Agreed on all points.

TOTY TOUR 2014!

I remember sitting in a basement listening to Fields of Marigold until I passed out.

toty. Better than anything Pixies ever did.

That would be a great concert, with Lyle Workman, EDF and the rest of the crew.

Not that I don't love Doolittle. Although I do not think I will be able to catch this tour. I wish they were doing Montreal.

I'll go with that too. Doolittle is the album that changed everything for me, although TOTY is incredible and a tour would be heady!

Since Doolittle is my least favorite Pixies album, I would rank Teenager above it.

I've probably listened to TOTY a thousand times more than Doolittle. I've had the cassette version in my car since release and the CD version is in the mini-van. I vote for a TOTY 20th tour in 2014 but before that I vote for a 10th anniversary tour with FB&theC's for 'Dog in the Sand' in 2011.

Listening to 'Doolittle' a lot more recently, for obvious reasons (and weirdly, it's the Pixies album that made the least impression on me).

'Teenager' never gets old. Would have been amazing sessions to sit in on. It's hard to believe that most the lyrics were, allegedly, written after all the band tracks had been recorded.

so far TOTY is leading 6 votes to 2 (i couldn't determine ziggy's vote- seems like he may be on the fence right now.)

based on this preliminary poll a 2014 TOTY 20th year anniversary tour would do very well at the ticket booth

I vote Doolittle.

No contest.

By the way, what's a 'sleeper album'?

sleeper album wasn't the phrase i was looking for...more like a hidden gem...or a great album missed by the general population....i'm curious to what the album sales are of toty vs doolittle or surfer rosa....and it's perplexing that i have run into so many pixies fans over the years that have not listened to toty.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeper_hit

Some sleeper hits achieve unexpected success at the box office immediately upon their initial theatrical release, but this is not typical. Because these films are not expected to do particularly well they often receive little promotion or advertising and take time to register with the public. Typically the sleeper hit relies instead on positive "word of mouth" as well as the publicity generated by awards and good reviews.

Thus sleeper films often attract the most viewers in the latter part of their theatrical releases. There's Something About Mary had a small release, but gained notoriety through word of mouth, and grew to top the weekend box office on its 8th week of release. Studios have become more adept at promoting sleeper success at the box office, gradually increasing the number of screens and amount of advertising devoted to a promising film over several weeks (as opposed to a traditional pre-release advertising blitz). This strategy was used to great success by the promoters of Little Miss Sunshine and Brokeback Mountain.[citation needed] Some sleeper hits fail completely at the box office but succeed later on video as cult films (such as The Shawshank Redemption) through positive word of mouth reviews communicated between fans in particular social networks or demographics.

Teenager of the Year is the Chuck Norris of Frank's albums. Teenager of the Year could beat up Doolittle any day, even in Doolittle's home stadium.

..i did some research..

for doolittle from wiki....At the end of 2005, best estimates put total sales in America at between 800,000 and one million copies. certified gold in 1995.

couldn't find much on toty...

at cduniverse they have toty at 13,978 in all time sales rank. doolittle is at 3,024.

the best is checking out the online reviews from the various websites....

"Frank Black is a prolific songwriting genius. His solo career has been woefully underated but this album surpasses anything done in his Pixies era. TOTY is a blend of subtle perfection and balls out rock. 22 songs, some hook you immediately, some are growers, none are fillers. Unlike anything I've heard before or since, this is my favorite album of all time.
Submitted by Rudebody (Bradford, West Yorkshire, U.K.)"

"Much more on the pop side of AlternativeRock than anything from the Pixies. I really think that Frank Black's best achievements in songwriting can be found on this record. ImSoGreen "

"oooohhhh BOOO FUCKING HOOOOOOO!!ByrnePotter "

"Frank Black's sophmore solo album. It's great. One of my favorie rock albums of all time.
You should buy it.
By Vandarren"

"I'm gutted that I missed this one first time around - 22 really strong tracks with many highlights including; 'Whatever Happened To Pong?', 'Speedy Marie' and 'Big Red'. This album really successfully showcases the extreme talent of one Frank Black! Key Track: Speedy Marie. corkie "

"This is surely Black's finest moment. Man, what a great songwriter he was! 22 tracks, and you'll have a hard time spotting the filler (it is there, look carefully). Most today's records are loaded with filler within only 10 or 12 tracks."

"Teenager" is a real achievement. Black was at a creative peak. Everything sounds fresh, urgent and alive, cut to the bone, nothing sounds overdone or excessive."
"Nice bath robe, Frank. ;) Ackibear "

"Rarely is an artist so willing to 'look like' he has absolutely no friends whatsoever. This album is an emotional journey for dreadfully uncool people. It may not 'refer' to confidence in aloneness, but it certainly 'shows' how it's done. The cover/title is a play on that idea, and shows the unique under-handed wit that he applies it with.Deep-seeded humour is Black's calling card. The music itself, is lazily performed. As with Bob Dylan, the lyrics and composition are the main point, not so much the technical performance. The songs are all short. Some are rugged distortion-guitar based, some are keyboard effected. It's still all within 'indie' style.I dis-agree with some reviewers that they're all gems, but they are all very interesting, given Black's presence at the micro-phone.
The Pixies have an artistic legacy in music history.Frank Black himself, has an 'emotional content' legacy in music history. By Ulven "

As one who never quite understood the hype around the Pixies, I can say that this record easily beats any Pixies record. This is real quality pop music, done with guts and creativity."

"Alright, first if you are a pixies fan you've definitely got to stop waiting - you will be hooked and thanking me for it to Frank Black if you liked the pixies sound.
Second, even for those who aren't familar with the pixies this is definitely worth listening to. It's pop in one sense, but so radical in another. It moves from punk to reggae to good ol' basic rock in single songs. The lyrics are clever, ridiculous, and absurd. So many styles but all are hit on the nail. Its inconsistency is what makes it great. If you are the type of person who wants to hear new and exciting things - this is definitely the album and make sure to check out his others as well. Why is this so underground?, Dec 23 2003

Teenager's the giant that most ran from I guess. Though there was more to love. Doolittle was a bolt. Came without warning, rooted you to the spot. A little unfair to set them against each other like this. Of course the giant has our sympathies. How to choose when I want them both with me when I ride into town.

Electric crackle from the Doolittle shows still lives in my hair. There I said it.

Are you guys insane?????

Doolittle shits all over anything Black has done since the Pixies split.

TOTY is a great album though now doubt, but Doolittle is one of the classic albums of all time! ... along with Surfer Rosa and Bossanova of course.

A) I'm not your mate.
B) If someone physically shit on all of your belongings, you'd consider it trashing. Just like saying that something metaphorically shits all over something, that's trashing.
C) You did accuse me of lying.

I'm all for expressing yourself - just don't make outrageous claims and then try and back off of them every time someone calls you on your shit.

Pixiesmusic.com has a great message board.

Already there, mate. And by the way, that's just a figure of speech.

I love Frank Black's solo music. That's why I am here.

Saying something 'shits all over' something else is also a figure of speech and does not necessarily imply that the 'something else' is 'shit', simply that that the 'something' is so awesome that nothing else can touch it in terms of greatness. You have taken my words and twisted them to mean something unintended, and used it as an excuse to attack me. Not only that but I tried to defend my position there by explaining what I meant, and you still wont have it.

(c) I did not accuse you of lying, or anyone of lying. I said I didn't buy it. That's not in any way tantamount to accusing someone of lying, because in the event that someone is wrong about something it generally happens as a result of one of either of two things. They are either lying about it and purposely trying to deceive you, or they simply got it wrong or got passed the wrong information.

I have put up with various insults and accusations from certain people over the time I have spent here, and I've brushed them all off mostly and tried to be friendly, and interesting and helpful, but perhaps it is time to move on.

Oh okay then I'll stay, but only for the dramaz!

And only if Brian admits that he's a douche bag, and I still feel this high tomorrow when I wake up with a groggy head from this slightly crappy bottle of red wine I ended up drinking all of.

Actually, I'm just listening to the yellow album and I even think I like that one better than TOTY. I don't really understand why TOTY is so highly regarded as it is. I like it, but like most of Black's solo/Catholics albums for me they always have a few weak tracks, songs that wear off after a few listens, you know.
