Yeah? Thank you to make me think to the dirtbombs, for some reason I allways fogot they exist and that's a pretty good band. This one (Corrina) makes me think more to David Bowie when he was playing with Mick Ronson. From what I've heard it seems the all album has a "prepunk" feeling. Bits of Roxy, bits of Bowie, bits of Stooges... It's like punk without the fear of being sometimes more sophisticated, bluesy, jazzy or even a bit kitsch. After all punk can be dictatorship of good taste because it rejects allmost everything. Somebody once said the pixies couldnt roll, they could just rock. That's why they're generally considered as good taste in the "albini generation". |

mick collins is my second favorite person behind charles.
i was just listening to "When i go down on you" and it reminded me of "i would do anytihng for love" by meatloaf. not much but a little. and btw, i hate when people compare my songs to other bands. so please forgive. i'll be listening to the album all day today.
i tohught there would be more nse pots.
i mean "posts".

When I Go Down On You reminds me of The Clash. Sandinista/Combat Rock era. Can't find which song though. Am I the only one in thinking this?
Joe, I do hear the Dirtbombs in Corrina too, you're right. Maybe Your Love Belongs Under A Rock?

http://www.spinnermusic.co.uk/2010/03/30/black-francis-oral-sex-nonstoperotik-grand-duchy-kids/
Black Francis Wants Son to Appreciate Oral Sex Song From 'NonStopErotik'
The concepts of love and intimacy are prevalent throughout Black Francis' sexually-charged new solo album, 'NonStopErotik.' Even the gentle, piano-based title track would make a sweet, tender love song, if you can get past its repeated "I want to be inside of you" refrain. But, as Francis tells Spinner, all that romance has nothing to do with Grand Duchy, his collaboration with wife Violet Clark.
"The songs that get sexual when I'm writing with her are really just super-base and super-sexual, not that romantic -- just some nasty s---, you know?" he says. "It doesn't come from that. With my experience with her, the relationship does affect the music but not in the ways that you think it would. We try to be pretty true to rock 'n' roll and not driven into this lovey-dovey diary thing."
So, after working on music with the mother of three of his children, does he have to make it a point to stay away from the saccharine lyrics? "No, that isn't really my nature," he says. "Not that I've never written a love song, but if the song dictates love, fine, that's where I go. I'm not precious about it."
Francis says the same goes for writing about his children. "People ask me, 'So, what's your music like now that you've got kids?' and it's like 'I didn't write a song about my precious little baby boy,'" he says. "I'm too offended by that kind of preciousness, so I just can't go there. I'd rather be cool."
He's also not worried about having his kids grow up to hear their dad sing a song like 'When I Go Down on You,' a song from the album that's as literal as the title suggests.
"I'd rather write some nasty song about oral sex so that one day when my son grows up to be older and he understands what the song is about, he'll think it's a cool song, not some sort of lullaby or whatever," Francis says. "I don't want to do children's music. I write kids songs, but the kids songs I write are for my kids -- like when I'm putting them to bed. We sing some song that we made up but I don't want to make a record like that.

I disagree that there are no real standouts - I think Dead Man's Curve definately is, but we're just so used to it that we forget it. I'd also consider Six Legged Man and Cinema Star as standouts.

Hey I like that Spinner interview. Although BF seems to have forgotten that "Violet" lovey-dovey song... :)
Everyone's raving about Cinema Star. It's actually not my favorite song off the album, but indeed I'm stunned by that wonderful guitar/keybords end solo. We hadn't had such an epic guitar solo since the Catholics' heyday.

'Cinema Star' and 'Corrina' are great, and 'Dead's Man Curve' is finally done justice with this version.
Bit surprised by the mix though. I'm not really placed to criticise from that point of view, but it sounds really muddy and indistinct. And some of the vocals sound a bit rough too.

I think the dirtbombs song i'm thinking of that corina sounds like is "here comes that sound again" from the album "if you don't already have a look" the second best album no one has ever heard. (behind "teenager of the year" of course. of course.

Can't put my finger on precisely why this is the case, but count me among those ambivalent (at this point) about Lake of Sin. It kind of falls flat after that awesome intro. And I'm not wild about the vocals, in line with some others who've mentioned the "Lake of See-unn". On the other hand, I'd wager this one will sound great live.
Sorry about this minor bitching. To be clear, the rest of the album is making me immensely happy. And just by virtue of being the leadoff track -- since I'm listening to the whole album over and over -- I'm going to pound Lake of Sin into my subconscious... that should help me come to peace with it. |

So it's a matter of opinion then, eh, FITZ?
As an aside, speaking of matters of opinion, my interest is piqued about whether your band is in fact the worst in Portland. If I could make sense of the show schedule on your myspace page I might come and see you guys sometime. |

Thanks, FITZ, I'll start with the stuff on your myspace.
In other news, Jesus H. Christ, the song NSE is magnificent! Even more so in the context of the album than it was when I heard the leaked track by itself. |

Yeah, it's a beautiful track! I could quite happily never listen to 'When I Go Down On You' again though. It's not the subject matter. Just a rather weak song. |

I like When I Go Down On You.
Lake Of Sin as an opener = certainly unusual for FB, sort of like The Seus - but it is growing on me.
Cinema Star reminds me of Weezer (in a good way).

I came around to When I Go Down On You, good song. I personally like Lake of Sin, maybe its a grower. I think NSE may be the most fun frank black album to listen to in his solo catalogue.

Lovin' both 'The Golem' and 'NonStopErotik'........I just read this on Blackfrancis.net : "B-sides for NSE to include four covers, including the tunes "Grindsman", "Lost Me Love", & "Rocket USA". " Anyone have any clue where to get these? |

That's actually the song that immediately clicked with me. Instantly.
Not sure what to think about NSE. I like the production a lot and to revise an old discussion: this is a real Black Francis record. In the same vein as Bluefinger and SVN FNGRS, where Der Golem was more like FB and the C's.
This is a nice little record, but on the first listen not as focused as Bluefinger. Some of the playing and singing sounds a bit off, especially on the first track. But the production makes up for it. Hopefully Frank and EDF will keep on working together.
more later.

Yeah, I will! There are many other great songs on the record though. If we hadn't already heard 'Dead Man's Curve' so much over the last couple of years, we'd be heavily praising that one too! |

I think this record is all about the production. It's dripping with musical intelligence. Like on Wild son, the guitar/key interplay is so alive with stereo personality letting you feel what the song is about in a simple and very brilliant way.
BF/EDF, always amazing when they get together. Enlightened music.

Particularly good on 'Rabbits'. And the electric piano on 'Corrina' is wicked.
It does clearly sound like a couple of different sessions put together, though. |
