Now that the music press are starting to publish head carrier reviews, I thought that we could keep a record of them here.
I've seen 2 so far ( which I will try and attach later)
Mojo magazine featured HC as its main review 4/5 with lots of praise.
Uncut magazine gave it 6/10 in a pithy little review harking on about how it's not the same without Kim Deal.
Will be getting Q later so will report back. |

| My respect for Uncut magazine dropped a bit during the Catholics days. The cool kids of Uncut were championing Wilco, Lambchop, Ryan Adams, American Music Club into the Americana alt country scene. DITS and BLD were 2 of the best examples of this genre but they were not accepted. Frank Black alt country? You joking? They said. But now it's back to Pixies I guess it's not Pixies without Kim Deal - what do you gotta do to get into the club? |

The "music writer" from the Cleveland paper has no business "reviewing" this record.
He can't even be bothered to get basic, well-reported facts of the band's chronology right, and clearly is barely aware of their output.
He offers no real insight of any kind, and seems quite happy to do so.
Why do goofballs like this get an opportunity to hear the album in advance? It is almost a forgone conclusion that it won't strike their fancy, and that will result in a lackluster "score" with little bearing on the reality of the release itself.

Head Carrier is now appearing on Metacritic- a score of 66 after the first four reviews (not bad considering the score of 35 from Under the Radar):

I agree with much of what the Pancake guy says.
"Plaster of Paris" seems really out of place on this record. The sound of the guitars is drastically different from the general feel of the rest of the album, FBF's vocals seem like they come from a totally different sort of fellow, and they are treated differently as well.
It's hard to explain just why, but the entire mood, vocal delivery and the style of guitar playing reminds me a great deal of early (1976-1979) Talking Heads.
There's a lot of mid-'80s K Records in there as well.
It's not a bad song, it's just so incongruous with the rest of the record that it makes me wonder why it was not relegated to a more similar sounding group of songs from the sessions (i.e., a follow-up EP) - unless of course, it is a complete outlier and does not sound or feel particularly like anything else they tracked this time out.
As short as the record already is, I actually think I might like the running order of HC better if "Plaster of Paris" was simply not included.
Again, not a bad song, just a peculiar curveball to throw into the mix. There are other curveballs in there, too, but they are less extreme and fit better with the totality of the record.

Woah... the play button in the top left literally plays the whole album - I've just listened to it all! First impressions:
- The opening three (which we’ve all heard) are ridiculously good.
- ‘Talent’ and the ‘Tenement Song’ sound better in the context of the album.
- I have a feeling ‘Oona' may take a couple of listens.
- ‘All I Think About Now’ is really very good! An album highlight for sure.
- 'Plaster of Paris' is a very enjoyable listen.
- The compression is ALL CONSUMING and makes the album far more difficult to listen to than it should ever be. It’ll turn people off on here I’m sure. WHY?! |

This is a weird little record. It's a bit like SVN FNGRS, and a bit Bossanova I guess.
New Wave, classic rock, indie, surf.
Way better than IC and I think I like it better than some of his solo records too.

Weird that they have the whole thing up there. I for one am going to resist the urge and wait till i receive the vinyl.

Agree on all of this Bill. I'm only halfway through but it's clearly superior to IC, simply because it's catchier and more "free". Sounds like a band enjoying what they are doing. |

The way I read that, it was actually more of a criticism of the production style / mix of that track, which leaves FBF's vocals and most of Dave's kit (save for the kick and snare) drowned in a mush of cacophonous guitar noise - which has already garnered some discussion here on the boards.
I could be wrong, but that's the way I took it, because the song itself is indisputably AWESOME.
