Yup, doesn't sound like she's involved in any new Pixies stuff. Looks like it's going to be a new FB record featuring the guitar work of Joey Santiago. Teenager of the Year Part Deux? |

I read the article very fast, so where exactly is that implied?

I'm reading into it maybe a bit much, but for me the evidence is fact that Kim's been in LA doing her solo material and prepping for Breeders 20th. The report (if that's what it could be called) of Kim in LA, or anyone in LA, recording Pixies seems diminished. Add to that BF and JS were in Wales, that Dave Lovering commented (coyly or not) that he hadn't been told of the recording - it just appears that the reunion is over. |

I have to agree with you. If they had a new album coming out, they would need to tour it, and Kim's Last Splash tour means no Pixies tour, which means there isn't going to be a new Pixies CD. Well, I always said the reunion was just a money grab. It was obvious that Charles still doesn't like Kim, and Kim still doesn't trust Charles.
An EP and 4 albums is what we're ever going to have from the Pixies.
All things must end. |

Plenty of time for both a Breeders and Pixies tour. If there is a new Pixies album I wouldn't be surprised to see the consequent tour dragged out like what was done for the Doolittle concerts - album to be released next Spring accompanied with a bit of touring, further touring in the autumn and winter until they get bored of it sometime near the end of 2014. |

Plus, there's also this:
quote: How’s the album coming along? Steve: It’s done! It’s due out in March, about the 18th I think. We’ve another EP coming out before then and videos, we love doing videos. But yeah the album’s done, just needs to be mixed. We went to the Rockfield Studios in Wales to record it. Oasis recorded there, Bohemian Rhapsody was also written and recorded there. Mark: When we were there, we were in Studio 2 and The Pixies were in Studio 1! Steve: There’s a wall there that they call “The Wonder Wall” because Liam sat up on it and sang and recorded from there. Mark: And you can hear the birds in the trees at the beginning of one of the recordings. http://www.skiddle.com/news/all/Big-in-2013-Kodaline/15206/

The guy interviewed in that article hadn't been born when the Pixies started. Fact is that only Joe and Charles have been seen together at Rockfield Studios. Fact is that Kim is touring Last Splash this summer. The summer season is when most of the big acts tour. Pixies touring in support of a new album would be huge, the kind of thing that would be scheduled for a summer tour.

I don't see what the guy's age has anything to do with anything. Pixies touring a new album would be huge yes but they're hardly gonna give a shit whether or not it's summer when they tour. I can't see BF being too enthused about trying out new material in front of festival audiences just there to hear HCYM and WIMM and throw beach balls around.
Anyway, I'm not saying a new album is certainly on the cards; it's just that I don't see why you would completely and emphatically dismiss everything hinting toward a new release (the Norton connection and remarks by Perry, Kodaline, Violet Clark, some French magazine and even BF) on the basis that a new Breeders tour is forthcoming, which - excuse the pun - isn't that big a deal. |

No, summer is festival season. Big tours are generally spring/autumn.

I mean this guy probably only knows of the band because it's one of those things that people in the music biz are supposed to know. I'll bet he doesn't actually know the names of the individual members.....or even how many members are in the band.
Fact still remains that no one has seen all four near a studio at the same time, much less in a studio, unless you want to believe that Kim and Dave are going to phone it in. |

Is there any chance that Joe and Charles have the gall to record a Pixies album without Kim and Dave? I'm assuming there would be legal ramifications to that, but stranger things have happened.

He can do what he wants, he owns the name "Pixies". Thompson can hire a bunch of session musicians and call it Pixies, and there is nothing the others can do about it. Dave, Joe and Kim can not get together without Thompson and call it Pixies, because they would immediately be hit with a "cease and desist" from Thompson's lawyer.
I really doubt that Thompson would try such a thing. In a recent interview he stated that he couldn't continue the Pixies without Kim, "Because the audience would stone me."
There is one of two things happening here: 1)It's going to be a new Thompson/Santiago project not called Pixies. 2) Charles and Joe laid down some tracks, sent it to Kim and she said, "Sounds like shit. I'm not getting involved." |

I'd be surprised if they'd flown out to Rockfield for a month just to record some demos. But I'm prepared to be wrong! |

Lyle Workman did most of the lead guitar on toty. Santiago was the main guitarist on the orange album... When he played with the catholics I think he always shared the lead guitars with the others, but maybe you can hear a lot of Santiago on Dog in the sand? |

It sure looks like she jumped ship. I think her excuse of "tarnishing" the band's legacy is just bullshit. She doesn't have any problem "tarnishing" the Breeders legacy.
She acts like what she is: A woman scorned. Back in the day, Thompson was dismissive of her. He nuked the band and didn't tell her....didn't talk to her for 12 years...not a single word. He refused to talk about her at all. Years ago when Thompson was being interviewed for some magazine, he was asked about his opinion of Kim's Last Splash success. Thompson didn't say a word and just hung up the phone.
Kim refuses to participate because she won't give Thompson the satisfaction. Simple as that. |

Typical response of fan boiz.
Here are the facts:
The main reason for the Pixies break-up was the EXTREME animosity that existed between Charles and Kim. This animosity was so bad, Thompson didn't speak a word to Deal for 12 years. There are Black fans who blame Deal, and visa versa....I'm not really interested in hanging blame all one or the other....but the bad feelings are an undeniable fact.
Thompson's motivation for reforming the Pixies was money....simple as that. Charles wanted to start a family, but his lamentable solo career wasn't earning him enough to cut it. Joe and Dave needed the cash just as badly. Kim didn't need the money as badly, but I'm sure the lucrative offer motivated her in part. I also believe that she did want to help Joe who needed the cash to raise his family. Despite all of Kim's failings, I believe that she is capable of such sincere gestures toward people that she likes.
It's also quite obvious that since the reunion Thompson and Deal have not really come to terms with each other. They manage to be civil with each other, but there is no friendship.
Since the reunion, Thompson has repeatedly played his fans for chumps. He talks cryptically of new material, hinting that it might be new Pixies, and then churns out some craptastic embarrassment featuring his talentless wife.
I think the recent Deal interview linked at the top of this thread hints at what is really taking place. For instance, Kim states that milking past glories for money is the only option for someone who wants to continue with music as a "hobby". Whom is she referring to? Herself or Thompson?
I'm gonna bet that there aren't going to be any new Pixies....certainly not with Deal on board. |

Who knows what's going on? I suppose we'll all be in the know at some point in the coming few months. Until then, all this Frank vs Kim stuff made me want to relay a pretty funny story I'd never heard before. It's from "I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen"--the new Leonard Cohen biography, and is told to reveal how Charles came to first hear Leonard Cohen. It says that in 1990 Charles was on "a particularly grim European tour with his band" when he "happened upon a cassette of 'I'm Your Man' at a french gas station." He hung onto the tape until he was in Spain where the band had a break for a few days. "'The plan,' says Francis, 'had been for us to all go to a beach town with nightclubs. But the band wasn't in a happy space and I really wanted to get away from everybody--in particular Kim, the bass player.' He asked the tour manager to take him somewhere quiet, where he could be alone. He was dropped at a large, empty tourist hotel farther down the coast. Checking in, he saw to his chagrin that Kim Deal had the same idea. 'The hotel assumed we were the best of friends and, although there were eight hundred rooms in this hotel and no one in it, they put us right next to each other. We were both too exhausted to resist and just accepted our fate.'" It goes on to say that Charles listened to the I'm Your Man tape over and over for three days straight. He checked out of the hotel a fan. |
