looks like a good show. nine inch nails and pixies in one weekend is a recipe for success for me personally.
a little odd to see pet shop boys on the bill - i like em, but their show might not be quite what the rest of the crowd is used to.
anyone know if it'll be a doolittle show?? |

Due to the internet and music availablility, i'm thinking the days of only liking one type of music are dying off nicely...that is of course you are Crowded House playing right before rage against the toilet in 2007 or whenever that was..wasn't too pretty.

woke up and got an email from my buddy in toronto...
"Going to a secret show in ********* (sorry can't say the location as of yet) tomorrow night (friday) ......I am guest list plus one.....get on a plane, mang!! "
i responded,
"holy shit.....i just jizzed in my pants.......i'm seriously checking flights right now...you better not be fuckin with me bitch!"
pardon my french.
so i'm looking at flights right now....may be tough one though to pull. i was supposed to look after the kids this weekend while mrs fu goes to the cottage for a wild ladies rocker party. they all dress up like various rock stars. i told her to go as frank or violet but she thinks she call pull off a solid celine dion impersonation.....

No hard feelings, i hope it was a good show! I just wish frank would've announced it, or at least given a hint on the website about it... I mean, i dont really know why he had to keep it a secret from fans such as I, it seems kind of cruel actually. There was a small, intimate Frank Black show half an hour from my house and i missed it!
If you're reading Charles, i think you should let me jam with you guys tomorrow at V-fest - it seems only fair? Or if you do a secret show sunday, lemme know!

venue was awesome! i have the setlist on my camera but don't have my camera on me now...similar setlist to the more recent shows.....ended with where is my mind then into the white....kim was having lots of fun....the best was seeing everyone's expressions (mine too!)...most could not believe this was really happening...we didn't get a confirmation that they were actually going to play until about 7:00 and then went on at 9:00...they kept it a pretty good secret....i was talking to this guy from hamilton...i said i flew in from wpg for this....he said "awesome...i drove 36 hours from hamilton to wpg for the first (ended up being the 2nd) pixies reunion tour!"

Just got back, it was a great show! My first time seeing the pixies so it was really exciting!
It wasnt a doolittle show, but that's okay because it was a shorter show and it being my first time i wanted to see the hits. They played Digging For Fire, i think i might recall that being a song people wanted them to play, or maybe they have all along and i'm nuts.

8:45 p.m. "The Pixies are legends," my editor John Williams said before a seemingly Hulk-sized
Frank Black et al. took the stage. And if they're popular for having inspired Nirvana, then
they've missed out on what the Dave Grohl-fronted Foo Fighters have excelled at for over a
decade: playing an engaging live show.
Too many of these Nineties holdovers manage to generate interest based on catalogues that
were relevant while Bill Clinton was still in office. With virtually no stage presence, the Pixies
trudged through their hits including "Where is My Mind?"
I guess they needed a paycheck. The CNE midway was more entertaining than this.

TORONTO - The 2008 Toronto Virgin
Festival will be remembered for the
infamous on-stage assault on former
Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.
The 2009 Toronto Virgin Festival - at
least Day One - might be remembered
for seats, namely lots and lots of empty
ones.
Although two other stages were
hosting acts throughout the day, the
main stage area at the Molson
Amphitheatre was met with perhaps
one-quarter to one-third capacity. And
following alternative rock trailblazers
The Pixies wrapping up a stellar 80-
minute set, Ben Harper closed the night
to a relatively small audience.
Regardless, Harper and his well-
rounded group Relentless7 delivered a
loud and blues-based rock set which included a cover of Led Zeppelin's The Immigrant Song as
well as a few softer efforts including Another Lonely Day and Skin Thin.
Yet Harper deserved a far better fate than the slowly dwindling audience before him,
especially on the bottleneck blues brilliance he displayed while seated for Why Must You
Always Dress In Black and the Southern fried rocker Number With No Name.
Supported by his three-piece band - who at times sounded like there were seven of them -
Harper also scored points with the Black Crowes-like opener Comin' Up Easy.
However, as fine a set as Harper gave, it seemed that the majority of people had come to
see The Pixies, and they definitely did not disappoint. Led by Black Francis (aka Frank Black),
the group dusted off a few deeper cuts to gel nicely with the signature warhorses that have
influenced literally hundreds of bands.
And while Black waved to the adoring audience a few times, tight, alt-rock nuggets did more
than enough talking, whether it was the crisp Head On, Gouge Away with Kim Deal's infectious
bass line leading the way or the simple but still solid Bone Machine.
Other set highlights included Ed Is Dead, the crowd-pleasing Here Comes Your Man, Wave Of
Mutilation, Vamos, Monkey Gone To Heaven and Where Is My Mind?
Not to be outdone, Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand proved they can dish out some of the best
dance-rock ditties around on the back of three albums, the latest being Tonight: Franz
Ferdinand. Fortunately this night they were on from the opening Matinee until drummer Paul
Thomson kicked over his kick drum 70 minutes later during Lucid Dreams.
Evoking the first semblance of an enthused audience and a rock concert vibe, Franz Ferdinand
kept things almost as neat and tidy as The Pixies with the still groove-riddled Take Me Out, the
punchy, angular Michael, Do You Want To and Ulysses as lead singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos
had fans waving back and forth.
Earlier in the day, after the husband and wife duo Mates Of State and local up-and-comer
Lights dazzled on her key-tar, Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear offered nothing but soft, high
harmonies over roughly 30 minutes on songs such as Knife and Two Weeks.
Elsewhere, Sloan - with singer Chris Murphy still recovering from a hit-and-run incident in
Halifax - doled out signatures like Motor City Maniacs, The Lines You Amend and Losing
California.

...At first blush, this year’s line-up looked a little uninspired, but actually turned
out to be a hell of a show with the electronic duo Thunderheist, and
throwbacks like Sloan and the Pixies providing the highlights of the day...
...7:40 – While Ben Harper was officially the closing act Saturday, it was clear
from the get-go that the real draw was the Pixies. Easily one of the most
influential bands in rock and roll history, the Boston band has been widely
credited with being the forbearers of grunge movement popularized in the
early 90s. During their sets, both Sloan and Franz Ferdinand were like giddy
school kids about the impending Pixies’ set, and man, did they ever put on a
show. It was like a greatest hits album live, with tunes like “U-Mass,” “Wave
of Mutilation” and “Where is My Mind” performed, alongside some
unexpected twists, like a cover of Neil Young’s Winterlong, in the middle of
the set. While Frank Black is a looking a bit more like Marlon Brando’s
Colonel Kurtz these days, he hasn’t lost his chops and the Pixies were
definitely a tough act to follow.

Though Pixies were only the penultimate act of the main stage, to many/most they were the real
headliners (all due respect to Ben Harper). And while I was bummed to not have been granted photo
accreditation for their set, I was still happy to sit back and take in the whole of their 90-minute set.
Some seemed disappointed that this wasn’t going to be one of the much-ballyhooed Doolittle sets,
with that album played in sequence, but there was no way they weren’t going to play all the
highlights from it along with the rest of their repertoire so whatever. It’s not like they’ve got any new
material to air out.
This was the first appearance for the Boston legends since 2005 at this same venue, and while I
missed that show I did see one of their dates at Arrow Hall on their first reunion tour back in
November 2004 and this set had very much the same feel as that one – it sounded great and felt
almost completely heartless. This isn’t necessarily a slag – it’s no secret that they got back together
for the money and they’re by no means phoning it in, they’re playing everything the customer wants
to hear and playing it really well. But if you were looking to feel some love or get a sense of
occasion from their show, you probably wouldn’t have found it. They were up there to do a job –
play some classic-ass songs to crowds who may not have had the chance to hear them before – and
do it well. In a sense, it’s preferable to those reunions where they purport to be taking care of
unfinished business or have buried all hatchets, and yet you can see them looking daggers at each
other on stage. And so another 10,000 people or so can say they heard “Head On”, “Wave Of
Mutilation” and “Gouge Away” live and Pixies can make another payment on their houses. Everybody
wins.

EYE WEEKLY - Virgin Fest Ontario '09: Day 1.
...Surprisingly, Grizzly Bear didn’t earn as big a spike in terms of audience size as you’d expect; maybe the
Pixies-loving contingent that showed up later caught their lackluster set opening for Radiohead last
summer too...
The Pixies prove that if you put your mind to it, you can cram your entire oeuvre of two-minute songs
into an 80-minute set. Well, everything but “Caribou,” sadly. Prepping for their all-Doolittle tour means
that, almost five years into their reformation, they’re in fine form. Kim Deal is all fun-loving and big
smiles while Frank Black... well, he isn’t surly at least. Surprisingly, their late-’80s alt-pop is totally fit for
a festival; even the quirk-punk double shot of “Broken Face”/”Isla De Encenata” works as full-on aural
assault. But there’s nothing quite like the late-set quartet of “Wave of Mutilation," “Monkey Gone to
Heaven," “Where is My Mind?” and “Gigantic” for the Pixies to easily prove their worth. For a band with
no new music since their illustrious hatchet-burying, it doesn’t matter that their set is about as relevant
as Bill Clinton over at BMO Field (though as far as I know, Frank Black hasn’t rescued any journalists from
dictatorial regimes lately). The Pixies, like Democratic rule in America, is a timeless endeavour. CB

scheduled like an afterthought between The Pixies and questionable headliner Ben Harper — Toronto’s

Kyle: Fans were definitely loving the Pixies. Just looking back at the crowd you could see their
hardcore following screaming out lyrics. I personally don’t know a whole lot about them but
they were very cool and very good. A lot harder than I thought they’d be.

… is a valley full, full of pioneer. We’re not just kids, to say the least. We got
ideas to us that’s dear. Like capitalist, like communist. Like lots of things

That is how it began. By the time Frank barked ‘May-bee, oh ba-by, it’s
educational,’ you could not but realise you were watching the Pixies. They
were everything I expected. And moar...
...Then the main act. Pixies! They stroll on stage with minimal fanfare but to
huge cheers, Frank Black looking like a huge bouncer – resembling the
‘Incredible Hulk’ according to one review, Kim Deal tinier than I ever realised,
Joey Santiago looking like a hardass, and David Lovering looking pretty normal
for a professional magician-drummer. Starting with U-Mass, they fit in 27
songs into a supreme set of around an hour and twenty minutes. For a band
that has had a break from touring and last released an album donkey years
ago, the overwhelming impression you get is how incredibly tight and cohesive
they are as a unit. I’m pretty sure I spent half their set grinning like an idiot.
Frank Black, as apparently is his wont, never said a word all night, but Kim
Deal’s enthusiasm was infectious, grinning throughout with the occasionally
bubbly ‘thank you’ and a detailed intro to the Neil Young cover Winterlong, part
of the Doolittle B-sides that they are brushing off for the Doolittle shows later
this summer and fall.
They proceeded to rip through a large chunk of Doolittle – I Bleed, Gouge
Away, No. 13 Baby, Crackity Jones, Hey, Dead and an awesome mid- to late-
set attack of Wave of Mutilation, an awesome Tame, Here Comes Your Man,
Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven; plenty off Surfer Rosa – Bone Machine,
Broken Face, Vamos with stellar guitarwork by Santiago, Where is My Mind?
and a wonderful Gigantic. There was also excellent representation from Come

and Ed is Dead, Dig for Fire off Bossanova, Planet of Sound, U Mass and Head
On off Trompe Le Monde. Kim Deal saw them off into the night with traditional
closer Into the White. I’m definitely missing one song but I can’t for the life of
me work out which one it is. In any case, it was an awesome set. My
particular highlights were singing along to Monkey Gone to Heaven, a furious
Tame, the Spanish double act of Isla de Encanta and Vamos, and the brilliant
last half of the show. Not that the first half was not brilliant but when you
stack in the quality of songs that came in the second half, it’s kinda amazing.
By the time Debaser came on, I think I almost died. The only disappointment
was that it finished. We most certainly were not in the mood for poor old Ben
Harper after that, though we did catch most of Rural Alberta Advantage on the
side stage. I like those guys, recommend them highly. It was a little bit of a
silly stage though. I would have had them on the main stage, earlier in the
evening.
Having paid Harper the compliment of listening to his first song, it was off and
away, to food and beer. Beer was especially required since the $11.50 price
tag on pints was frankly extortionate, especially given the fact the sole beer on
sale was Molson Canadian. Vileness. I managed to buy one beer all evening.
It didn’t really matter though. I saw the Pixies live. And they were superb. I’ll
try and upload some videos and then link them here at some stage but I’m
having difficulty getting them on youtube. When I work it out, they shall be
here.
