Also I gotta say (again) Frank is looking trim in that video, he must have dropped 10kg or more. Good work Violet on getting him cycling.

Oh come on how could the Pixies ever win with a new album? Too Pixies sounding (retreading old ground) not Pixies sounding enough (Frank Black vanity project). Also IMHO his work has not been his best in the last few years, unless he has been squirrelling away amazing tracks to use for the Pixies.

To come back with any force they would need a freaking amazing album, not insipid Pixies lite.

I don't honestly think they have it in them, leave it. <I would love to be wrong>

It has the potential to be interesting......if they got Kim back on the drugs and booze.

Exactly, the Golem and Mountain Battles tell me the key ingriedients are still there, add Joey and Dave to the mix and you have one very special band. Even if its not Doolittle 2 its gonna be a new Pixies record and thats the best news i've heard in way too long.

I'm just happy to get new Black Francis music, whether it's got Pixies or any other name on the cover.

That's cool. Doubt he's replacing Kim or anything, but it's nice to see BF putting in a shit-ton of effort for this.

Jeremy Dubs is a good guy. It'd be cool if the demos were released in some form, too. Maybe as a bonus disc in some limited "collector's edition" of the album or something.

I think just because it's got the imprimatur of the Pixies on it it will receive more attention than any of Frank's solo albums which right from the demise of the Pixies have been remarkably obscure a bit like David Byrne who has done some solo album that are better than TH albums but they get nowhere. I don't believe any of this crap y/t comment makers make about it 'being the right thing' to not record an new album since the reformation. Fuck it! It'd be a Pixies album. Unless something goes disastrously wrong creatively it should be fine.

Just today i was thinking about that David Byrne album "Rey Momo" that i hated at the time and now i think it might be his best solo album and would rank in the top list of TH albums. That's just the problem with being a fan: you want the same thing again but if they give you the same you won't like it anyway. It's like wanting being young again or something like that. I want FB to record a tropical album! ...mmm maybe not...

Fans are fickle. I agree. I had the same experience with Rei Momo by the way.

BF clearly only does what he wants to do. I couldn't ask for more. Some albums I'll like more than others. That's okay. It's normal.

If there's a new Pixies album I'll listen to Radio 1 right after I've spun that disc to remind me how good it really is. That's if I need reminding.

I have to say I haven't actually listened to the golem, my interest was waning and I couldn't actually work out wtf it was Is it an actual album? I have no interest in watching the film.

I enjoyed lots of the things from bluefinger/svnfgrs (or whatever it's called) haven't heard nse, which is surprising, judging by how obsessed with this place I once was, grand duchy pretty much bored me to tears tbh.

Wasn't impressed at all by androqueen though, if that would be the standard of a pixies album, in the immortal words of the dragons "I'm out".

Seems like it is happening though, I can't imagine they would release it unless they were all happy with it, good on them, hope it's marvellous

"loving on our bed of flowers, breathing in the smell of her musk" I mean seriously, boakety boak boak. If that is ever a Pixies lyric I shall bury said CD in the garden, just in case it infects other CD's with it's shiteness.

Kind of hard to judge a lyric without any context. That lyric to me isn't any worse (in terms of boak factor) than "He took his sister from his head and then painted her on the sheets" - but the Holiday Song is a classic, we can only imagine what the new stuff (if it is Pixies) sounds like.

I'd love that tbh. I hadn't really pegged Joey as being especially creative but some of the Avatar songs really impressed me.

you hadn't pegged Joey as being creative? so you don't consider his guitar work for the Pixies to be creative?

i actually wasn't joking, or trolling. i'm not that into the idea of a new Pixies record, but that's just me. not going to rally against it. hope i'll be pleasantly surprised. and yes, i'll buy it and see them tour it. just not that excited about the idea though, for various reasons.

something with him and Joey though would interest me. seems like everything they do together is gold, and they seem to still be friends. i would take that over a Frank Reid Paley thing any day of the week. remember "the kitchen tapes" Frank and Joey recorded in the TOTY era? for me i'd be more excited to hear an album of stuff that would come out of something like that

Not troll. Sneak! You stole the post I would have written.

It's a bit strange to find someone else with same view of a new Pixies album and the Frank/Joey creative partnership. Now I'm curious about your 'various reasons'. Mine are that I'm happy with my 1988-91 memories of hearing their albums and seiing them play. Don't need them watered down.

But if they recorded under a new name, that would be a game changer. Though that sounds silly I know. Best of all would be a Frank, Joey and two guitars, pared down album. That I'd really be excited to hear. Never gonna happen.

As someone who remembers music before the Pixies, let me say that almost no one
was using dissonance with the consistency that Joey introduced in Rock'n'Roll.

Apologies, I wasn't very clear (I graduated last night and my head is suffering accordingly). What I was meant to say was that I never really considered Joey to be creative in terms of melodies, song structures etc., believing BF to be the main man responsible for these things. (This is all supposition, I acknowledge.) And then it was Avatar that made me realise that Joey, as well as being able to play the guitar very fucking well indeed, can also craft a song pretty well himself.

I think he's a brilliant guitarist and definitely one of the most distinctive ever. As much as I love the likes of J Mascis, Bob Mould and Greg Sage their 'sound' doesn't seem as original or creative as Joey's.

For some reason I completely missed out on the Everybody. Has this thing ever been released on CD/LP?

Don't think so. You can stream or buy the MP3s here: http://www.theeverybody.com

I've probably exaggerated it tbh. It's essentially a cool side project with three or four good instrumentals and a couple of duds to boot. Worth the $4 for Surf Spy, Marooned and Lonely Cholo.

Something that, strangely, nobody discusses here is FB's lost of interest for unconventional pop music (or maybe i should say his growing interest for conventional pop music). He still creates some inconspicuously twisted chords progressions and that's allways amazing, but there is no more revolutionary aspect in his work, it's just gone... The Neil Young fan killed the Pere Ubu fan, or something like that... that's not necessarily bad, but it's seems worthless to try again the quirky vibe when there is no real desire to do so (The Seus for example, sounds like "ok what was that quirky Black Francis vibe again?"). I remember an interview, Bluefinger era, where he frankly said he didnt want to come back to rock but had to because his alt country vibe didnt have a lot of audience... after that, i can't really think he's 100% doing what he wants...

as an aside, i ran into Joey Santiago at a bar in Los Angeles a few months back. i was drunk. he was too. as he and his friend were leaving i asked him if they were recording a new Pixies record. his friend kind of guffawed. and Joey gave a non-response funny face response which i took to mean "yes but I can't talk about it"

thus. the news is official. my drunken conjecture from a non-answered question = official news
