Including a single early July which could be Classic Masher
Wilson, do we get to hear violin? Which voice is BF mostly using? Soft? Shout? Spoken word? Is David Lovering more inspired than on Indie Cindy?
7 titles made it from that batch!
dave is definitely bringing it, "talent" is his centre piece. i'd wager that FB's angriest ever vocal performance can be found on "baals back". lots of singing from FB and paz, a little shouting too.
no violin on the version i have. |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cephalophore A cephalophore (from the Greek for "head-carrier") is a saint who is generally depicted carrying his or her own head; in art, this was usually meant to signify that the subject in question had been martyred by beheading. Handling the halo in this circumstance offers a unique challenge for the artist. Some put the halo where the head used to be; others have the saint carrying the halo along with the head.

my connection with the band is that i work in music, and happen to be a lucky fella.
expect the first single once june is out of the way, and for the album to drop late summer.
same amount of songs as the last record. no sign of o little cloud either!
Thanks Wilson. Encouraged to hear David's drumming is a bit more manic. I love some of the songs on Indie Cindy but it did feel (understandably) at bit ponderous in places. I am hoping the new one is a bit more nimble. |

Thanks! No particular order. I have no idea how it would flow in that order.
I must say I was excited from that 30 second clip of Super Lecker, a little disappointed it didn't make the cut but oh well. Maybe down the road. |

so, following what has been said before:
quote:
CLASSIC MASHER PICKEREL PICKER RATS ALIVE TRANQUILIZE ME UM CHAGGA LAGGA OONA ALL THE SAiNTS BAALS BACK DOWN IN TOULON HEAD CARRIER I LIKE TO DRIVE PLASTER OF PARIS
7 titles made it from that batch!
dave is definitely bringing it, "talent" is his centre piece
Lets compile all the info we have:
7 tracks from this list as Wilson said.. So, let's extract from that list those we know for sure were recorded: Masher, Chagga, Saints, Baals, Toulon, Carrier, Drive. (=7) + Talent as Wilson also told us.
So, we can extrapolate the following tracks are NOT on the album: picker, rats, tranquilize, oona, paris. + Alice Prin + Super Lecker (as noted by Wilson) and also Banks of the drain, Land of green, Last night, O little cloud, Must be a devil (extrapolated from the list on page 3 and Wilson statement that only 9 on that list were on the album)
So... Album tracklist will likely be:
Masher Chagga Saints Baals Toulon Carrier Drive Talent You Might as well be gone (look page 3, Wilson said 9 songs from the list posted earlier were on the record. Those are the 8 on my list + one other. Wich is not likely to be Oona. So it will probably be "You might as well be gone" (if we look at the screenshot from the Pixies 2016 video, there was I title with its last letters looking like "ona" or "one" --> it's probably "Gone" --> You might as well be gone. As noted by jake3 on page 1).
+ 3 other tracks probably ? New ones or renamed ones (=12)
There's a few songs left on the BMI list (based on the number, highest is most recent I think): Blizzard 1989, Rats Alive, Nevermind (?). Those are from the latest & previous "batch" of songs I think.

Oh OK. SO the "ID number" on BMI doesn't imply the song is newer... So, "Rats Alive" might be the last song left in the BMI list that could be on the album...?

good work on the theory! alas, drive didn't make the cut. 'oona' is there though.
i don't think i'll get in trouble for telling you that the missing tracks are called 'tenement song', 'bel esprit' and 'all i think about now'. anyone recognise these? |

Wilson, thanks for all the info you're dripping us. It's been a tough few months knowing a new record is coming but having no info to go on.
I'm going to pray to the universe that the single drops June 14th, because that's my birthday and I can't think of a better gift than getting a brand new Pixies song. :) |

Thanks Wilson! Guessing that those new songs not on the BMI list were probably recorded during the recent London session?
The most recent titles on the BMI list were noticed, what, towards the end of last year, potential Canada sessions? With so many tracks missing the cut it really does sound like they've been busy and selective about the material.
Hopefully that translates to an outstanding album.

June 14 would be great, kind of a symbol for a release. Kim Deal announced she left the band on June 14.
And it's my birthday too by the way !!
Maybe Mexico, maybe Spain, maybe Puerto Rico. But maybe right back in Boston. |

I feel like Mulder from the X-Files, I "want to believe" in Wilson. Haha. Getting excited but now this all makes the waiting worse.
All I Think About Now and You MIght As Well Be Gone don't sound like Pixies song title to me at all. Those sound like songs from Bluefinger or Svn Fngrs. Now Bel Esprit? THAT sounds like a Pixies song and album title if I've ever heard one. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bel%20esprit |

Does the media Wilson received or saw has the definitive title for all the songs ? Those sound like non-definitive song names to me also.

wellll, the chorus hook of one is "hey man it's the tenement song" . 'bel esprit' is the fb vs paz vocal trade off - sounds like the poppier side of the catholics. listening now and just noticed a cool key change at the end .. there's a whole lot of layers to this record, phew!
'all i think about now' is paz on lead vocal.
also on that tracklist drop 'toulon' and add 'plaster of paris'. not one is in the correct position, but that's part of the fun right!? |

Oh.... Toulon was dropped too ? Toulon & Drive as B-Sides maybe...? Wow !
Looks like the album is nice to listen to ? Does it mean that no awful compression is ruining the whole thing ?
Do you have the final product in hands ? Or some pre-version ?

Now that we supposedly know the definitive tracklist, we can speculate about the songs.
- Baals Back <-- Name for various gods during antiquity. - Head Carrier <-- Song about St Denis - Oona <-- Charlie Chaplin's wife was called Oona ? Also some fictional characters.
Anymore clues...?

The Tenement Song - probably a stab in the dark, maybe a reference to the Pere Ubu album The Tenement Year? That album was their first original member post reunion release at the beginning of their so called 'pop' era (as if you can call Pere Ubu pop!) |

All I Think About Now is clearly about me and the rumour there is a new Pixies album imminent. |

Haha true! Usually any references by BF in his lyrics are like shadows wrapped in enigmas so I also doubt its a direct Pere Ubu reference but I guess in these semi mainstream days even referencing Pere Ubu in any form is leftfield.
If Fissile still posted round here he may claim You Might As Well Be Gone was written by BF about Kim Deal during their Indie Cindy recordings which made her leave! What happened to Fissile?
I see the Breeders are in the studio working on a new album, new Pixies and Breeders, good times ahead.
Whats going to happen to all the tracks that missed the cut? Pixies B sides? Solo album? Grand Duchy (weren't they making new music from the BF blurb a year ago or so?) |

Ha! The lyrical content of YMAWBG could even fit with that scenario .. but as for the user in question, perhaps his passion Fissled out.
I can't stop listening to the record, it's really great. Nicely coherent and showcases everyone in the best of what they do. I don't think every old school Pixies fan will love it, but it's superior to IC.
Paz' vocal is pretty country in places, and she sings on it way more than I'd previously noticed.
Anyone got any further Q's? |

You say that it doesn't sound very old school Pixies.... would you say it feels more like a Frank Black record or a natural progression of Pixies post Indie Cindy? |

Also concerning the unused tracks.... Why not release those on a surprise EP a little later down the road, after the official album has been released? It'd be nice getting a surprise EP that didn't eventually become part of an album like the past EPs did. |

Are there any notable basslines on the record, and is Paz's presence felt beyond her singing?
Would you say Paz's backing vocals are Kim-esque in terms of feeling? Soft to BF's Harder vocals or is BF mellow on most songs?
I am really curious as to whether the music stands out on the tracks like old Pixies stuff or if it's pretty straightforward?
Lastly, lyrically is there any theme you can detect? Is it very much based on French Culture? I wanna know if BF gets weird at all or if it's tame stuff?
Thanks |
