Anything Brix-era should get you jumping for joy. I started with Kurious Oranj.

When you've gone through the entire The Fall back catalogue and eventually gotten a bit bored with them, just pick any band from the new UK lo-fi punk scene and listen to them. They're all copying Mark E Smith and most of them are complete shit. You'll feel entirely refreshed by The Fall again after a couple of Fontaines DC tracks. #TheBlandAge

Just read through the lyrics of Kurious Oranj. And get the MES historical perspective of the working class shitkicker. You'll start to get it. Just remember MES is one happy prick.

Kurious Oranj/The Fall

They Were Curious Orange. They Were Kurious Oranj

Pained and intense, man. But they were inquiring

They rode over peasants like you, they rode over peasants like you
And their horses loved them too, and their horses loved them too

They built the world as we know it
All the systems you traverse
Rode slipshod over all dumbshits

They freed the blacks too
They built church in one day, man, Amish

Their clothes were cool
Paved way for atom bomb--didn't know
They made the Jews go to school
They sent missionary girls to Arab states
And the sun-baked men did drool

They made Hitler laugh in pain
They turned Napoleon over and didn't know
They invented birth control
They were invulnerable to cool

They were primo efficient to a man
They were Stuyvestant smoking
They were beyond Ooobenblief
They were the Reformation spring
And everybody in the world
Turned Reformation blue

They were invulnerable to cool
And everybody in the world...
And they were inquiring
They were positively deranged and they were kurious oranj

They spat on the Belgians
They were anti-Gaelic, anti-semitic, anti-Arabic
You name it, man, they were against it

Yes, It's entirely the kind of laconic humour we would expect from Mark E Smith

I've not listened to many whole albums by The Fall but kurious Orange is a known favourite. Re-mit that was out a few years ago wasn't bad I though? Some of my favourite tracks anyway:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5zav2yrC7M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3ZSXlNvAiI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0bZofM6EOU (cover of an old Northern Soul song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0I2u6DKnwI (also a cover, obvs)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m2lfk4Bm34
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIZ7AhqflYM&t=314s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpWVk3h2SA8

I guess you probably know most of them anyway..

And this Jools Holland live clip is quite fun, especially at the end. MES was well known for his drunken antic (or pretending). I heard a story one time at a gig when the band got so fed up with him that they all walked off the stage and left him (and were genuinely hacked off with him).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09Z3Ww94IUk

The reality of MES is I beleive that (according to many who knew him) that he wasn't actually a very nice person. The full Glasto up here 2015 set is quite good, and you can visibly see the band members getting pissed off with his antics.

I can't stop listening to Dylan's "Changing of the Guards" -- his version, FB&C's version, and Patti Smith's version. All are great.

Some of the new Iggy album is decent. Good song this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Dn2spkKahE Would be great if someone got him to cover Gouge Away or something. BF said it would be cool if he covered Tame.

Saw The Divine Comedy a few weeks ago and it was a great gig. There's a strong case to be made that Neil Hannon is the best songwriter to have come out of Ireland.

I missed the Fall chat. This Nation's Saving Grace is excellent.

Found this from another thread:

"I saw Frank Black do a talk recently because the Pixies were doing a cover of Big New Prinz. He was asked why they were doing that and he said, 'Oh, because I went to the ballet.' So he went to one, and I think Sonic Youth came. I heard the Pixies' version of Big New Prinz and I know Ding who played bass in The Fall after me and who has also played on Pixies stuff. The Pixies were playing Manchester Apollo, so I asked Ding if I could get up - the guy who wrote Big New Prinz - and do it with them. But it was a no (laughs)." - Steve Hanley.

Been listening to this band all day, I'm really excited about them. (almost as excited when I discovered Drahla)

Imagine a female Eddie Argos talky singing to some nice Les Savy Fav-esque riffs. The Les Savy Fav quitarist himself is quite Joey Santiago-esque himself so you could say this band are overall a little bit Pixies-esque (but with perhaps slightly more discordant Sarah Nixey-esque vocals)

They've released two 6 track EPs with year and both of them are big double thumbs up from me.

A few weeks ago I got some free tickets to a Raconteurs show and ended up right on the barricade. It was a great show and afterwards I relistened to Jack White’s whole discography and then started digging back into some classic Detroit garage rock. Such a great scene.

Oh, and I played Headache on my radio show last week. A man called in to say he really liked my music choices and that Headache is one of his favorite songs. That was pretty cool!

I never realised I was a fan of Hootie & The Blowfish! My mate was always banging on about them, I always assumed they were a Scottish band. He liked his Scottish bands. Anyway, proper Americana rock and roll this new track is >

I fucking love Drahla. They're one of my favourite new bands, and they're from from Leeds! Just released a new song (following their great debut album this year) called Dogstar. It's got a real 80's lo-fi indie feel to it.

I feel bad I haven't given Skeleton Tree and now Ghosteen a proper try. I can't help thinking every word and note must be about his son's untimely death and I find that utterly depressing.

The "new" Leonard Cohen is wonderful. It's weird to get a posthumous album like this, but his son did a beautiful job finishing the songs.

The Fall canon is so huge it can seem daunting.

However the quality of their output is so high that it must be heard.

There are definite eras but as a whole in each era there is much to love.

Try starting with the best of CD, 50,000 falls fans cant be wrong, its a great place to start and get an idea of the eras.

If you like that, move onto the Peel sessions, they were almost like a house band for John Peel and did a session most years for a couple of decades.

A lot of the music on those Peel sessions is absolutely fantastic. After that you will be able to guide yourself through the albums and styles. Enjoy the ride.

^^ Fall Peel Sessions were often superior versions in my opinion. Eat Y'Self Fitter, one of my all time faves, is better in every way than the one on 'Perverted By Language' for instance.

Currently listening to Richard Dawson's album 2020.

Recently got my hands on a huge stack of Birthday Party vinyl with Nick's signature on a few of them so I've been listening pretty intently these past few days. As interesting as Nick's new album is. I miss his noisy garage sound. Also a bunch of original Meat Puppets vinyl with some very cool signatures- it appears that the band not only signed the covers but drew cartoons all over them. My favorite is a fish drawn by Cris. Apparently all of these signatures were done back in the 80s or so, when the bands came and visited our radio station. I wonder if I could get the Pixies to come by the station sometime.

As far as new bands go I'm listening to lots of Black Midi and Uranium Club. I agree with Pot, Drahla are really wonderful. Brittany Howard too.

Revisiting 'The Gun Club' discography, such a great band. Fire of Love often gets credited as their best (and influencing early Pixies sound) but they were so much more than that album. Miami is such a good album too - Mother of Earth sounds like it could have been on a later Catholics album.

https://youtu.be/hvvGM3QhtOg

House on Highland Ave from Death Party has been stuck in my head for weeks, all the albums are great.

https://youtu.be/VzrpJ4qb5Es

Only recently found about the tribute albums / sessions for Jeffrey Lee Pierce, featuring Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, Debbie Harry and more, worth a listen.

I felt the same, though when I'm in the mood for something a bit wilder from Nick I've been listening to Grinderman, a side project for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

Their first album is great, stripped down and raw - think they wanted to channel the Stooges I think they said in the press release at the time around 07. Their second album is very good too and there have been rumours of a 3rd instalment so fingers crossed.
