According to Wikipedia, Pixies might record in 2010 a new LP, the first since 1991 and the great "Trompe Le Monde". I'd like to know the opinion of fans about this idea. To me, it's clearly "NO!"
In my opinion, Pixies discography is perfect and I don't want a new record to spoil this. |

I'd like not a new album, but a fifth album. If they make a new album it'll probably be cack, like the new DEVO album is. |

Yes i would like them to make more music together.
It is unlikely that the output will be another Doolittle but that group of people have always created great music together. To me, Ain't that pretty at all, and Bam Thwok were definetley worth recording.
I don't understand this fear of tarnishing their history, nothing can tarnish their history. The Pixies at their peak were a fireball of creativity and we have the records for life.
I just enjoy hearing this group work together. Listen to the Shel Silverstein tribute of Cover of the Rolling Stone. Thats just Joey and FB and it has an electric quality to it.
So the answer is yes,new record please. |

Yes I would like them to make more music together also. Anything is better than nothing.
I agree with Sam, they will not "tarnish their history", regaurdless of what they produce.
I would also like to see the Pixies cover, Frank Black, The Breeders, The Amps, and the The Martinis. Not so sure about The Everybody. That would be a good idea for b-sides.
An album of covers may cause less artistic differences, and could be prety good. For example Boom Chickaboom, I Can't Forget, Ain't That Pretty At All, Winterlong, Been All Around The World, Paranoid.

Frank and Kim still make great albums, so why wouldn't a new Pixies album also be great? |

They've been back together for about as long as they ever were together originally, they seem to be reasonably comfortable with each other... so why not?
Frank is unfortunate in that his Black Francis output is constantly lumped in with the "HE WAS IN THE PIXIES, THIS IS LIKE THE PIXIES, IT'S ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE PIXIES" stuff. Maybe if they do record some stuff together - not trying to rewrite the old songs, but writing songs as the people they are now - then it will shut some people up. |

Do you really think they are that comfortable with each other? Do you think they can record another album together? I kind of doubt that.
I think recording a new album and releasing it as a Pixies album might be just another step in milking it. And if it's not good, or if they didn't really record it together, that would be one step too far for me. I'm happy with all the Pixies-related output there is today. It doesn't need the Pixies label.
If I am wrong however, and they can still do it, then please, be my guest.
it's educational |

Maybe they could take it in baby-steps, Kim and Frank guesting on each other's albums, something like that.
I'm not especially bothered about it being the Pixies name, I just think that these are four very good musicians and it'll be a shame if they don't have a go at something new sometime. |

I don't think they should reform as the Pixies. The Pixies is something they did in their early twenties. They should reform as a new band that reflects who they are now. It would be better for them and better for us. It would give any new material it's own space to breathe and 'the legacy' could remain protected. They'd still get a lot of press because they'd still be the Pixies. Best of both worlds see. Also the name change would be a PR coup, get people talking. Sound familiar?
Joey needs to pick up that dictionary again.

The Lapsed Catholics
Right, privilege or agreement that becomes invalid because it is not used, claimed or renewed. 'Lapsed' seems apt to Pixies.

I really don't understand people saying that they don't want a new album and it could "spoil" something.
If they made another album and you didn't like it and it somehow spoils the music you loved, there's something wrong with you. If another album doesn't "live up" to your expectations and somehow lowers the band in your view, fuck you. You have issues.
If you don't want to hear a new album and think it might spoil something for you, don't listen to it. Pretend it doesn't exist.
This argument is as ridiculous as people saying they don't want another Indiana Jones movie. Don't go see the damn thing. It's easy. |

They should do an album for the fans. I've paid to see them three times on their reunion tour and each time the set list has been nearly identical, and Bossonova and Trompe are pretty much ignored. It would be fine to work new songs into the set and breath life into the set, then they can keep the never-ending reunion tour going. Frank and Joey are gonna need money for their kids college funds and Kim is gonna need some cash to do more Breeders stuff, so keeping the Pixies going forever will be best for both the band and the fans! In the age of iTunes they could just drop a new song whenever they feel like recording rather than pressure themselves to come up with 15 new killer tracks. |

What i don't see is why the Pixies would like a new album? Never mind the fans!
So, in general, and its on record, Pixies reunited primarily for financial gain. We, the fans, largely don't begrudge them this because 1) We feel they deserve it, they missed out on this financial success the first time round and 2) Well, we are bit selfish ourselves, we just want to see our favourite band live - so we're quite happy to overlook an non-art motivations for the reformation. It works for them, works for us - but it was/is about the money. Sure, they may have had some initial pleasure playing together - everyone loves a bit of nostalgia - BUT, it is about the money!
SO.... why would Pixes want a new album? How many people are actually going to pay for an album? Very little! Album sales are nothing like the late 80's/early 90's - albums are ripped and sent around the internet in seconds! Most bands make their money from touring these days. True fans might want to hear a new album live, but the majority of gig goers just want to hear 'Debaser'. The Pixies already provide this, without recording a new album.
So, i don't see the gain. Record an album? Why? To make money from album sales? Not a chance! So they can tour? Not a chance! They can do this without a new album, and as mentioned, the majority of people want to hear 'Debaser' and 'Break my body'.
For money making, which is their primary function at the moment, their current model suits them well - release live albums / DVDs and collector item stuff - this sells physical units, and hence money - and no new recording is necessary. No tiresome songwriting required!
So... thats my answer to calls for opinions on a new album.... why would Pixies want to record a new album?!! Plus EVEN if they were thinking of it (for whatever reason), personally i feel that moment has passed. It needed it to be done on the cusp of the initial reunion euphoria, not years after!
That's my $0.02. |

Unfortunately you're probably right chineselover. In creative terms, I don't think they're functioning as a 'real' band.
It's a shame, though. Their version of All Around The World - in essence, a Frank Black solo song - is beautiful. I'm certain that if a new tour similarly integrated re-workings of Frank songs, Breeders songs, even certain stuff from The Everybody, then it'd go down fantastically.

More people would pay for a new PIXIES album than a new Black Francis, Breeders, or Martini's album.
And judging by the quality of the last 3 years worth of Frank's solo stuff, a new PIXIES album is more than welcome.

They should release more one off tracks, like Bam Thwok, sporadically. This would sate fan demand and enable them to keep touring the back catalogue. |

I like the idea of the pixies just releasing singles, like one or two a year.
or changing their name to vomit squad and releasing a diy album with no album label.

I hope it happens and if it does I think it'll come out of nowhere when least expected. If nothing else a new Pixies album would be a big media event resulting in much greater exposure for FBF's music. Maybe. |

The new Devo is decent: it just depends what devo you prefer: the punky Q: Are We Not Men DEVO or the new wave Whip it Devo...
It's not another "Q: Are We Not Men" but it's fun new wave. Take it for what it is :) |
