Some of you may recall that shortly after 'Head Carrier' was released, I put together a game of Pixies "survivor". Now that we've had a chance to digest BtE and its bonus material, I thought it might be worth revisiting, if folks are up for playing.
Just vote for your least favorite Pixies 2.0 song and every few days I will remove the song with the most votes. In the end, we'll hopefully have a trim, punchy 2.0 collection of 12 songs (continuing in the 2.0 format).
Here's the list (46 songs!!):
All I Think About Now All the Saints
Andro Queen
Another Toe in the Ocean
Baal's Back Bagboy
Bel Esprit Bird of Prey
Blue Eyed Hexe Catfish Kate Caught in a Dream
Chapel Hill Classic Masher Daniel Boone Death Horizon Greens and Blues Head Carrier Hey, Debussy
How I Learned to Earn Rewards
I Just Can't Break It to You
In the Arms of Mrs. Mark of Cain Indie Cindy
Jaime Bravo
Long Rider
Los Surfers Muertos Magdalena 318 Mal De Mer
Might as Well Be Gone
On Graveyard Hill
Oona Plaster of Paris
Please Don't Go
Ready for Love
Ring the Bell Silver Bullet
Silver Snail
Snakes St. Nazaire
Talent
Tenement Song The Good Works of Cyrus This Is My Fate
Um Chagga Lagga
Under the Marigold What Goes Boom
Women of War
I also put together a 2.0 Survivor playlist for those that have Spotify (includes everything except 'Women of War'):
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5OG0auENf8QeaaRvgRbBhW?si=XPaK1ES_TE6FAeiWaUW6WQ
Let the slaughter begin.

I think Talent is one of the only great songs on that album. Weird.
I would vote for Jaime Bravo. |

All I think about now. Rip off of where is my mind and I really don't like Paz's vocals on it. |

Really glad to see some gaming back on the forum!
I was gonna go with Grandma’s Back as I call it (Baal’s Back).

I think it would be fun if we listen to the songs people are voting for.
I’m gonna make a little playlist right now.
Is vote changing allowed? |

I'm the weirdest Pixies fan. I don't dislike Another Toe. And I love Jaime Bravo. One of the few forgotten Pixies gems.

I believe that if you didn't know what "All I Think About Now" was about at all, or how it came about folks would love the song. Take it for what it's worth, it's a great Pixies song, or for that matter it's a great song period. |

It's good to be challenged on this, and I certainly think it's better than Baal's Back, but something has to go first. Name a song you think ought to leave the island ahead of AITAN. |

OK - it looks like Another Toe and AITAN are equally disliked, so I have no problem killing both in this early round.
Another Toe 3 Talent 1 Jaime Bravo 1 Ring the Bell 1 AITAN 3 Baal's Back 1 WoW 1
Please note that I edited the original post to show which have been voted off. Let round two begin. I'm glad my song is dead -- someone else start this time. |

I'd put Lone Rider next as I still haven't warmed to it but that would be a wasted vote.
Jaime Bravo. Had the potential to be a good song but it's too long and its position in the album makes it a little cringey. Been a long time since I've listened to it actually but I recall not liking the backing vocals either. |

Baal’s Back needs to get thrown back. |

You folks are crazy, AITAN is a top 10 Pixies 2.0 song.
I'll have to get back to you on this - I've only listened to the last 3 songs from the Beyond the Eyrie demos once, and I figure it's going to be one of them.

Seconded. That intro is awful, reminds me of the Logical Song. If I make it past the intro it doesn't really go anywhere bar a couple of nice ahhh's from Paz and Joey riff but that ultimately doesn't save it. |

In agreement on Jaime Bravo for the same reasons. Had potential with an interesting subject but goes nowhere and is really one-note. Kill it. |

Please Don't Go. Reminds me of a very uninspired moment from Honeycomb or FM/RM. Fortunately it was kept off the album.
Pretty surprised that AITAN is gone this soon. Sometimes I'm very sure it's the best song from Head Carrier. |

Not a bad song by any means, but probably not the style/genre of something I would listen to outside of my FB fandom. |

I think I have to bow out here if people keep crapping on the BTE demos. Those 9 songs are my favorite album Frank has released in years and years. I think it's absolutely brilliant. It's just too unbelievable to me people don't like those songs.
Anyway I would still pick Jaime Bravo or Ring The Bell. These songs just hurt my ears and I'm not sure why. I find them very tiring to get through. Otherwise I'd pick plenty from Head Carrier which just feels a bit bland to me, except for Talent, one of the only songs on that album that sounds like the band is having a little fun. |

^Yeah, I like both Jaime Bravo and Ring the Bell, but they actually do hurt my ears. It's probably a mix of the multilayered production/extreme compression, and the fact that by the time you get to them in Indie Cindy your ears are ready to bleed from the previous 40 minutes. |

Yes I actually can't tell if I dislike the songs or if it's the ear fatigue. But if I try to think of them as songs they just don't really do much for me and feel too repetitive. But yeah the production is awful on them, and I actually really like how the rest of the album sounds, for the most part. I think What Goes Boom for example is a monster of a song in the best way. |

It's always a little depressing to hear these sort of comments (no judgment) and think about how the 2.0 era could have been so much better with different production etc. Oh well, I know we've beaten that horse to death.
On a more positive note it's always interesting to see what songs people want to vote off in the early rounds, and how others stick up for them.
By no means do I think Toe or AITAN are the worst songs on their respective albums, yet here they are, casualties of the forum survivor firing squad. Oh well. We've got live recordings of those two we can listen to which is nice to give perspective. We don't have any live versions of Jaime Bravo or Ring the Bell, right? So all we can judge them on is the brickwalled overcompressed soup they've been boiled in. I feel like with some FB songs that aren't my favorite I can at least be like, "I get what he was going for here. But I never can really get it with those two tunes. Do they hurt my ears? I think Jaime Bravo does. It would be nice to hear that one live. Ring the Bell sounds like a B side that somehow made it on to an album that has no b-sides. |

My discretion, but usually like 3-4 days. You're welcome to play as much or as little as you wish, but we don't bring songs back from the dead.

Ok - my vote goes to Jaime Bravo (for many of the reasons already stated).
Head Carrier 1 Indie Cindy 1 Might As Well Be Gone 2 Jaime Bravo 4 Baal's Back 1 Ring the Bell 2 I Just Can't Break it To You 1
I've also been deleting from the Spotify playlist, for quick reference (link up top). Round 3 let's go! |
