The silence around here and the lack of output from the man is starting to border on disturbing.
I don't think I'm out of line in saying that a Grand Duchy release between The Golem (about 4 years ago) and now just ain't cutting it. The webstore over at blackfrancis.net has been nothing but cobwebs since god knows when - we've been chewing ice for years now.
Is he mad that we didn't like the last GD album? Busy with the kids? Home life? I understand all that, I'm just wondering, as an ardent supporter and a guy who has spent a small fortune on the man's work, what's the word? How bout a bone? The news thread on frankblack.net still has the last album listed by the working title name, and that thing that was recored as a one-off in a couple days wasn't anything to write home about.
Are we done here?

If you think this is bad you should have seen the MBV forums circa 2003 |

He started preliminary work on a new album about a year ago. BF spending that long on an album (regardless whether or not it's for Pixies) is gonna result in something special or something totally anti-climactic. I bet it's the former.

New album next year. Catholics box set next year.
It's gonna be cool.
In the meantime, follow Frank on Instagram and see pictures of his paintings. |

The last year that Frank didn't put out a new record in some form or another was 2000. Every year since, SOMETHING has come out, whether its Frank Black, Black Francis, Frank Black Francis, Francis & Paley, or Grand Duchy. |

I can kinda see johnnyribcage's frustration. Grand Duchy, Reid Paley and other side projects are all well and good (some weller and gooder than others), but a fresh Frank/Francis record is a joy all its own.
I think the winter is going to be a real whirligig |

The last thing I heard was that the man himself thinks a really great record is overdue and he's working on it. Knowing him we won't be waiting much longer.

I vacillate between feeling very spoiled by and grateful for the man's massive body of work -- steadily produced and released over a quarter century now -- and selfishly wanting more. Primarily the latter. It helps to think about great musicians I fell in love with in my teens who have produced nothing, or very little, since that time. Thank goodness I didn't hitch my fan-wagon to one of those acts, since I'd be starved by now.
But still, there is a persistent "want-more-Frank Black Francis music" itch that needs scratching, and I am always hopeful that the man himself feels a corresponding itch to create more of that music.
Waiting as patiently as possible... |

I agree with johnnyribcage and Nate in the PDX. At the same time.
But hey, didn't you hear, there is a new MBV album coming up. No shit. What could keep you more fully entertained than that? Even if it's a fiasco, it will be fun to watch.

Frank has been lackluster for nine years running. Sorry, but true. Middle age and family life has cemented him. And I'm not saying that with any negativity or disrespect.

I gotta agree with you. I think it's done. I really doubt there is going to be any new Pixies. Deal is going to tour her Last Splash album this summer, if it gets a good reception, I'll bet she continues through the fall. Anyone believe that the Pixies would put out a new album, and then not tour?
I'm gonna guess that Thompson went to the UK with Joey, laid down some tracks, and then couldn't get Deal to agree to go along....that's why you are not hearing anything. If a new CD was in the works, do you really think they could keep it a secret this far into the process? |

I'm slowly catching up to some of Frank's post Fastman albums. I think there's greatness in some of Bluefinger and while I've only listened to it once so far, I think that's true of the Golem as well. I think someone described it as the lost Catholics album which seems pretty apt.

I think this place will liven up if the Pixies release a new album and/or if Frank releases a stunning masterpiece. I had chopped up some Serrano peppers in my stir-fry the other night, very tasty.
Oh, maybe the Catholics box set will reinvigorate the forum. |

I still like Frank's music. That Paley & Francis record is underrated here, I think. If he's slowing down, well, I think he deserves the break. Let the man take care of his kids, for Chrissakes!
I'm looking forward to whatever he has coming up this year. I don't care if it's a Pixies record or not. I'll take new Frank songs in any form. |

For what it's worth, in terms of what may be going on, as the topic asks - I just noticed that BF posted a tweet from a company called "Fuzed Travel" which reads "
Fuzed Travel #8207;@FuzedTravel Looking forward to be booking your 2013 tours"
So it looks like there might be some touring on the horizon, I guess. |

I doubt it will be new Pixies, unless he's planning on new Pixies without Kim. |

They might have agreed on a joint New Pixies + Last Splash world tour... Kelley likes to travel with Kim... it could be a sensible decision Breeders opening for the Pixies would send the audience crazy

So Kim would be playing two full sets every night? Do you have any idea how tiring it is to play one set? That's just being silly.
Let's look at the facts without any nonsense.
Kim is going to tour Last Splash this summer, and it's an open ended tour....how many shows in total will depend on the kind of response they get....it could very well go into the fall. How can the Pixies plan a tour without knowing what Kim's plans will be?
Secondly, as you've seen from Kim's preparations for her Last Splash Anniversary Tour there is a tremendous amount of work involved to produce such a thing. Kim is going to go through all the exhausting work of Last Splash, and go through all the post production stuff for a new Pixies CD AND go through all the work required to tour a new Pixies CD? If true, Kim has become Wonder Woman.
Talking of new Pixies, if there was a new Pixies CD in the works, it would be in post production now and ready to go off to the CD makers. Does anyone really believe there wouldn't have been some kind of leaks by now?
I stand by what I say, I'm betting there will be no new Pixies this year....at best they'll may do a short Bossanova tour at the end of the year. |

You know, to me it doesn't seem to be that exhausting. You can make a record in three weeks, heck in three hours if you want.
You might be right about the tour schedules, good point, but I don't think Kim ever did much post production. In fact, I never heard about the Pixies spending months on recording

Kim playing Last Splash involves a certain amount of energy, I agree Fissile, but the record is not that long, and playing bass for the Pixies afterwards , with the massive crowd encouraging her, should boost her and not exhaust her. Her bass style is really static, almost "minimal service", it's not as if she were the drummer in both bands (which I am so I know how exhausting it can be to play two full sets) As for the touring "jam", I think all the plans are already done for the Pixies since last summer or even before (as Violet alluded to). Therefore, marketing plans for the album launch are already made AND tour dates are almost certainly already booked. Which makes me think that Kim either organizes the Breeders tour knowingly of these dates, or that she might make them coincide
