Haha, how many records has Chuck made? Am I suppose to like all of them?
But sure, COR has some great songs. Listened to it a lot.

Haha, I don't know Bill. A hell of a lot. I think you probably are supposed to like them yes

I hope there are lots more anyway. It's looking very promising. Roll on the rest of the EPs.

You know, I think it's ok. Just ok? Yeah, ok.
FB and the C's first and TOTY are both better, in totally different ways.

Yep; around me a lot of people H A T E side A.
When Indies Cindy begins to play they're already in another room and say "hey, this third song sounds better, no?" but they dont really hear it.
They think Andro Queen is ridiculously precious but most of all they find Another Toe utterly comercial, like a parody of indie radio rock, they dont understand why on earth the pixies felt obligated to do something that comercial, that probably nobody wanted them to do.

When Bossanova came out people were full of this faux disgust as well. Man those Pixies have let me down!

"Oh the Pixies man, they had this amazing formula, like Kim played this bad ass deep bass, then Charles would scream, then Kim would go wooooooooooo ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh, then Joey would bend some notes, Dave would do some crazy back beat. Why dont they go back to that??"

To them i say look at the catalogue, Bossanove is an epic record, totally different to Doolittle. Trompe a little more progression, FB self titled, evolution, TOTY further evolved etc etc

People for the most part are creatures of habit, they want what they know.

Fuck i mean, we've had 20 years with those records and they are almost the fabric of rock now.

The new stuff is gonna take time to be appreciated.

Not by me though.

a song like another toe is never going to be appreciated the way bossanova or trompe or whatever other pixies album is. the same way no one is going to look at weezer's discography and seriously put some latter day record alongside pinkerton. there's something indelibly pixies about all of their releases save for EP1. andro queen is OK, but it's only a big fat OK. its idiosyncrasies aren't enough for it to need time to be appreciated; it's just a sweet, kind of pixie-ish song that's also utterly slight. that's fine, and i don't mean to disparage its place... it really is OK. but the idea that, like previous other 'contentious' releases, its problem lies in OUR (read: the audiences) hands for not recognizing something new is ludicrous. look at it objectively. there's nothing to process. it sounds like the pixies in a way bossanova and tromple didn't (it's the spirit of the band that provides continuity). it's just an ok song and, in my opinion, a terrible lead in for the first batch of new material in 20 odd years.

as far as another toe goes-- it's samey alt. rock. what's there to process? it's decently constructed, but its charms aren't years away from being revealed. there's no melody twisted enough to need months to parse. it's superficial and could fit alongside a foo fighters record from 2005. you get it on first listen. that's ok, but again, don't pretend the resistance against it lies in an audience fighting change.

that said, for all the complaints against those two songs, the last two address every single problem head on and course correct beautifully. neither sound like any pixies song i've heard, but they're utterly pixies through and through. complex, intriguing, immediate, fun...

Nothing revelatory, but the Pixies are the headline on CNN's Entertainment site.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/17/showbiz/the-pixies-qa/index.html?hpt=hp_bn9

I thought this was pretty cool though:

CNN: If there's an "EP-1," does that mean there's also an "EP-2" and an "EP-3?"

Thompson: It's all one big album, you know.

I like this quote:

CNN: Did she give a reason, or indicate that she might be back at some point?

Thompson: I think when someone makes a big decision like that, it takes a lot of guts to kind of tell the people that you have to tell face-to-face, which is what she did.

I know that when the band broke up the first time around, I sort of broke up the band, but I didn't have the guts to do that. I had to send a message and hope for the best, because it feels like a confrontation, or you feel embarrassed, or you don't want to let people down, you know what I mean?

You know they're going to be disappointed, so I think it probably took a lot of guts for her to personally go, "I'm out," and not just do it in an email.

That's kind of where I was coming from, only half jokingly, when I said hey what are they odds they just get sick of trickling these out sometime in the next year and just release what's left. They could very well end up writing 15-20 new songs over the year that they won't want to sit on just because they locked themselves into this rigid EP schedule. It doesn't have to be set in stone, and if one thing can be said for the Pixies/Charles, it's "expect the unexpected."

Also, the whole "it's all one big album" comment: I got the impression he was trying to say that everything is one big album, like, all his work. Not sure though.

I think he wisely decided not to speak for/represent her and just let her answer that question herself if anyone choses to ask.

??? given that the quote contextual follows this:

CNN: If there's an "EP-1," does that mean there's also an "EP-2" and an "EP-3?"

Thompson: It's all one big album, you know.

he's likely talking about the EP recording session. that's a weird inference from such a specific answer.

Okay Breed, so you think its weird. It's just how I took it - I'm completely fucking batshit sometimes. Given his penchant for between the lines answers in interviews I just read it that way. He was asked a very specific question and gave an answer that I found to be decidedly non-specific. Let's not do this please over something so small. It's just my stupid fucking worthless opinion.

I agree that when FBF referenced "it" being "all one big album," he was describing either the Pixies' entire body of work, or his own body of work as a songwriter.

Lou Reed views every record he has ever made as a chapter in one big book that he'll be adding to until he retires/dies.

I believe FBF approaches his songs and records the same way, and that is what he was trying to get across in that answer.

Could I be completely wrong? Sure.

Do I think I am? Nah.

Assuming things is fun!

Listened today and I have to say some songs are classics. But the b-sides/bonus tracks of that era seem better than Dance War or Kicked in the Taco to me. Village of the Soon, Pray A Little Faster, Anouncement. Man, man, man. How could those not have been part of CoR. I don't have the timetable here, but I think those songs were written at the same time.

My main problem is the production though. Lot's of potential in the songs but the production isn't as sophisticated as TOTY, yet not as raw as FB and The C's. Not a big fan of Lyle's work on this, while he is certainly a great, great player.

According to the liner notes of my Men in Black-single, those b-sides were recorded in the same session.

Well enough of that.

Let's talk about EP-1
