Stuck on the Kills' Midnight Boom earlier. Great wee album with lots of short punchy rock songs. Mosshart is a good vocalist. They're one of those bands that are just pretty damn solid.
I guess my most recent discovery is Moondog courtesy of some book on 'the best music you've never heard'. He's fucking phenomenal. Never heard of him before the book. He was a blind man known as the Viking of 6th Avenue because he used to hang around New York dressed as a viking with a full on huge beard. H'art Songs have been in constant rotation - it's an album of his more "lullaby-esque" songs and it's full of gems. Enough About Human Rights, Do Your Thing, I'm This I'm That and Choo Choo Lullaby are all brilliant. And then there's a song off another album called Invocation that's just twelve minutes of some horn sounds blasting over and over and it's probably the most motivating song ever put together. Genius. |

The Kills are a top band and still bringing out good albums. Seen them live three times, first time was supporting Franz Ferdinand in Leicester in 2004, before anyone (including myself) had even heard of them. I wouldn't say I was a fan of FF much but I got a free pass into that gig as a guy I worked with's dad did some building work for the guitarist's mum or something. Anyway, I was instantly sold on The Kills' performance that night and made it my immediate goal to acquire a recorded version of them. Took me ages to get a copy of their first album though, and every record shop I asked about them resulted in the same conversation- Do you have the new album by The Kills? The Killers? No, The Killzzz..
Anyway, the following year when I was living in Nijmegen in Holland they played Doornroosje, and man what a gig that was! Jamie Hince was making some crazy garage blues sounds on the guitar, and acting up well to the kind of psycho image the band had adopted. That night I made friends with a Dutch girl who was the resident photographer there, and got go backstage and stuff and meet the band. I had to work the next day so I left soon after their set, but later on when I met this again she told me that she was hanging out with them at the bar afterwards, so if I'd stayed I'd have gotten to meet them and drink a beer and smoke a joint with them, and now so many years later they are like mega-rockstars! Ah well..
I also saw them a third time in 2008 in Melkweg in Amsterdam, on the Midnight Boom tour, by which time they had pretty much made it big. The venue was absolutely packed out and I couldn't get very near the front, and I didn't really feel that they had the same energy live as they did the first two times I saw that. |

| Nice stories! I think I came across Cheap and Cheerful on hypem (remember that?!) and was instantly hooked. I've only seen them live once - they were supporting the Stooges in Dublin about ten years ago. I felt a little sorry for them because they were sandwiched between Stiff Little Fingers and Iggy and weren't really the right filling. I still enjoyed them but everyone else seemed a bit bemused. Could see Alison looking a bit sheepish in between songs. Sad because I'm sure she was thrilled beforehand to have the chance to share a stage with Iggy. |

It's quite sad though actually, I just remembered. Their latest album is a bit different to their previous ones, and the reason is apparently Jamie had an accident not so long ago and slammed his hand in a car door, I think it was his left. Broke some fingers and now he sadly can't play as well as he used. I think it was touch and go for a while as to whether or not The Kills were ever going to play again. That's a real bummer like, as anyone who has seen them play live prior to that will know the guy was an oustanding garage blues guitarist and had his own unique style. Now he can still play, but it causes him some pain and he'll never be as good.
I broke my right pinkie ten years ago and it's never been quite the same, but luckily for me it's the only finger I don't need to play classical guitar. That said though I've not picked up the guitar in years and can't play anywhere near as good as I used to anyway. |

Had never hear of them.
Dig them.
Especially the song Nothing Ever Happened.

I am about to check out The Orwells -Terrible Human Beings.
Track 5 is called Black Francis, and is about the main man.
Viva la Loma Rica, in the lyrics refer to No. 13 Baby.
I didn't know this, I really must read The Pixies' Doolittle (33 1/3).

at a concert i saw WAY back when.. (1990, one of his rare solo shows) he explained that line in No. 13 Baby as thus:
he said that when he was living in Torrence or wherever (in the South Bay) as a kid, there was a gang called V.L.L.R. which stood for Viva La Loma Rica, which means long live the rich hill.. but that he didn't know what that meant either.. but he said there was spray paint everywhere that said Viva La Loma Rica etc..
anyway.. that's what he said. never heard it was a game.

Dream Wife are touring Scotland next month. Wish I coud get to Glasgow and see them, I like them more than Pussy Riot and by coincidence I actually had a dream about them the other night.
Rainbow tank grrl is my favourite. She's quite a good punk guitarist, lots of angry dykes at the end.

I've never heard of him either, but apparently he's as old as my mum and his birthday is one day before me and he was born in Fife. Has written some songs in the past for Gerry Rafferty and also worked with Lindisfarne.
Nice to hear a country folk musician from Scotland. Reminds me a bit of John Denver? A Long Time Ago is a nice track from that live BBC iPLayer recording.

Really liked EMA's 2012 album Past Life Martyred but I never paid any attention to her after that. Turns out she's still bringing out great music.
I joined Apple Music for the three month trial, which is quite a nice trial period where you can basically listen to anything you want for free! So I'm using the opportunity to catch up on things I might have missed recently.
Her new EP Outtakes From Exile is some of the best stuff she's ever done, an extenstion to her album from last year.

Just listening to the new Richard Thompson album(s) Acoustic rarities. Don't know why it's called rarities because there are a few tracks on there that are rerecordings of some of his early work with Linda Thompson, which is quite well known to most who know Richard Thompson.
Proper folk music for non-Ed Sheeran fans.

Decided to trial Apple Music for three months, a pretty nice trial deal I think. Gives you free access to just about every album ever released in the history of albums, as well as instant streaming access to brand new material. Might consider subscribing at the end of it, pretty good value I think for £10 per month. Gone are the days of having to listen to new albums on the headphones in HMV, while inevitably dying for a slash.
Peter Kernel have a new album coming out soon and some of the new tracks of that are sounding pretty good, eg. Kanada. They're from Canada by the way.
They've always been a bit experimental, but not so much that it's boring. I'm listening to their first album from 2008 How To Perform At A Funeral and the track Shoot Back has a definite Pixies influence to it. Aris does a very good impression of some of the varied singing styles of Black Francis quite well also on the track Happy To See You, in fact if one was none the wiser one might be fooled into thinking it was TMH:

Luckily I bought practically the entier FBF + C backcatalogue 10 years ago on iTunes. Most of the albums were going for about £4.74 a pop, and I used to have money.
Then Apple wanted to charge me more money to get the same albums (I'd just paid hundreds of quid for) on 256kbps and DRM free, and that's when I told them where they can shove their iTunes.
Are you allowed to drop albums on to your iPod without buying them using this deal? I'm about to sell my 5 year old 160GB iPod Classic and invest some of the money I get back in a 128GB Micro SD card. Can't be bothered with the click wheel, it might have been good 15 years ago but it's a pain in the arse now. I still have my 8GB 2nd gen iPod touch but I don't imagine that can sync to Apple music.
That's the thing about Apple, they're quite good but at the same time they're a bunch of wanks when it comes to software obsolescence. |
