Still?

It's actually very, very unusual for the Breeders to play Gigantic.

Why wouldn't they? They're already playing loads of covers and Amps songs.. Only song Kim plays bass for, weirdly she plays Jo's bass rather than her own so the tone is quite hard and dry compared to Kims warmer/fatter sound.. Jo had the goldtop and managed an epic Santiagoesque fluff in the breakdown bit :)

That's a Charles song, isn't it? Seen him sing it solo :/
I always thought she suggested Winterlong as a cover, surprised they still play that.

Well technically Gigantic is also a Charles song with Deal's lyrics.

Charles' chord progression and title, Kim's lyrics, vocal and bass melodies I s'pose.
I wonder who's going to claim dibs on Silver or if it had it's day on the Doolittle tour and that's it.

She could also sing Bagboy chorus since she's obviously singing chorus on the studio version uncredited (even if they said it wasn't her) ;-)

For the trivia... the LP Goldtop is the one Santiago had for a while in the early Pixies years, when he had his glorious signature sound. I saw some Breeders video a while ago on Youtube, sisters Deal were performing a song in the studio with the Goldtop, the guitar is the exact same as early Joey's LP (pickups, dents, and so on.). I read somewhere he had to return the guitar to Deal because she was afraid he could damage it.

And for the bass sound, Kim also said in the Pixies years the she hated her Pixies bass amp (isn't this an Ampeg stack ?) and asked if she could use her own amp instead, but Charles insisted she kept using the Pixies one. And now it has been passed to Paz judging by the latest Pixies videos. Looks like Kim prefers a dryier bass sound.

Hadn't heard that about Charles and the amps before - is that true for 2004+ tours too?

She was def playing Jo's rig, not her own - they're not even unplugging when they swap instruments so are quite often standing in front of a stack that someone else is playing through.

Ah you're right its not the Ampeg one she hated.

from the very old page AlecEiffel.free.fr

Kim: "I hate my cabinets - a Gallien-Krueger 4x10 and another one that says 'Joe's Light' on it, which has an 18. In the studio I beg them to let me use my amp. They say, 'Okay Kim, here's your channel right here.' Then it's always, 'Let's try just the D.I. alone for a minute, Kim. Hey, sounds great!'" K.D."

That said Paz got the Ampeg when Kim left.

they played a nearly identical setlist in antwerp yesterday.
divine hammer was part of the encore, though, instead of saints. i believe they switched hag, divine hammer and saints around, but i might be wrong.

It is not uncommon at all in a studio situation to run the bass guitar direct into the board, and not mic the amp cabinet itself.

When you are in the studio and your bass is running direct, the only way to hear it is through headphones (or sometimes through small studio monitors) which sound nothing like an actual bass amp, nor do they allow you to "feel" the low frequencies, which she is clearly used to on stage and in a rehearsal room.

That seems to be what she is referring to.

Some folks like this sound and approach, while others do not.

As a result, some folks actually do both at the same time and use two different channels, one for each signal. Then they have the option of blending the two sounds to create a hybrid bass tone for the record.

If there's interest I could make this Breeders recording available to those non-dimers out there.
I like how this has generated quite some discussion.

indeed: http://thebreedersmusic.com/#waitinthecar

Orange - available only at upcoming Breeders shows
b/w Amon Düül II 'Archangel's Thunderbird'

Red - available only at ?
b/w Mike Nesmith 'Joanne'

Yellow - available only at independent record stores
b/w Devo 'Gates of Steel'

this article says the red one is actually the indie record store version, and that it will be released on 27 october: https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/news/latest-news/the-breeders-are-back-with-new-single-wait-in-the-car-and-details-of-a-new

maybe the third version (red or yellow?) will be a record store day release? or is that too far away from now?
