None of those new songs sound anything like Pixies. To me, Greens & Blues sounds like a Bluefinger outtake. Snail sounds like a FMRM outtake. Andro sounds like an Erotik outtake. Not that they are, they just sound about as far from Pixies as anything he's done that sounds far from Pixies.

These songs sound great, and would make a solid forward looking Pixies album. No one Pixies album sounded the same as the other the first time around, why would they release a derivitive sounding album now? To those who don't want to hear new Pixies music, I suggest purchasing the Minotaur box set. |

Yeah, it's not 1992 anymore. I think Frank is much less nostalgic for the 90s than some people here are.
In any case, I think these new songs sound good. I have no idea how or in what form they will see eventual release, nor will I pretend that I do know. It looks like Frank has some new music on the way and that's enough for me. I'm looking forward to it, whatever it is. |

Here’s another pixies theory after watching the brilliant juan valdez youtube vids of frank and kim shattuck of the MUFFS…..
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20780
THAT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING! Kim (KimV2) Shatttuck will be the new base player in Pixies2.0. Frank held a “secret” audition for Kim Shattuck in Silver Lake, CA and she’s been hired to replace Kim “what’s the Deal with not recording new Pixies material!”. Dave Lovering was quoted as saying, “I’m extremely delighted that the Pixies have scored some muff.”

Hey, I'm with ya. I don't think anything is happening anyway. Personally, I always prefer Frank solo. The Pixies are usually the last thing I go for when I'm in the mood for Frank. One of the things that make the Pixies great is that each album is very distinct. That said, those new songs sound very very very much like solo Frank rather than Pixies. As individual as the Pixies albums are, they absolutely have a common thread for the actual songwriting regardless of the production or instrumentation that for the most part never carried through to the solo and Catholics stuff. To me.
I'll take new Pixies in any form, really doesn't matter. I just mentioned that those songs are hard to buy as new Pixies material. If they are, sweet. But they probably aren't anyway. Of course, THAT ONLY MEANS ONE THING!

I actually thought about this too! I really wouldn't mind to be honest. I like Kim Deal but she's being lame with not wanting to "taint the Pixies legacy" with new material. She doesn't seem to care about tainting the Breeders legacy with boring sound-alike songs on their last 2 albums. If these songs we've heard online are indeed new Pixies they're already better than anything on Title TK or Mountain Battles AND better than most solo Frank IMHO. Kim Shattuck seems is a good bass player and singer and seems to actually have fun playing with Charles. If Kim Deal left the Pixies all that would change is that they shouldn't play Gigantic and Silver anymore.

As you've pointed out, she doesn't have any problems fucking with the Breeders "legacy". Part of it is fight over control, part of it just plain ol' spite.
Since the Pixies reunited for the money-grab tour, Charles has hinted that "others" want a change in the band's business arrangements, and that's what is holding up new Pixies. I'm gonna guess that Kim want's a bigger cut, in addition to more artistic control, and recognition. You know that Charles is not going to agree to any kind of co-captain arrangement as concerns the Pixies.
I believe the rest has to do with spite. Charles shut down the Pixies without even talking to Kim. The few times she tried to contact him he blew her off. You know what they say about a woman scorned?
Maybe it's just as well. Have a look at the videos from the recent Breeders shows to see what I mean. Yeah, I know, the Breeders were always sloppy, but back in the day it was kind of endearing. They were young, cute goofy chicks, it was fun to watch. They're even more sloppy now...Kelley's guitar playing is even worse than it was, Kim's voice is shot. They've gone from being hipster chicks to being the embarrassing spinster aunts no one in the family wants to talk about.
Charles and the rest of them made a pretty good pile on the filthy lucre tour, if they are careful, it's enough to carry them through the rest of their days. Maybe it's time for Charles to look into a new career.....movies, setting up a space camp for kids.....building low income housing.....there are all kinds of possibilities. |

So are all women in America called Kim then? I have a cousin called Kim who lives in Florida.
Her voice is not really like Kim Deal's, but anyway if Deal don't want to do it what can you do, I like the sound of this Classic Masher.
And Jarvis Cocker is also a member of The Muffs?

Kim was in Wales with the other Pixies so one can only assume she is on any new album.
Black Francis has registered nearly 20 new songs on his Rice and Beans publishing which is where he keeps his Pixies catalogue.
It could be possible that the Pixies compromise and tour with another bass player (they did that benefit show a while back with Flea and others filling in on bass), but I doubt they will as they haven't announced any new dates that would clash with the Breeders reunion.
Unless they get Kim from the Muffs or Franks wife to play bass for the Pixies, I reckon any new album and tour will be in 2014.

With the Breeders reunion only doing Pod, Safari, Last Splash era music (i.e. their golden period before the Breeders turned into Kim Deal solo albums and The Amps) and Kim only releasing new material as a solo artist I can't imagine the Pixies not dropping the already recorded album and touring in 2014. Once the Last Splash nostalgia tour is over she can make a decent living off Pixies. By the time Kim gets a new Breeders album together it will be 2018 and she'll be doing a small club tour to promote it so will hardly be rolling in the cash. |

Well, sarcasm aside, it does look more like a pub in Wales than anywhere in America, but then Iive only ever been to pubs in Florida, and seen them on TV. I also looks like a Welsh dog, it's probably called Taff or Gwyneth or something. |

Who's on the jukebox? The Jukebox is British, NSM. http://www.nsmmusic.com/
And I think the sticker beside the coin slot is saying it is supplied by GEM Automatics, Port Talbot?
I was able to find on Google Maps the market where FB & Joey took that picture. I wonder where this bar is? |

It looks like a small local hotel bar to me. Go look it up on Google and have fun trying to find out which one, it probably isn't that hard to do if it really is in Wales. Lucky the staff who worked in that hotel that time. They were probably all Polish and had never heard of the Pixies before, which is possibly why they chose this particular hotel, the sneaky bastards.
This is how famous people operate. I once met Alex Kingston in a hotel bar in New Abbey in SW Scotland. I left my bike bag outside because I knew it probably wouldn't get stolen + there was nothing in it worth stealing anyway. She sat in the corner all night with the director of the Scottish drama she was currently filming in Wanlockhead (Scottish wales) while me and my mate, who had just walked to the top of Criffel sat and got drunk. At the end of the evening she found my bag outside and brought it in asking if anyone knew who's it was. I instantly recognised it as mine and took it from her, thanking her and she smiled at me sweetly, and I had no idea at the time who she was until months later. Same possible story about Mike Fleetwood in Great Malvern in 2004. It wasn't a hotel but a local alternative place where you could kind of smoke something other than tobacco if you were discrete about, and I sat down at a table drunk talking to a slightly older couple. I'm not 100% sure but I know for a fact he lived there at the time, but I think this it was him, I didn't really talk much to him but had a really interesting chat with his wife at the time and then left not realising. I also had a beer with Dr Karl from Neighbours there, but I knew who he was at the time.
Anyway, there's another thread category if I ever saw one. |

I have no opinion on the above matter, but I think it'd be cool as hell if Frank and Kim Shattuck recorded something together. They're both among my very favorites. I love those old Muffs records more and more as I get older. They've held up great.
Kim Shattuck also recorded the first Frank Black solo song cover that I know of. Her side project band The Beards recorded "Thallasocracy" for their one album about ten years ago. |

Interesting interview with Charles. A couple of interesting nuggets
http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/198880/interview-black-francis/
All right so you’re not promoting anything but you’ve typically always got something up your sleeve. What have you been up to lately recording-wise? Your last record was a collaboration with Reid Paley. Have you made a follow-up? -No but we are working on one. I can’t say what it is right now but I made another record last Fall.
What do you mean you can’t say what it is? -I mean it isn’t a record. I don’t know what it is yet, I mean the whole format is breaking down which is kind of cool
Once in a VH1 Classic interview you described how you would like to make a new Pixies record where you would hire a producer to drag you through their own vision as opposed to trying to replicate the magic of “Surfer Rosa” or “Doolittle.” Was that ever discussed with your band mates and did the record ever get as far as that? -Lots of things have been discussed with the band yeah and I mean if we were to ever do that that, my manager or publicist would be the first to let you know but they all get pissed off if I talk about that shit.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Some In Rainbows type of release could also be a possibility, or maybe an EP?
It would take some of the pressure off to release a song or two, gauge the reaction before coming out with anything else.

Assuming that the Rice and Beans list of new songs are Pixies songs, it means that 22 new tracks are in the can. Maybe they'll release 11 vinyl singles and collect them all on an album at the end, or release one new song a month for the next never ending Doolittle style 2+ year tour, or non-album singles followed by an album all on vinyl, or two concise rock n roll records. Either way, I'll get them all. |

I always felt they should've started off with an EP when they were first talking about recording again a couple years back. They should've started with an EP of cover songs to spice up their live set with. Pixies covers always have their own unique stamp and they're pretty good at choosing somewhat obscure songs so it would've been like getting new Pixies songs without them having to write them. Then, they could've started recording new original material. Seems like they've always been about easing back into it and this would've been a good way.

They did do some recordings in 2004, Bam Thwok and that cover song and at least one more unreleased song. They weren't the well oiled machine that they are now, so I reckon with 22 songs in the can 5 or 6 will appeal to even the most hardened Pixies fan (there's already links to 5 of them here, so at least the song writing is good). |

Even if they do this, I hope they decide to release a selection of songs as single coherent album. They're a classic album band after all... would kind of ruin the magic if they just went for this approach. |
