I prefer my Pixies weird than badass :)

If we go by the "title = line from the lyrics" formula, I would have preferred Trapezista (from Jaime Bravo) to Indie Cindy
And Cepalophore to Head Carrier, though the meaning is the same, it sounds more poetic and abstract to me

According to a dude on the Steve Hoffman forum it was BF's agent Jeff Craft who said no one would be able to pronounce cephalophore and agreed to change it.

Decent forum over there. Nice folks.

Bel Esprit & Plaster Of Paris have been cited by critics as tracks that make little impression. I would've agreed on first or even second listen, but my god do they grow on you! There's some alchemy going on there. One critic (unsurprisingly Australian) mentioned a Go Betweens vibe to Plaster & I can definitely hear that though doubt it was intentional. And that low bass note that someone here noted (sorry forget who) really does transform BE into something special. That such a small thing can do this is magical to me.

I love All I Think About Now, my only gripe that the melody seems a tad underdeveloped to me, and Paz's performance is maybe a little tense?

Anyway, genuinely great album - for me better than Bossanova and at least on a par with Trompe.

Sorry to go off topic, wasn't Cecilia Ann based on one of Erik Satie's Gnossienne numbers? BF mentioned was working on a piece of his music recently, wonder if it ended up on Head Carrier.

Anyway wish they would include Cecilia Ann in their shoes again, it's a great opener.

Yep

Pixies covered the Surftones, and the Surftones (Steve Hoffmann) based Cecilia Ann on Eric Satie work

Loving this new record!

One thing I want to mention - I know everyone loves "all I think about now", but am I the only one that really doesn't like the vocal melody? I love Paz's voice, but the descending melody in the "all I think about now" line really doesn't fit well with the song, IMO. Something about it just bugs me.

Did they really wrote "Bouche de Rhone" on the artwork ? --> Bouches-du-Rhône. I also read "Caphalaphore" instead of "Cephalophore".

Great. Joey guitar is fantastic on this one. Could be on Bossanova/Trompe along with Oona. Those are the 2 gems of this record IMO.

after a few spins:
-everything is fine, tame
-franks vocals are restrained for the most part, and not in a good way
-on something against your or rock music he sounds unhinged, demonic. on baal's back he sounds like a constipated brian jonhnson
-some nice chord progressions and leads, though for the most part the arrangements are predictable
-dave has more inventiveness, musicality, and spirit in 1:18 of allison than this entire record
-i like paz's vocals
-ballsy to rip off your own most famous song

I'm back after a few days here and I must say I've been blown away by Head Carrier. As a bassist myself I must say I totally adore Paz bass work on Plaster of Paris,Charles storytelling is top notch and can somebody tell me which effect is being used on Charles guitar? It sounds maybe very post punk?Joey's solo in Tenement song is classic.Might As Well Be Gone is beautiful.Talent sounds even better with headphones and Um Chagga Lagga blows away any bad reviews that read that the album looses intensity in the last half.Bel Sprit is pure joy to listen too and so has been the whole record for me.Can't wait for the live versions.OOOOOONNNNAAAA :)

Haha !! I'm afraid you're right however.

Not enough reverb (?) on his vocals. You're not supposed to hear the vocal trick when a rock singer screams (or pretends he's doing it). They really screwed this one up in the studio.

This is a great album, consistently catchy and with a fun feel to the whole thing. I can totally understand someone putting it in their top 5 favorite Pixies albums.

Head Carrier – This is a great opener and has all the good sounds I was hoping for. “Hey Rusty” gets me pumped every time. Love the way they buried Paz. The line “I’m going down the drain again” always makes me think of Barton Fink, perhaps another head carrier.

Classic Masher – Fun song, although I never understood people’s obsession with it.

Baal’s Back – the only song I’ve skipped so far. It just doesn’t’ work for me. It feels like this is the only song on the album where BF is trying, meaning that every other tune feels effortless. I feel like it would fit better on godweensatan the oneness more than on a Pixies album. Makes me want to listen to the Sad Punk.

You Might As Well Be Gone – Now the album gets really good. One of those FB style songs that keeps you guessing, never knowing where the song is going (like Selkie Bride). Also breaks up the album a bit, kind of like The Vanishing Spies on TOTY.

Oona – What can you say, the man is a genius. Classic FBF. Nobody else is making songs like this. His voice sounds nice and girly at points. Great stuff.

Talent – More fun stuff. Like a said somewhere else, really reminds me of Cult of Ray era FB, which is awesome.

The Tenement Song – the highlight of the album, and the highlight of Pixies 2.0. This song is so savage I can’t even believe he pulled it off. Paz, Joey, the atmosphere, Dave, everything. Just an awesome song. I even like the lame-ass video.

Bel Esprit – Cool song, sticks in my head all day

All I Think About Now – Beautiful, haunting, touching. I really feel he succeeded entirely here. Makes me think about ex-girlfriends.

Um Chagga Lagga – This is some rip roaring fun right here, and after all these months I’m still totally into it. Nice and weird.

Plaster of Paris – Another fun one to get stuck in your head.

All the Saints – Perfect ending to a nearly perfect album

If we get an album like this every couple years (or every single year!) I think we are very fortunate.

Great job Charles and team, thank you!

P.S.

After two albums the only B-side we have is WOW? More B-sides please!

Great post Bedbug. I am nodding along especially to your points on You Might As Well Be Gone, Oona and Tenement Song. But especially Head Carrier: I had the distinct feeling when I hear the 'Hey Rusty' that first time that this album was pure Pixies and everything was going to be AOK.

I am also keenly waiting/hoping for B-sides. From some of the interviews there are snippets that they recorded a few more songs than 12.
