According to the Los Angeles Times, the Pixies have contributed a track to the upcoming "official" Warren Zevon Tribute CD, to be released sometime this fall on Artemis Records.
The label is trying to keep the 15 participating artists and track listing a secret, but news of the Pixies' involvement leaked out on yesterday.
Other artists that are confirmed as contributing tracks are Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Wallflowers, Pete Yorn, Jackson Browne, Zevon's son Jordan, Jill Sobule, and (ahem) Adam Sandler.
Although the L.A. Times article did not name the songs the Pixies had cut, later in the day, Zevon's son confirmed that it was "Ain't That Pretty At All," and said that it "rocked hard."
What great news for all of us Pixies/Zevon enthusiasts!
And how appropriate for them to cut such an obscure nugget by an unexpected influence, just as they did with Neil young and Leonard Cohen...

Cool news - must admit to being ignorant of Warren Zevon - what's a good album to check out?

To my ear, they're all over the map, and many of them are pretty shitty. However, when he nails it, it's out of the ballpark.
For his earlier work, I recommend Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School and The Envoy. Later on, I suggest Sentimental Hygiene (which features R.E.M. as his backing band plus Dylan on harmonica), and Mutineer, on which he mostly played all the instruments himself.
Learning To Flinch is a good solo live album from the early '90s on which he plays guitar and keyboards on new arrangements ofmany of his classic songs.
Happy hunting.

What kind of music is it? Does it fall into a particular genre? Any other artists he reminds you of?

His most famous song by far is "Wearwolves of London". It's rock with an emphasis on lyrics (whatever that means). |

I tried to find the track on iTunes (Ain't that pretty at all) and couldn't... is that the actual name? there's a lot of Zevon on iTunes.

wow! that's pretty cool! nice surprise, wasn't expecting to hear a new pixies tune when i logged into the forum just now! very lo-fi i thought, well doesn't seem to have been produced much at all, but i like it. it's raw. rock!

Aah yes, I like that song. Anyway, this is a great cover, having heard it now. His most famous song by far is "Wearwolves of London". It's rock with an emphasis on lyrics (whatever that means).

that's what i said above pixiesteve. you can just call me the invisible man.
i'm hoping that that first note is a sign saying that if they do release more material it may be along the lines of toty- fun, poppy, rockin, quirky. that would be great because toty is my favorite frank albums and one of the most underrated albums of all time!!! here that!

Wow! Excelente song, i think i prefer this to Bam Thwok, apart from the great bit with the organ, that just so random and always makes me laugh.

The whole Zevon album rocks! I downloaded it from www.downloadpunk.com. "Ain't That Pretty At All" only continues their legacy. Let's hope for a full album! |

WTF?
This is the first I ever heard about this.
I like it more than Bam Thwok...

I think they should at least write a few more songs, an EP perhaps. Frank's voice has matured a little since 1991, I think his and Kim's vocals could work well together again, in a slightly different way. |
