i got this idea from Stevio10 comments in the Strange Creatures/Beings in FBF Songs thread. as well as frank’s comments in peter radiator’s interview where he says, “Well, when you’re a riddler, you just riddle. It doesn’t require extra time to riddle. You know? Trying to figure out what rhymes with elephant is a whimsical challenge. The whole process of songwriting as far as I’m concerned, is riddled with... You know... Games.”

fb/bf/pixies songs with numerical references and possible meanings.

stevio already mentioned monkey gone to heaven. i love robert onion.

For this old Jack-Tar
Three cheers for Robert
To the cinnabar
One ponders

all my ghosts was mentioned before. this is pretty cool.

I had a date for the eleventh hour
And we took a tour of The Seven Horrors
Plus just one more
Hank the Eighth was a duplicated man

one theory was:

11
7 + 1 = 8
8 duplicated = 88

a possible reference to a date: 11/8/88

I was reading an old thread about the Seven Horrors and All My Ghosts. Here is my interpretation of the song and the numerical reference. If you are interested grab a coffee!

Lyrics

If I could live to be several hundred
I could take a walk and really wander
Really wonder
All my ghosts on every sea in every land

Who needs that now? (x3)

Have you heard about the heavenly angels
How they came to earth and met some ladies
With whom they mated?
And their young became giants every one

Who needs that now? (x3)

I was driving across the valley floor
Going past a scene of gore
Something that had ended here
Then I stopped in at a porno store

And I found among the pictures there
A vision that was very fair
Just a moment from yesteryear
All I could do was stare

I had a date for the eleventh hour
And we took a tour of The Seven Horrors
Plus just one more
Hank the Eighth was a duplicated man

Who needs that now? (x3)

http://www.scribd.com/doc/158148815/Fallen-Angels-and-Genetic-Science

This is a reference to the myth of the fallen angels and the war in heaven. God believed that all angels should serve and protect mankind. Lucifer, part of god's kingdom at the time, when down to earth with some angels on a mission from god.

"..As legend states, these angels saw that the women of earth were beautiful and became lustful for them. They mated with them, and as a result were cast from heaven. A great war rose up. The heavenly host was victorious, and Satan, (or the Hebrew ha-Satan, the adversary), and his followers were tossed out of heaven and into hell, a place of eternal fire and torment. Milton's Paradise Lost describes Satan's new home as a place of constant despair for the evil one and his companions. They spend a time bewailing their lost heaven, a place of infinite beauty and happiness. It is this despair that Milton insists drives Satan to plot against God for the rest of time, and for that, he must escape the gates of hell, guarded by Sin and Death. Sin, who was Satan's lover in heaven and once an angel herself, releases Satan. That is only the beginning of what has been a long-standing relationship between the devil and humankind..."

On another website.

"...These are the angels who mated with humans, producing 'god kings' who wrought havoc upon the earth with their misuse of advanced science.."

Hank (Henry) the eighth could be considered a “god king” while wreaking havoc with war. Like many other leaders in history he was a warmonger. Possibly a reference to “I was driving across the valley floor Going past a scene of gore.”

Then the number riddle in the last stanza.

I had a date for the eleventh hour
And we took a tour of The Seven Horrors
Plus just one more
Hank the Eighth was a duplicated man

11
7 + 1 = 8
8 duplicated = 88

A possible reference to a date: 11/8/88. On that date in history George W H Bush beat Mike Dukakis for presidency. Hank the Eighth was a duplicated man?

Then the lines, “Who needs that now?” Possibly meaning do we really need more wars?

Also interesting that FB & C’s did a cover of Larry Norman’s “Six Sixty Six’ on this album. It all ties together!

I had no clue on the numerical game. Here’s the link to the discussion of the Seven Horrors.

Also, the ideas in the “All My Ghosts" song tie well to the All My Ghosts 4 song ep.

Humbolt County Massacre

Quotes:
[Question]: What is "Humboldt County Massacre" about?

Frank Black: Ponder the title. Therein lies the answer my son.
- MusicToday.com Online Chat, January 28, 2001

"I have a new song called HUMBOLDT COUNTY MASSACRE about some Indians who were living in a little Island off of Eureka, California. There were some bad men in the area from the Eastern part of the United States that moved there and killed them all. Typical story from about a hundred years ago. The Indian Tribe is called the wiots. I don’t know if I’m saying it right."

Living on Soul

“Lucky sevens and his grandmother's curse”

Seven reference- not sure if there is any meaning?

“I`m drinking antiknock
I do a mantra and I know PL/1
I do the ragnarok
I`m not a monster just a proto human”

Ragnarok
In Scandinavian mythology, Ragnarok is the battle between the gods and giants/monsters that leads to the end of the world. The battle leads not only to the destruction of gods, giants, and monsters, but to the end of the universe as we know it.

Changing Of The Guards

It’s written by Dylan! He’s a poet! I didn’t have a chance to put much thought into these lyrics but these links seem pretty interesting.
