It's better than standard power pop. It's a bittersweet song, with brighter production. I can feel what you call cheesy, but it' a fine line to me I really love how it sounds undefinably 60's (kinda) or 90's or 2010's

Classic Masher had a great potential, but I don't like how it came out as a full band song. It's a nice one, but I don't feel the urge to push the replay button like Oona. Oona is great, great, great. I really dig the distortion (or overdrive or whatever) BF is using nowadays and his guitar tone.

It'll no doubt grow on me. I'm much more one for music over lyrics & often take no notice unless they really stand out to me. No doubt this will seem very odd to people who dissect the words for meaning. Maybe I'm missing out but it's the sound & the way that makes me feel that's important. So I had no idea it was bittersweet...it just sounds a bit cheesy and obvious to me.
It'll probably be my favourite track next week! |

For me it veers close to that cheese line but he just pulls it back with the melody variation in the verse and the vocal interplay with Paz |

I love Oona. Even more so now I've figured out the chords.
I like how he varies the vocals on the second verse too.
So much to enjoy on this record. |

Time to update the tab section then ! ;-)
I only manage to figure out chords by watching concert videos. I need to watch the Baals & Carrier videos. I love the Head Carrier rythm part lick, too !

I'm also really digging You Might As Well Be Gone, for a couple of reasons. One is what you mentioned here, how the verses sound a little off from the chorus, which I love. I also love it when a song sounds bright and light and beautiful, but deals with a darker subject. In this case, the choruses sound so bright and shiny, but the lyrics are all dealing with the collapse of a relationship. Love that.
At the moment, the chorus of this song and the chorus of Oona are the melodies I can't get out of my head. |

Oh man, I needed to get out of the office for a bit so I took a stroll down to a nearby record shop - lo and behold, there's the Head Carrier LP on the shelf! I don't think they were technically allowed to sell it but whatever, I snatched it up. It's gonna be a long couple hours before I can get home and hear what everyone is talking about!
I'm pitching a Pixies pants tent and the only cure is some Head Carrier!!

I've been listening to/from work in the car on repeat for 3 days now (~40 mins each way) and my final verdict is that... it's really good! Even the lesser songs (Talent/Tenement) work pretty well in context.
Among the unreleased songs (ie. non-official or Youtube-live releases), Might as Well Be Gone, Oona, Bel Esprit all work for me. Reckon 'Saints should have been an instrumental. Liking Um Chagga Lagga a lot in the car.
Unfortunately, Baal's Back is definitely ruined by the [whisper: compression] thing, in that it just breaks up as soon as you even moderately crank it -- fantastic blast of a song, but you can't turn it up even moderately without it turning to distorted mush, unlike any of the 'classic' Pixies albums. That song is crying out for a re-release (EP?) with decent mixing/mastering! Such a shame.
Love Bel Esprit, especially that gut-wrenching third chord in the verses! Finding Plaster over-rated, B-side material for me -- which is not to say it's bad in any way.
Oona is also really doing it for me.
Joey's really back on form here, too, thankfully ditching the effects for the most part. Some really nice twangy, tremolo-ey stuff, along with proper Joey fucked-upped-ness.
I don't really relate it to the 'classic' Pixies stuff, just seems like the 'new' Pixies have MASSIVELY upped their game compared to I**** C*****.
7 out of 10 -- would be 8 if not for the fact that you can't fucking TURN IT UP!

First listen - Mother of Fuck, they're back.
Not going to wax poetic here because first impressions are always weird with FBF material, so all I'll say is
1) This is Pixies music, whatever that means 2) Head Carrier sounds like a lost Niel Young and Crazy Horse title track (that's a good thing) 3) The rumblings about Baals Back are true - the mix fucking sucks and totally destroys the song. Mix it like Rock Music and you got yourself an instant classic. As is, it sounds like they turned a fucking 8 year old loose on the mixing board and called it a day. 4) The rumblings about Oona are true - awesome. Sounds like a missing track from Surfer 5) I disagree with all of you who are saying Talent, Um, and Tenement are lightweight in context. I love them. 6) Plaster is one of my favs. It's awesome.
That is all for now.

Starting to get kind of antsy about receiving the album days after the official release.
I got an email today, "All items from Pixies have been shipped"
Yes, also received the Pledge message. It won't be long now.
But, after the initial shock of maybe not hearing the album until a week from now, I finally caved and have been hearing the album non-stop.

I respect that, and I of course will listen more once I get the cd tomorrow. But it just seems like a song many people could write. BF's songs, at least most of the ones I gravitate too for repeated listening, are the ones that only he could write. Ya know what I mean? Bel Espirit, Might As Well, Snakes, Another Toe, Magdalena, Ring The Bell, are songs that don't scream BF to me, which is maybe why I'm not that into them. I know he has shown his pop side frequently, especially as a solo artist, but give me the weird over the beautiful anytime. If you can combine them like on Plaster or Head Carrier or the verses on What Goes Boom, then I'm hooked.
celebrated my son's bday today, but tomorrow is my day! Haha. |

Totally agree, it's uplifting but has that undertone of raw sadness or despair - I think gut wrenching describes it perfectly.
I recall they played Winterlong on BBC 6Music session (with Kim S), Joey played an extended outro that had that same vibe. |

Fully agree on Tenement and Plaster, just like I did when I first heard Monkey or Navajo. And that worked out. |

Listening in my car now on the way to work. Sounds effing great! Might As We Be Gone sounds better to me than on the iPhone, unsurprisingly. All I Think About Now is really flipping strong. Paz's bass on Plaster. Wonderful. |

I'm really digging the whispers of acoustic guitar that drift in and out during the verses on Oona. Really nice blend with the drums and bass. Paz has really done a great job. |

Still no delivery from PledgeMusic, no digital download provided - this is, by far, the worst pre-order experience I've ever had, and I do this a few times a month. Giving the stream to NPR and song exclusives to iTunes is insulting enough, but to have the delivery be after release date without a digital download on day of release is incredibly bad form. I could've, for less money, bought the record at a store todayInstead, I have absolutely nothing to show for my preorder, which benefits the band/management/label intensely.
I know this is not the doing of the band themselves, but I hope they catch wind of this, and change their plan for next release.

For those of you in the states who prefer picking up actual compact discs with packaging and liner notes and all (the packaging and lyric sheet for this album are pretty unique, worth picking up in my opinion), Best Buy has the album on sale now for $7.99.... Love holding a new Pixies album in my grimey hands! :) |

A good friend had the same problem Brian. He decided the wait was long enough and got the vinyl today. A delayed pre order. Is that an oxymoron? Someone will get a nice Christmas present of the dupe. i agree, whoever is doing the marketing or whatever. Picking singles, choosing formats, release partners etc. it seems laboured. If we are lucky and more records are to come they should just do the radio head thing and drop it out of the blue. It's a great record. It stands on its own feet.

Oh and btw, he is definitely saying "Cum on me" in Um Chagga. That song is totally degenerate - gimme a break of course he's saying 'cum on me.' If you disagree you're out to lunch.
