Let's just get the boys back home to their pamepring and mansions and golf clubs and xBox controllers, back in the comfort of the bubble that is the Premiership where they can pretend to be world class against each other. Heh.

Got beaten by and drew with better teams. What can you say? We are crap!

Pass me the pepper, tro.

I don't know what else there is to say. All that's left I guess is some words of comfort from Denis.

Goal line technology only looks at whether the ball has crossed the line doesn't it?. Those close calls don't come along often.

It doesn't look at incorrect offside decisions so wouldn't have made a difference in the Arg/Mex match.

But anyway, you're right. Something needs to be done.

I actually mixed up two points that I was making there. When I said goal line technology I really just meant the use of technology at all. Like a close offside decision. It would be so simple to see a replay. 10 seconds. Done.
Use an appeals system. 3 chances per game for each team to have a video ref (like in rugby league) review a vital decision?

The spanish are the worst-looking team of the World Cup, right after Greece and Argentina. If I were in the opposing team I'd probably spend the 90 minutes trying to punch them in the face for looking that idiotic.

Managed to get tickets to Saturday's Germany - Argentina match in Cape Town. Excited about experiencing a match in Green Point Stadium. It will be a mad week-end as Friday night we're going to the Ghana - Uruguay match as well. As Kelladwella says, got to make most of the opportunity. Fortunately match tickets are fairly priced for South Africans.

So far Chile-Spain had been the best match to attend. USA - Ghana and Italy - Slovakia was excellent too. Japan - Paraguay was disappointing.

hmmm, I'd now like Germany or Argentina to win - I have a feeling that Argentina are somehow fated to win (although, clearly as a rational, non-mumbo jumbo human being I don't believe in such things ;-) ) - there's just something about them and Maradona that screams World Cup winners 2010.

If I was to bet at this point I would say Spain, since there seems to be 5 top class teams left and Spain is the only one of them to not be playing another in the quarters.

So, I'm guessing Brazil vs. Spain in the finals.

Anyone else online and watching Ghana/Uruguay? Amazing last few minutes! I'm saying Uruguay. That handball on the line might turn out to be the greatest defensive split second decision ever. For Uruguay.

Didn't see the first game but Uruguay-Ghana was fantastic. I didn't really want anyone to lose (though I'd placed my bet on Uruguay).

I missed the Dutch game, too. Made me smile to hear Brazil got knocked out. Shocked for some reason, but Holland have always had the potential.

I remember taking penalties in 5-a-sides tournaments when I was younger. I remember being shit scared.

Did you have the 2 step rule when taking penalties in 5 a side, fbc? Didn't work out too well for Ghana! Where was the run-up!?
I've seen a lot of criticism for the handball but I'm sure any player would have done it!

Sometimes. I was talking about when I was 11/12. I don't think it was 2 steps, but no one ran from the halfway line. Dozens of pitches next to each other. My brother walked past behind the goals of 2 games and got smacked in the face by a ball. He dropped his ice cream. Funny stuff when you're 12.

It's one of them. If the resulting penalty goes in, he's an idiot. If the penalty's missed, and then his team go on to win, he's a genius. I think he's the latter.

He had nothing to lose. That ball goes in, and it's game over; he stops it, and they have, what, a 20% chance of winning?

20% is actually high, come to think of it.

I don't know the actual percentage of PKs that go in, but let's say it's 90%. So Ghana had a 90% chance of winning on that PK, and then if they missed that, they had a 50% chance of winning on the 5-a-side PKs. And that means Uruguay had a 10% chance of surviving the PK, and 50% chance of surviving the 5-a-sides. Ergo, Uruguay had a 5% chance of winning that game if the guy slaps the ball with his hand; and a 0% chance of winning if he doesn't.

heh. I don't know the stat '% of penalties scored', but I say if the penalty goes in, Uruguay lose. If the penalty is missed, Uruguay continue to fight for the victory. 50-50? You don't need stats where penalty shoot outs are concerned coming from England. It's 100% England out. Guaranteed. [ed: i've just realised that's a stat]

What's a PK?

I can only remember taking one real penalty kick. Senior year my coach threw me a bone and let me take a kick. I made it. Now I can scoff at anyone that misses one. Chokers.

You played soccer in high school? I thought it was a girl sport over there (based on what your national team looked like)

I like Suarez a lot, and I loved what he did, but having him in my fantasy league was a really bad idea.

I took two penalties in school matches. The first I mis-hit and accidentally lobbed the keeper (we were nine yrs old). The second was against the same team (different match), and this time I deliberately tried to lob the keeper (what was I thinking?) and put it over the bar. Totally gutted.

Suarez did what he had to do, his reaction after Ghana missed was fantastic. I think, under that sort of pressure, maybe only 60-70% of penalties would be scored. Unless they were all German.

I would have thought that given the many times we've beaten Mexico you would know better.

I played soccer the last two years of high school.

Sorry, I based myself on our last encounter, in last year's Gold Cup, when Mexico beat your ass 5-0.

Does anybody know why some shirts have these black stripe things around them and others don't? It looks like a support of some kind.

As a neutral, I wanted it to go to penalties but go Spain. Europe bites back.
