Kim, I wish you'd read all the "Kim hate" on this board. All these guys throwing you under the bus. But, more than that, the (MUSICALLY) immature fantasizing that if FB just puts out something new and labels it "The Pixies" that it will magically.......majestically......really... become "the Pixies". haha. It's like listening to 12 year olds thinking "if Lennon hadnt died couldnt the Beatles have gotten together again?"
I think you're setting up a false conflict here. Now, I don't know what's going on elsewhere on the internet, but here I see little hate for Kim Deal here.
I like Kim Deal. I think she's written some great songs and made some great records. And I've never held the lack of a new Pixies record against her (because I've never had a strong opinion about whether or not the Pixies should make new music--I enjoy Black Francis's solo stuff enough.)
If there IS a conflict (this thread is a little light on the "fighting", if you ask me), I think it's not "people who hate Kim Deal" vs. "people who love Kim Deal".
Rather, I think the conflict is "People who regard the Pixies as a sacred thing" vs. "People who don't regard the Pixies as a sacred thing".
Me, I'm firmly in the latter camp. I just want to hear Frank's new songs, whether it has "Black Francis" on the spine or "Pixies" or some other band name ("Frank, Joey, and Dave have decided to form a new band called The Stinky Fuckfaces!"--I'd buy it).
Great post. Couldn't agree more, especially on what the "conflict" really comes down to. No matter what they are called, I'd be ecstatic to hear what the guys could come up with. |

Releasing albums and performing under the Pixies name enables Black Francis to play to larger crowds and enables Joey and Dave to make a living from music. It won't be the same, but it will be 3/4ths Pixies and without all the Kim Deal tantrums. |

bit of a non-even this news. who cares these days? when the band has been 'reunioned' longer than they were together originally, it's all turned into a bit of a joke. granted they've never said it's about anything more than making some cash, so i can hardly begrudge them. but seriously, does it matter? not to me.
if they did the blonde redhead thing, that i would have to listen too. great band that. or perhaps get kristin hersh to play bass. that i would pay big money to see. but it has to be something interesting otherwise i'll go do something else. but in saying that i'm not particularly interested in hearing new pixies music. hell, i like living in the past.
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

Wow. Reading the 6 pages of this thread was a bit long and tedious. To sum up, Helmut and Jason are right. Biggest idiot is simibaby. I kind of think new stuff by BF will come out soon, whether it's with the Pixies + some random bassist, or a new solo record cause he's finally gonna put an end to the Pixies reunion and release everything he's recorded over the last couple of years. At leadt that's what I hope cause I'm tired of waiting.

Kim was right to leave. Pixies are my favorite band ever, but I'm fed up with them now.
If Charles wants to replace Kim, so be it, but to me Pixies cannot be without Kim.
May I suggest a name? Ginger Pooley. |

If the Pixies release a new album, they will get rid of their legend status to become (again) just another band. It would be a miracle if they were able to make groundbreaking albums as the first two they put out when they were in their early 20's. It is safer to assume they are able to record good albums, maybe excellent ones able to feature the end of the year top 10.
Changes of lineups is part of the normal history of a band. Keeping 3 out of the 4 original members, 25 years after, is quite a remarkable feat compared to other bands. And a new member can bring something new to the sound and even to the future chemistry and songwriting. In anycase this songwriting cannot be similar to the early one as BF has evolved as an artist.
Kim may have had the choice of being a member in BF's full time band or being the lead in her successful band. Just two bands, forget the legend(s). This may be as simple as this.
I find it somewhat incoherent to both blame the Pixies for not releasing anything new since the reunion and stating the Pixies are not the Pixies anymore without Kim. Kim leaving the Pixies is for me a sign that they become a band again, with the willigness to take the risk of being criticized on their new material and new line up. Nothing more, nothing less than what most living bands experience during their lifetime. |

EDF already played shows with the original lineup so he would fit right in. Plus he would be Charles' natural choice I reckon. EDF usually guests on bass, like with PJ Harvey for example. But kiss goodbye to the harmonies.
But anyway, I'm with benji and Antonho.

The Brighton indie collectiv have demanded Suzi Horn remain in Prinzhorn Dance School, so we need to keep looking for Kim replacement. |

In fairness John Robb knows his stuff, he was clued into the Stone Roses reformation way before most. He is a fairly well respected musical writer/figure in Manchester and my guess is he could be a mate of Dings.

I didn't know that, just someone I started following on twitter for some reason. I have no clue if his sources are legit, I'm just passing on the info. Curious about the new english bass player, as far as I know Kim Shattuck is American? Maybe the new bass player who rerecorded with them is Ding? |

Yes, it was during the Trompe tour; Feldman played on Gouge, Motorway and I think Alec Eiffel too. Maybe some other songs. I think that was when they first started extending the intro to Gouge. Later, the Catholics would really run with it.
Pixies without Kim doesn't feel right. Heck, it feels wrong. I'll still check out the new songs.

If the bassist is, indeed, English, my best guess is that it's Ding Archer. |

The "never-ending" reunion tour never bothered me. It gave a lot of people a chance to see them; they did the Doolittle thing and even played that long concert in Brazil, I think it was Brazil. They were even upfront about the financial motive. Their music has brought me a lot of joy and I gladly plunked down whatever the cost was for the show and some of the live releases. So what if they didn't record new music? Their discography is amazing. It's a shame there were a lot of songs they never played over the past nine years. And it wasn't as if Frank stopped recording new music; the man kept up his incredible pace.
I guess I never really agreed with people who said they were sick of the reunion. I understood; but it never really bothered me.
I would've liked a proper good-bye show or at least one with Kim if they're going to continue to use the name. But I guess that sort of moment was never really their style; I just wonder how it would've gone, knowing that she's quitting and this is it, the last show of the original line-up. Maybe we would've gotten a ten-minute Gigantic.
It's moot now. |

Kelley just tweeted from Glasgow. I didn't realise The Breeders tour was here now. No Edinburgh gigs (as usual bands seem to think there is only one city in Scotland when they tour) So I guess that means Kim is in Glasgow now! Just saying. |

I hope not really. I don't want the new bassist to be a guy, I want someone like Kim. If it's a guy it just wont be the Pixies. I mean, Pixies with no female backing vocals? I don't think so...
A large number of Pixies songs wouldn't work with male backing vocals. Maybe the new bass player will be a dude, and Thompson will bring in a female/s to do the backing vocals?
That said, I'm not surprised that Kim refused do to new Pixies. When the reunion started, she seemed to suggest that she'd be open to doing new material, but that quickly changed to outright refusal, and she's been consistent ever since.
On the other hand, I'm not sure what Thompson's next move will be. In an interview Thompson did last year he said that he couldn't continue the Pixies without Kim because, "They (the audience) would stone me." Hmmmm. |

Maybe the Pixies just won't do those songs anymore that Kim Deal was a major part of, vocally. If they have new songs, they'll do those instead. Or they'll just play some of the old songs without her. Frank Black has performed Pixies songs solo acoustic and with The Catholics for years, with Kim Deal nowhere within a thousand miles. He can figure it out.
The way I see it, all of the Pixies have done very well from this reunion. They've made their millions and can afford to take some chances. |

I can see Ding filling in on the studio tracks but I reckon BF will recruit a female bassist for any potential touring Pixies might do. Or maybe Dave will take over the harmonies; a great thought.

Maybe Dave will sing Make Believe; a refreshing change to La La...
Maybe it'd be best if they just temporarily retire the more prominent Kim songs; thus getting more Bossa and Trompe performed. |

Pixies/Smixies. If they continue it really needs to be a female bassist. Violet's background vocals did sound good on Bluefinger, but I would rather that not be the choice.
No idea who to nominate, but personally, if Santiago and Francis are in the band they are the Pixies. The uniqueness and originality of Santiago's guitar playing had more to do with the Pixies sound than Kim Deal's voice. And I really feel her voice is a lot more replaceable then fans want to believe.
I would love to hear new music with Kim, but am really more interested in new music, Kim or no. |

I think there's something going on with these four personalities that can't be replicated. Yes, I'm here because I love Frank's music through the different permutations; I thought the Catholics did an amazing job playing Pixies songs; in some cases, even better than the Pixies. And yet...I think it may feel different to them on the stage in ways that one can't foresee. I recognize the huge speculation there.
Still, new music from Frank with Joey and Dave; the original Pixies discography remains inviolate and we get new Santiago music with Frank. If there is a new album... |
