I guess they will have a full album on the horizon with Kim mk. II on bass at some time.
I hope you're right, that would rule.

You don't have to buy it, Pot. You can hear the EP on youtube and decide for yourself.
I can't afford to it. It's not through choice. If it hadn't come up on Youtube I might have stumped up £4 for it. I'm glad I didn't.

Same here, but most people no longer do and although they can count on their old fans (well, most of them) to give it a chance, surely they'd like to gain some new ones as well. This plan does more to keep them on the radar of indie fans than if they just put out an album.
Love counteracting the negativity with my view that these new songs are enjoyable as hell. I'm proud of the fellas for moving on and taking a risk with newness, not hiding behind their proud past accomplishments. |

i definitely prefer albums. i was actually expecting one. i think i still am somewhere.
i listen to albums all the time too. and if it's not an album, i usually forget about it. that's just how i listen to music, unfortunately.
i haven't heard the four new songs yet, for example. i'll probably give them a listen or two tomorrow, and that'll be it for a while. in the back of my mind, i'm still waiting for the album that will contain all these songs. then i'll give it a go. i don't need the buzz. give me an album and i'll listen to it. come and play a show (with available tickets), and i'll be there. |

Enjoying it! Not as immediate as Bagboy and a much gentler introduction to the new material than I was expecting. Andro so cinematic and Indie so epic.
Sweet! |

Jumping into the album debate, I think its silly to say nobody listens to albums anymore. In mainstream circles people don't, but as a relatively young man just coming out of college, albums are still the standard in indie circles. They are what blogs review and people talk about. Whether or not people buy them is a different story. I'm the same way as Discoking, if its not in an album it tends to become filed under "miscellaneous" in my head and not listened to as much. I'm glad they are releasing music, but maybe a half way compromise like Come on Pilgrim or Svn Fngrs would work better? With 6-7 songs it feels more like a real release and becomes a bit weightier. I also feel like with more releases we are going to get more songs that would have been b-sides (Toe) masquerading with the real album tracks and weighing everything down. Perhaps they should be released as bonus tracks on bigger releases? I can understand them not wanting the pressure of the big comeback album, but remember Charles was shooting down the album format around the time of Svn Fngrs as well. Its a shame that they seem to want to participate in the breakdown of the album format, which I think is breaking down not because of the limitations of the album as an art form but because of the limitations of modern attention spans amongst the average joe. |

someone somewhere suggested What Goes Boom is about Kim Deal
Grace in her lace and her stocking carryin' her bass she really likes to get rocking
I would rather say it's about Violet Clark or any fictitious bass player

What Goes Boom is the highlight for me
Indie Cindy is great as a song, but the verse is too mellow (vs the live BF show), and probably has 30 too many seconds
Andro Queen, I adore this ballad and the lyrics, but the mix is meh
Another Toe in the Ocean is no Nickelback or Blink 182 to my ears, but rather sounds like a bad Foo Fighters song (except maybe a couple of measures that remind me of Tale of Lonesome Fetter or similar)
At the end of the day, after 20 listens, I'm glad new material is out (and look forward to receiving the vinyl with seemingly great artwork), but I hope it will get better. Classic Masher, Silver Snail, Greens And Blues, Blue Eyed Hexe, all four have more potential if recorded and mixed well

i agree. i also get the argument that they want to avoid the "comeback album" malaise. but my bloody valentine made a helluva strong argument for the album/comeback album this year.
spent some more time with this ep and indie cindy and what goes boom are really wonderful songs. they don't sound like hackey approximations of old pixies but they still totally sound like the pixies.

I'm thinking of adding Bagboy, and MAYBE Bam Thwok to the EP to turn it into something more substantial (I have a hard time actually getting into a 4 song release). How would you guys work out that track list? |

Maybe it was mistake to read this thread prior to downloading the EP but I've now listened to Another Toe 30+ times on really good headphones and am convinced it's destined to be a Pixies fav. Its power is subtle and it threads a fine line between classic Catholics (in a chuggy second track Back To Rome/Everything is New kind of way) but with slight shades of Pixies wonkiness/textures especially the middle 8.
I skipped Here Comes Your Man for 6 months when Doolittle came out so Pixies growers are not unknown. As for comparison with Nikelback or Blink 182 all I can think is WTF???
Really liking the other three tracks esp What Goes Boom. Agree with earlier posts hearing some NSE in Andro Queen and a Bossanova dreamy feel in other places. I guess they might have gone for that drenchy reverb sound to compensate for the absence of Kim's vocals.
But the main thing I'm hearing from the 5 new tracks is progression, an older more mature sound and not that of a band trying to force an old style. And that makes me stoked about seeing them live and hearing the next bunch of tracks.

i'm all about this shit. keep it coming. these tunes are catchy as hell and sound like upward progress from NSE (of which i'm a big fan).
is the spoken word stuff to replace screaming? i'm fine with these guys making music with no female vocals or screaming and calling it the Pixies. honestly. call it what you will here.

After a day of listening, I really like this EP. Andro Queen is my favourite, probably helped that I listened to it many times when it was first recorded because it is a very subtle melody. |

I don't think I loved any Pixies album on the first listen, they grow on you. I think these songs are definately more catchy and polished than the old stuff, definately produced for radio and I reckon they will work well live. I think the collectable vinyl EP format is smart, although it is going to cost me $100+ by the time they release all these EPs and send them to Australia.
Now that they are doing EPs maybe we'll get new songs every 3-4 months forever! |

I believe the Blink 182-quote was mine. can I take it back? Of course it sounds nothing like Blink 182 in terms of songwriting. It's just the production of the guitar and vocals. But I don't think Blink ever sounded that way. My bad.
Still, it's like a very very slick Foo Fighters. Which is ok I guess. I read on Twitter that somebody compared the vocals of Indy Cindy to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Ah that old chestnut. Progression, now there's an artistic euphemism if there ever was one.
I keep coming back to this and relistening to see if there is ANYTHING positive I can derive from it, and it's sparse.
I absolutely hate this EP and want things to go back to the way they were before all these stupid rumours started flying around. Be careful what you wish for.. |

Wow - 4 new tracks. Just like the old 12" singles of yore. I like the format.
I got this yesterday and thought i would try digest it fully before casting comment.
All in all, i really like it. Bossanova is my fave Pixies record and this has Joey's beautifully textured guitar and reverb all over it.
I see Another Toe is really splitting opinion. Personally i like it. Some one mentioned "everything is new", i agree in that the lyrics are simple to begin but it really layered all in all and it brings me back to Lyle era "village of the sun" and "can i get a witness". The guitar is fantastic / dreamy / sunny.
I think Andro Queen and Indie Cindy are excellent. Another toe is growing on me with every listen.
What goes boom, not so much. Unfortunately it makes me think of GNR's Chinese democracy the song. Guitar lines are quite standard and i wanted a kind of Sad Punk style ferocity.
Anyway whatever, new pixies tunes. I think its an epic EP and a great release for new and old fans, there is something for everyone here. From soft and dreamy to hard rock. Bravo / Life to the Pixies! |

Very disapointed that they're going with the EP thing. Yes, it makes sense if you want to maintain buzz and keep momentum going for the tour. I was hoping that they would have taken the other route, though, the one that doesn't make sense and isn't thinking about momemtum, by releasing an album. The EPs just seem like the safest way to go, a way to test the waters, four songs, nothing too definitive if you like or dislike them, more EPs are on the way.
Funny you mention 'Can I Get A Witness' regarding 'Another Toe', Sam. Also had the same song pop into my head when I heard this new one. Very breesy pop song, we're used to FB songs having more to chew on in terms of musical ideas, this one seems a little thin (especially the verses), but I got to say the chorus has grown on me considerably. Nothing that people haven't heard before, maybe that's why people are comparing it to the Foo Fighters?
I also like Joey's work on the song, his guitar lines always improve everything. When he's doing those wailling sounds, it's like he's bending the poppiness out of the song.
Andro Queen, Indie Cindy and What Goes Boom are great songs, even if they took a few listens. |

i'm treating this release as an Indie Cindy 10" single. second listen much better than the first.
weighing in on Toe: first listen - oh no, this is bad - is this a joke? second listen - this could be ok if it came on randomly during a shuffle of "heavier" type pixies/catholics - needs some screams though [BF should scream toe like he hates the bitch]
side note i listened on iTunes and the last cd i uploaded before this was Xiu Xiu Fabulous Muscles and the EP segues great into Cranked Heart - xiu xiu are quirky wierd but a little more on the electronic side. im late for work

The music business is pretty much the Wild West now. There aren't any rules. And I take it that the band is putting out these records themselves. There's no good reason to make a traditional album if the artist doesn't want to do that. I think the Pixies saw this as a chance to do something different and maybe even to take off some of the pressure to live up to their old albums.
I'd enjoy an album, but I also love the modesty and quirkiness of this EP series. I'm buying them all.
If you want an album, wait for EP 3 or 4 and sequence your own, I say. |
