PS Has anybody else noticed that in some of the web stories today Paz has been 'recently confirmed as a full member of the Pixies'? |

Hey everybody.
I'm really excited about this record. I heard "UCL" when they debuted in in NYC last year, and I thought it sounds remarkably fresh for them. Can't wait to dig it to more.
Hope all is well with everyone,

"Black coal night in Wallonia Sticks" http://wikitravel.org/en/Wallonia
So much "No Kim, No Deal" sentiment still shown with regards to the feedback to the song/album. She left, they didn't kick her out. And people always dismiss Dave and Joey to assume FB is some crazy megalomaniac. It's frustrating to see. |

It's nice to see the Pixies back with a rawer sound. I think the recording sounds better than the Rolling Stone clip of Um Chugga from a while back. I Classic Masher has potential to be a more popular single. Makes me think they're saving some of the best for when the album comes out. I wonder if CM will come out as a single around the albums release. Also don't know if I could resist hearing the new songs live but I'll try not to over do it. So far this seems like a nice return to form after Indie Cindy. I did enjoy some of the songs on it, but I think the production on Um Chugga sounds a lot better. |

Wallonia is the french-speaking part of Belgium. There's a lot of old abandonedcoal coal mines in northern France and Belgium.

It's actually a sample from Beef's song in Phantom Of The Paradise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psj1l6JHmPA

I never thought I'd say that one day but strange - and I don't mean it a good or bad way - first thought I had hearing the excerpt was "Holy Wood era Marilyn Manson with Frank Black on vocals" :D
I guess the whole song has a different vibe than what this clip suggested to me. |

This reminds me of the time Charles posted that Vine of him lip syncing to Blue Eyed Hexe while driving (Not very safe!! haha). It gave us a tiny snippet of an unreleased uppercut of a song. I tried to fill in around it with my imagination but when I heard the actual song I was way off. I love Hexe though, is definitely my favorite of that batch of tracks.

I know what you mean! Funny to notice that for Hexe, the opposite happened: I could never have guessed what some called the "AC/DC" vibe from the clip (that amazed me a lot at the time, and I too love it, just heard it for the first time in ages yesterday a couple of minutes before reading your post). Anyway, really can't wait, always good to listen to BF new chapter in songwriting. |

I'm getting a strong cross-country/globetrotting serial killer (or rapist) and/or delusional-psychotic-interior-monologue vibe off this song's lyrics.
Plus, the subtle, reverse Jimi Hendrix hat-tip is a hoot, and a classic FBF move.

I don't know about Baal's Back, but Head Carrier (title track) seems to be about St Denis. Beheaded with his companions but walked six miles afterwards. |

I've listened to UCL several times now - man I'm digging it. Lots of great guitar stuff going on that sounded more like white noise to me the first few times. Really cool build in the layering that Joey is working in with Charles throughout the song. Great. Can't wait to hear it in the context of the album!
Also - the more I listen to it the more it sounds like something the Catholic's might have done circa the Pistolero era, just more amped up. Love it.

^ I'm with you Johnny. UCL just came out but I've already played it like crazy. Really nice track. The guitar on the second verse "I lost my way in the Tremontaine" chugs along and really gets things going. How does everyone else feel about it after a few days?
I'm already jonesing for more now, especially Head Carrier after those YouTube clips. I keep finding myself randomly saying "Head Carrier" around the house. Might be losing it. |

Two listens a day for 6 days and three things I *really* like
1. The shortened second verse 'C'mon maaan' 2. Paz coming on with 'Um chaggaa lagga on the second bar of the 3rd verse' 3. The way the guitar comes crashing in on the third chorus. A production trick I realise but very effective |

Nice! I enjoy the same specific things too. "Black coal night in Wallonia sticks" is something I find myself singing all the time. Also dig the elongated "roooooooad"s.

Joey part is actually very interesting. Hard to hear because of the crazy-ass compression/limiting, but sounds like he's a great as usual.
I'm more sceptical about his solo. I much prefer the solo from the acoustic version.

Not sure if the Paz vocal bit you're mentioning is her first "um chagga lagga" after the solo, but if it is, listen closely.
It's the one time on the track in which she definitely substitutes the more traditional "Boom Chaka Laka" for the less strident "um chagga lagga," which helps that particular line stand out.

Pretty sure he means when Paz alone sings Um Chagga Lagga, it's very isolated just before BF follows with "all night long I heard you moan". |

Well, darn you just made me go and listen again
The moment in bold. Not sure if it's an Um or a Boom
So I walked the marsh at Bouche De Rhone [Paz] Um chagga lagga on the side of the road And all night long I heard you moan.....
And another thing. I don't get this 'great tune, shame about the nonsense lyrics' type review. I mean have they ever listed to the Pixies. I'm digging for fire? Your bone's got a little machine? Jefery with one f...... |
