosphere. Sadduccee and Doggerel were great. I'm reminded of The New Pornographers, Atlantis and indeed Stars as Brank mentioned above.
Anyway, some fantastic moments in this. Too much Paz. Too Pixies-ified in places. Too much nonsense from Dalgety. But a nice reminder that BF can still be amazing.

It’s funny how Nomatterday starts like some random 2.0 stuff and morphs into a Frank Black song in the middle.

CD arrived today. The disc is unnecessarily difficult to take out of the Deluxe edition. It's in a thin paper pocket that opens from the side. The disc can REALLY bury itself in there. You almost need a special extraction tool to pull it out without ripping the pocket. |

Too much Paz? too little Paz! Too little of everything to be honest. I would be a up for a lean and mean Pixies album, but this one breathes too much. I would love more Paz (a lead vocal would be great, she can play violin and banjo, would love to hear it in the more
And thanks for that Stars-link. Yes, it's alike. Almost a reworking of the same idea. Two beautiful songs though. The Golem is a better record I guess. Not sure.

The harmonies between Charles and Paz on practically all songs are so beautiful. I think that's where some of the typical Pixies quirkiness lies this time around. I don't recall hearing harmonies to this extent on any other Pixies album. My favorites so far are Pagan Man, Who's More Sorry Now, Thunder and Lightning, and Haunted House. -oddball |

Don’t have much time to post, but I’ve been through it twice. The first time it kind of washed over (as first FB/Pixies listens tend to for me). After a second time - I really like it. My first impression is that it’s very comfortable. The least calculated of all the new releases. It just feels lived in - a solid batch of FBF songs performed by the Pixies. A lot of good, Bossanova style mid tempo chugs in here. It’s not gonna set the world on fire but it’s a welcome addition. And there are a few outstanding moments. Looking forward to a few more spins and a more considered opinion. Drums still a little smashed sounding but good - as good a production as BTE. Anyway - glad it’s finally here!
I had a bad reaction to your public hobby writings. |

Yeah. the “mid tempo Frank Black” songs are the ones I really think hurt all of the Pixies 2.0 albums. Just kinda brutal to hear them under the Pixies banner. But more than ever, Pixies and FB are intertwined and it’s basically a place for BF to get any and all of his musical ideas off. I just wish he’d do a little more quality control with the lyrics, and add a little more in terms of imagery in these songs to make them rise above mediocre mid tempo stuff. |

My favorite has been Get Simulated, but now I suddenly hear The Creature Crawling in it. And Ten Percenter, but that's more the feel of his voice
I do think Get Simulated is the more exciting rocker (but Creature Crawling covers way more ground, and a great recording too)

Charles is no doubt channeling Leonard Cohen in the Doggerel title track. Then we get to the bridge and it sounds like a Frank Black song that could have been on Fast Man Raiderman. Lots of unexpected but pleasant turns on this album.

Will never understand this view of HC...It couldn't be further from 1.0 Pixies to me. It basically sounds like a pleasant, OK Catholics album.
Anyway...
Currently annoyed I spent the day having to drive a ton and searching for music on Spotify to listen to and not knowing this was out. I'll have to check it out very soon. I have extremely low expectations. I think Moon is possibly the worst song Pixies or Frank has ever done (like "oh guess I won't get excited about future albums" shark jumping for me), and I find Vault of Heaven very boring. |

Early thoughts after about three listens: I've long enjoyed how Frank plays with classic rock influences and "Doggerel" is all about that. It's moody. I dig the flow of rockers and pretty stuff. Joey Santiago plays lots of cool parts that evoke desert highways.
I appreciate that it doesn't have a screamer on it. There's no "Blue Eyes Hexe" or "Baal's Back" here. Nothing on it reminds me of old Pixies at all. They've moved on from that, which works for me because I moved on from that a long time ago. New Pixies is just new Frank Black songs to me and I like where he's at here.
Favorite song is hard to pick, but it might be "Who's More Sorry Now?". It sounds like a really good George Harrison solo song--and he's my favorite solo Beatle so that's a compliment. |

Same thing happens to me regularly - now we have access to any album in the world at our fingertips I find myself unable to think of something to put on (meanwhile there's a new album out there that the streaming sites have failed to highlight because they're busy promoting Ed Sheeran or Beyonce) |
