The intro from Snakes (before Joey's menacing guitar starts) sounds a little Robert Onion to me which is fantastic! |

The intro from Snakes also has elements of Freedom Rock and You Ain't Me (or that's what I seem to hear) This track has grown on me
I find compression on EP2 highly exaggerated, but you can still hear the recording and mixing of guitars is excellent. Very nice electric touch especially at the beginning and end of the first two tracks

I'm enjoying EP2, it is a solid set of tunes. Magdalena and Greens and Blues are my favourite tracks. The new tracks sound like what you'd expect from album #6; older, wiser, more polished and a lot more accessible that the other albums on first listen. Frank has really worked hard on these tunes, and Joey's guitar is way more prominent on this latest batch of songs. It is still a huge shame that Kim Deal didn't stick around to at least finish the album before re-touring a 20 year old Breeders album.
yes, Joey being prominent is so important. the songs where he sounds relatively untreated and allowed to run wild are, for my money, the best of the bunch.
i LOVE Frank's guitar sound on blue eyed and magdalena. i've never heard the pixies sound so "chunky". the first three albums are way more spry for lack of a better word. but it really, really works.

In my opinion, all of these new tracks from Bagboy on are instant classics. Like Charles said in that recent interview, they will be judged differently in the years to come. I hear it now. I just love that we are getting to hear new Pixies music finally, all these years after the reunion and wondering when, or if, they would release some new tunes.
On a side note - I've started a playlist of the new stuff, 9 tracks so far, and alphabetized it. That appears to be bf's intentions with his recent releases - alphabetical catholics, if and when that ever hits the shelves, alphabetical Pixies EP track listings. I'd suggest giving it a try.

agreed. i can't believe what i'm hearing, or that not everybody can hear what i'm hearing. songwriting like this just doesn't come along that often in my opinion. it isn't just that the pixies have 'returned' and are doing this - it's also that bf has upped his game or found a rich vein to mine or however you want to put it, but songs like andro queen and magdalena are just incredible to me.

Yep, these are an outstanding batch of tunes. I'm with the majority that ep 2 is the stronger one. That said, the 1st one aint too shabby!! It's just so exciting that BF and the gang are reaching these heights, and just rolling back those years....... Personal fave is 'Greens and Blues', to me vintage 'Pixies' and will indeed be a great closer for the gigs. I just can't wait for the Cork leg of the tour, even more so now after this fantastic release. |

I'm liking EP2 a lot - hasnt taken long at all to grow on me. 4 songs or not, it's definitely the best album of 2014 so far!
Blue Eyed Hexe - Loving the heavy feel reminds me of Rock Music especially bf yelling Magdalena - still not sure about this one, i didn't listen to many of the live youtubes so had a vague idea on this one and i'm a little let down Greens and Blues - Love it! reminds of something that i can't quite put my finger on, maybe Oasis, a little Weezer, i dunno, i'll figure it out Snakes - i like it even though i get a chuckle from the lyrics (snakes coming to your town in tunnels underground some travelling over ground) that being said i love the cadence of the delivery and there is a Bauhaus-y feel to the singing that i really enjoy and as i'm writing this i'm thinking i like it more the more i analyse my feelings towards it y'know what i'm saying? I think Snakes would fit very nicely with the Golem tunes.

Intro reminds me of I Heard Ramona Sing.
The whole ambiance of the song reminds me of some early Radiohead B-Side or something like that. (Greenwood guitar playing was much inspired by Santiago anyway, so...). I haven't read the lyrics yet (don't understand everything when it's sung), but I really like the eerie/nostalgic athmosphere.
Reaaaally like this new EP ! I made a playlist with EP1 and EP2 and can't stop listening. To me that's 100% Pixies. Minus Kim Deal, but she was not essential (IMO !!!) in the band. My favourites albums being Bossanova & Trompe Le Monde, where she's almost vocally absent (BTW can't believe that Charles said in a Pixies documentary that he wasn't much inspired when writing Bossanova/TLM and regrets not to have rewritten some songs - those two albums being ultimate rock masterpieces IMHO)

Just in case you end up reading this blckfrncs, you should be proud of all the new pixies songs you guys have released this year. You guys really stepped it up a notch, the songs are great. It shows that you all put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into them. Bag Boy and EP1 keep sounding better, and EP2 already sounds ace. |

Agreed. Last night I put all 9 new songs on and played em through a few times. It works. They should be proud, as you said. |

I think time will be kind to EP 1. When all of the politics and expectations become irrelevant, its consistent tunefulness will stand. That's what I think, at least. It remains my favorite of the two EPs, if only by a hair (because EP 2 is freakin' great, too). |

i find it hard to rank them, but i'd say indie cindy and greens & blues are the two clear standouts to my ears.
what goes boom, blue, magdalena, bagboy and snakes all operate on the second tier. great, fun tunes. i pretty much like them all equally.
andro is a little weaker but it'd be nice sandwiched between the aforementioned tunes.
another toe is not to my taste at all. i think had joey been riffing on it i would like it better. |

You guys with these demos are killing us! Would someone break your knee caps if you posted them? Can you at least give us some teasers about what you've got? Do you have all the songs from the sessions?
If you had to compare songs we haven't heard to existing ones how would you do it ie Jaime Bravo sounds like I'm Amazed (not that it does; just making up a for instance).
Or you could just post them and save yourself all the writing...

I think the songs on this EP are generally great but I still think the production throws you off a bit. Obviously it's a fair argument that things have advanced a lot since 87-91 or whenever but it's weird to hear the vocals on a song like Greens and Blues for example, which I'm a fan of, which seem almost auto-tuned in the parts where you'd expect screaming. I think the thing is is that the Pixies these days will always get an unfairly biased reaction based on them not sounding like they were just dropped in from 1991 - which is a ridiculous expectation - and the hero-worship from some parts of Kim Deal and overreaction to what seems like an amicable departure. If the series of EPs continues I can't say you'd expect anything other than lukewarm press at best, even if the songs were absolute genius, because there's the vicious circle of people expecting progression but also wanting a band over 25 years old to sound the same way they did in the 1980s. In terms of the EP itself I'd say Magdalena is the closest they've come to sounding like they did on their LPs, a lot like Bossanova, and that Greens and Blues is my favourite song just ahead of Snakes, both being let down a bit by the production. I think if you look at Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Flag, Dismemberment Plan recently you can see how much the stakes are set against reformed bands. |

I love both EPs, probably because, to me, these are not follow-ups to Surfer Rosa, Doolittle and Tromple le Monde.
To me, they are just new songs from the guy who wrote Surfer Rosa, Teenager of the Year, Black Letter Days, Fast Man Raider Man, Bluefinger and The Golem, all of which I love. |
