How is everyone listening to Bagboy? I've burned it onto a cd as part of a compilation of Pixies (and Pixies-related) songs that weren't on LP's or Complete B-sides. This is the track list FYI:
1 Draw Attention (Pre-Pixies demo) 2 Gemini (Pre-Pixies demo) 3 Keeping In Time (Pre-Pixies demo) 4 Silhouette (Pre-Pixies demo) 5 Boom Chicka Boom (Fall Out Shelter version) 6 Rock A My Soul (Purple Tape version) 7 Wild Honey Pie (At the BBC) 8 I Can't Forget (I'm Your Man) 9 Hang On To Your Ego (At the BBC outtake) 10 Born In Chicago (Rubayait) 11 Velvety (Devil's Workshop version) 12 Into the White (FBF version) 13 Bam Thwok 14 Ain't That Pretty at All (Enjoy Every Sandwich) 15 Been All Around the World (Newport Folk Festival) 16 In Heaven (Live- Kim sings) 17 All Around the World (BF live version) 18 Cover of Rolling Stone (BF & JS) 19 Bagboy 20 Andro Queen (BF & JD youtube rip) 21 Greens and Blues (BF youtube rip) 22 Classic Masher (BF & KS youtube rip) 23 Silver Snail (BF youtube rip) 24 Indie Cindy (BF youtube rip)

I just listen to it as a stand alone, or at least I used to a few days ago. |

Classic Mahser, could you share that compilation, maybe upload it somewhere? I haven't heard those pre-pixies demos in years. I think I remember thinking 'Draw Attention' was cool. Thanks anyways.
As for Bagboy, sometimes I go to Youtube and see the video, but mute the sound. |

loudly on quality headphones. i like that faint trashcantateuch drum panned to the right.
this song is so boss. that's the first time i've used that phrase. sorry about that. when he says "it's a feedback loop you can't evict," it's all over. not to mention that harmonica smidge before that (second?) verse.
yeah, this is the fucking jam. it was a grower, surprise surprise. yet i always am.
can't fucking wait for the rest. gil norton has nailed it. i also love his sound on Surfer Blood's new one (as well as the smoking popes/weezer ditties).
she had some beauty and manners.

Hey Classic Masher, quick question: Is that version of "Hang on to your Ego" the same as the one that appeared on "Rough Diamonds" (I thought that one was a BF demo, but I don't think I've heard another one, except the album version)?
As for Bagboy, I think I've listened to it on speakers, headphones or watched the video... but never in a sequence with some of their other stuff. Must try that some time. |

Actually I downloaded a collection that purported to be the Complete Pixies BBC sessions and it was on there as being part of the 1990 session alongside some Bossanova tunes.
What's wrong with compilations. I'm guessing some of you would HATE the one I made of FB+TC songs that sound like Pixies... :-P

Let's see it.
I think you may be the first person to actually say that some FB & the C's songs sound like the Pixies. I've heard the idea that some songs could've made excellent Pixies tracks (actually, I think Bullet is the only one I recall reading that about somewhere on here).
And more importantly, what does "Tearnecet" think of Bagboy?

The box set track listing will be interesting with all the "I" songs in a row.
I guess I understand what you're saying but it could be that after years of listening, there's a firm line between the Pixies and the Catholics for me.
Even when they did one of their excellent covers of Gouge Away (or Nimrods or...), it never sounded like the Pixies to me. I guess I can kinda see your p.o.v. with Bullet, Mondern Age and Blast-Off, but ehh...not that it matters but I don't know.
I don't think anyone on here's ever offered up this idea before; is it lyric based, or music based for you or both?

It's a combination of music and lyrics e.g. music to Bullet is very Pixies-ish but with All My Ghosts it's more lyrical content (mythology, religion, sex).
Matto- You're welcome.

The name of this topic is so wrong, it should be, "check out my list of b-sides, demos, rares etc." Also, it sound really fucking...
There is not a single Catholics song that has ever reminded me of a Pixies song.
I would be interested in a list of Pixies songs the Catholics played live: Wave of Mutilation, Nimrod's Son, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Where is My Mind... what else... also which Orange/TOTY/COR songs they played too, I'd be curious to know, so pot could burn it onto a double disc for me and mail to me at least

I think Wave was played in 98, 99 and in 02 but I don't know if it went beyond that. I think Gouge, Nimrod, Holiday etc. were played a lot in 01 through 03. Velvety and Dance. were mainly in 01. Cactus I'm pretty sure, was only played in 03.
Even though there were the core ones, through 01 to 03 that were played a lot, if not at every show, I still loved hearing them. I think the Catholics did an amazing job with the songs, the variety of instruments were able to flesh out/expand the songs in a way the Pixies four piece didn't.
Check out this verison of Gouge from 01.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBXYjtcreTA
The heavy drums at the intro, the tension, building and building before Frank sings, is incredible. Yes, the Pixies exteneded the intro to Gouge a bit in 91, but ten years later, the Catholics really took the song to another level.
Like I said before, the sparse pedal steel guitar version of Monkey is incredible. Maybe someone on here can share it. In that version, they go the opposite way of Gouge, while that song is more bombastic, this one reduces the song till it's just Frank and the pedal steels (I don't know if Scott plays on it), revealing just how strong the foundation of the song is, how Frank was able to do so much with so few elements.
Cactus gave Rich a chance to shred the solo!
In each case, the band was able to make these covers their own and at the same time, show how awesome Frank's solo and Catholic songs were; they all felt of a piece; especially when blasted out sans set list, one after another.

I saw them play with only dual pedal steel guitars on Monkey Gone to Heaven, Rich and EDF, was good. I also rememeber Nimrod's they would slow down the second chorus way down. Best band on earth at the time. |

I always thought Angst had quite a Pixies feel in some way. I'd be very curious to hear a new noisy version with Joey on electric guitar and a screamed chorus, for example. "... feeling of AAAAANNGST". But we're not in 88 anymore :\ |

I watched a clip of Pixies in 2005 from the loud quiet loud documentary, forget which song it was but it didn't have the same energy as in 1988. Frank's guitar style was more lazy as well, he was strumming the riff as down-up-down etc. as opposed to down-down (which requires twice as fast wrist action and produces a slightly different effect). It was less punky and edgy and in your face and just didn't work as before. remember in th eold days when he used to play the guitar and his arms looked to small for his body?
I just feel like BagBoy is too forced, it's a bit fake really. I mean why bother trying to make Kim sounding backing vocals, just get another female vocalist in with her own style and I'm sure it'll sound great, there's plenty of them out there. |
