To stem the tide of hate and judgey-pants-ness, let me chime in and say that I love the cover. And I too am a photo editor.
I think the winter is going to be a real whirligig |

There is no way its worse than the cover of Frank Black and the Catholics. I agree with this "The cover suggests the songs on the album are average/forgettable/disposable IMO." Still, that probably won't be the case. Frank Black really hasnt ever had good solo covers since leaving 4AD, apart from (in my opinion) Honeycomb and Fast Man Raider Man. Maybe Dog in the Sand and Bluefinger. Yet, the music has been good, so hopefully it's not indicator. This has made me feel much worse about the album if its true: "I won't lie to you: I've heard the whole album and NSE is probably the most upbeat song of all. The rest is mostly ambient type stuff.

an ambient crafted version of Rabbits could be cool, but i can't see that working for Dead Man's Curve... im sure there will be some loud songs on here |

There was a picture on EDF's blog showing the Man wielding an SG... which bodes rather well.
That said, the title track has grown on me in the last day, an awful lot! |

BF's NSE statement. Worth a comment or two?
When I was a boy the plant we boys called a fern was code for vagina, and to this day I love fern plants. In my heart the vagina is almost everything, and almost everything else could be summed up in what cock and seed have to offer; and everything else? The love of the father, dead or alive, the pain of too much pleasure, till death do us part, the voice of another song man from the other side, with or without God, Teri and the Possibilities, where ever you may be, the smell of sex in the air, seduced, slain, on my knees in prayer, sucking at the only thing that matters, my own personal Meret Oppenheim, I am Man Ray and I want you and to be all the way inside you, the cameras whirring as we put some elbow grease into the scene, the audience watching us in the dark

To me, there's more inspiration and talent in that paragraph than in a lot of people's entire music careers.

Seems like he's referencing every song on the album in some way. |

Don't understand it all really, but I must say I do share his passion for vaginas. |

I knew I should've resisted commenting on NSE (the song)earlier. With some time I think its a very pretty song with some nice production, and I think it'll make a good late album ballad. I think i was expecting something more rockin and catchy, but I remembered that this isn't the single, but just an early taste. |

Any song ca be ambiant. Imagine Dead Man's Curve played by Cocteau Twins and you got it. I kinda like that new song, but it could almost be on FMRM. I dont care if it is loud or not but I expect some new taste. |

"Can you hear me? I aint got shit to say." [/quote]Yes artwork is horrible. The sort of pictures to accompany some non-descript magazine article. But for an album cover???
Worst album cover yet. (I'm a picture editor for what it's worth)

Perhaps dullness is the point? Even within the most banal of environments and beneath the average facade of most people lives a highly charged, erotic fantasyland of the mind? |

I'm getting a tiny bit worried now. I just listened to the original version of 'wheels' and... well, that song kind of sucks. Generic and bland country music to these admittedly inexperienced ears. That would be fine, except i think i must be the only person around these parts who isn't blown away by Dead mans curve or Rabbits.I still hope and expect this album to be great, but i guess the long wait for Der Golem is getting me tetchy. Life has been tough for a Frank Black fan of late, i sincerly hope that at least one of these 2 new albums kicks ass. |

I personally love the song Wheels, i downloaded the album after i heard about the cover and i really like it. As far as country goes, the album is considered innovative and exciting comparedto the generic and bland sounds of nashville. Then again, I like real country music. |

On reflection after a half decent nights sleep i was probably a tad harsh on Wheels. With a couple more listens i'll probably end up quite liking it i imagine... although country music generally will never be my favourite form of music, despite being more open to it than i used to be. I just find it a bit twee at times i guess, a lot of it sounds the same. Also, earlier in the week i was once again blown away by sitting in front of my speakers blasting out Dog in the Sand on full volume for the first time in maybe six months. A combination of Bluefinger and Dog in the sand, or a return to the quirky pop of Franks early solo output would be what i was hoping for with NSE and i guess last night for the first time i feared a Fastman Raiderman 2. (I don't hate FMRM, bit it's hardly a classic.) But i know i should really be more optimistic and trust in the man, because to be Frank, he seldom does not deliver awesome material. |

About BF covering weals... Maybe if I were american I could understrand why american strange bands want to go classic after a while. It's like when Crosby left the Byrds and they began to play with Parson. You just think "If they wanted to do some obvious sing-along why have they done all those strange byrds records before?" Same story for the Kinks Musewell Hillbilies. Then you have the talking heads country pop stuff. The velvet's pop stuff. Beefheart's slow funky soul crooner seventies stuff. etc... Actually I like most of that stuff (apart from beefheart's, wich is really a lower level than his noisy stuff). I dont know, maybe from the start Lou Reed just wanted to make some fine pop songs, David Byrne wanted to sound normal, Ray Davies didnt want to sing with a duck voice? |

I think its like frank said - when you're young you want to break all the rules, and when you're older you want to write some perfect songs. Its a transition from punk, to being a respected songwriter which is basically what most north american songwriters want - to be in the league of other songwriters (which north america values really highly) like bob dylan, neil young, leonard cohen ect. |

A more cynical viewpoint would be that some of these artists run out of anything fresh and original to say and resort to mimicking previous artists work. It's strange in a way as nine times out of ten the artists previous work will be far more critically lauded that when they rid themselves of the elements that made their work individual in the first place. I should probably add that this is by no means an attack on BF just a general statement! |

Is "Rabbits" the one that has often been called "The Rabbit Song" in these parts?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Come on... Have you ever listened to the original versions of Handyman, Duke of Earl, The Big Hurt, 666, Cecilia Ann? NARC? You know Frank has the habit of making gems out of crappy songs.

Reed was born in the US, Byrne moved to the uS when he was 8, and Davies may have lived in New Orleans for little while. |

I think this was mentioned another time, but it could also be the sipmle desire to do something new, in this case, what's novel for Frank is embracing more traditional song-writing. Honeycomb and Fasterman seem like the culmination of this approach. These also happen to be the albums I thus far have enjoyed the least out of his entire discography. It seems Frank does whatever he feels like, which I respect even when I'm dissatisfied with the end result.
Perhaps he'll craft something unique and bizarre post Erotik; assuming the album is traditional sounding.

Just incase people aren't checking the NonstopQuestions thread, there is a link to Wheels now. Good track, and i feel better about the title track knowing its a ballad rather than a representative of the album - because like i said earlier i think the fear was that it was a lead single type track when really it was just the first to leak |
