Random Jon Poole

Addictive solo album from ex member of Cardiacs (on a par with Pixies as my favourite band of all time). It's 80's influenced, electronic and punky, but sounds really fresh - great tunes.

Streamed here.

still enjoying early Bad Brains on my freeway commute. gets the blood flowing before work, along with lots of coffee. could be because it's one of the only cd's i have in my car at the moment. really enjoy all aspects of their music though. the hardcore songs and the reggae. there were so many terrible "hardcore" bands in that era, that are essentially pure noise. Bad Brains shit all over every band from that scene. and still do.

H.R. sure does love jah though eh? eh?

Whispering weeds in my head and in my humming this morning

remember that Frank quote from an interview? "So many words, so many ideas. You can sing about anything."

these guys agree
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_WkoCE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EqVGU_N_qw

still, something is wrong with people when that has 90 million views and Whispering weeds under 500.

The Velvets. shiney shiney, shiney boots of ever, hehe. Not kidding that triple whammy of Man, Venus and Heroin off of a Banana is the business. I've heard the hundreds of variations from the recent 6 cd release of it but nothing beats the originals. Remind yourself of just how good they are.

This last year I've been fairly obsessed with 1980s Japanese college rock. There's alot of stuff I still wanna check out but is virtually impossible to find.

After Dinner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuOluA1eki4
Luna Park Ensemble http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bScNXJ8xKBs
Pineapple 4.9 (only track on youtube sadly) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvIWkhdu7wE
Unita Minima http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEuQqfFEEVI

Just downloaded some stuff by a band called Saboten (all-female post-punk, not the newer "anime soundtrack" band). Sounds like a mix of Raincoats and Television.

Arctic Monkeys. Debut album is absolutely fantastic. Specifically the final track, 'A Certain Romance' plus a fuckload of other great tracks 'The View from the Afternoon', 'Fake Tales of San Fransisco', 'Mardy Bum'...pretty much just the whole album. Going to listen to some of their more recent stuff soon.

Where did mr.biscuitdoughhead go? I remember they were one of his favourite bands.

i've been enjoying the new MGMT actually.

as well as the new Midlake album "Antiphon." their last album was a major bummer. since then their main singer/songwriter left the band, but they are continuing on without him and made a very enjoyable album. the fantastical worlds are probably gone with smith, but so is the boringness of the last album.

Not new (in fact 33 years old) but been listening to The Fall's 'Grotesque' a lot lately. For me, their best album (today at least).

Kristin Hersh's great sounding demos for her next solo release Spark Meet Gasoline which are available for free download at her site (tip if you wanna) http://www.kristinhersh.com/Releases/spark/ Her playing is really great and there's more vigour in the songs than on her most recent Muses release. Really into these new songs.

will give some more chances but i really can't find anything redeeming in the new MGMT. i really like Congratulations. think it's better than their first album. so many great songs. content on the new album is almost unlistenable. it's like background circus music.

i appreciate they're experimenting and doing what they want, apparently, but there are no hooks, nothing catchy. which is all fine, but i don't even think they should put this album in the rock / pop genre

i tried to like Midlake back in the day. think they are a really talented band but i find their music to be too much of a downer somehow. not talking about lyrics either. the overall tone of most of their music is just too subdued and melancholy for me. never find myself in the mood to want to put them on.

this is not to say i don't like dark or "depressing" music. i can't put my finger on it but their music is just very blah for me

all right, i got Reflektor off amazon for $3.99. bam. so far i'm enjoying it a great deal. I've always heard A LOT of Talking Heads in LCD Soundsystem, and i'm glad to hear TH in this Arcade Fire album as well. Even an allusion to Heaven?

floop, have you listened to the midlake album Bamnan And Slivercork? as a grandaddy fan i figured you'd dig the musical aspect. the lyrics are all about this fantasy/sci-fi world in which the oppressive power (the Monocle Men) have people in a walled-off city, subdued by superstitions. the story is filled out through the songs, which are like short stories. one song is about a guy who commissions a balloon maker to aid in his planned escape, and another details the failure of the plan.

but still, i get your point about the "sad" tone of their brand of music, but grandaddy is pretty sad too, eh?

their last album, the Courage of Others, is a big ol waste though.

when you say side 2 do you mean Vol. I side 2 or Vol. II all together (but especially the first two tracks)? i picked up the double album and on first listen i like Vol. I better....i shall spin again.

back on topic. not so new but i scored the deluxe reissue of SY Dirty (4 LPs) - and what a damn fine collection of songs....not sure where i ranked that in my best of 92 but i should probably bump it up a bit after these relistens.

my guilty pleasure recently has been Lorde.
My 6 year old daughter turned me onto her music 5 months ago as she wanted me to find some for her to listen to in the car. At that point I hadn't heard anything even though it had quite a high level of saturation on tv and radio here.
But she's become quite a sensation, but I find it utterly enthralling.
very impressive for a 16 (now 17) year old.
and considering that her hit, Royals, is actually the weakest song on her album shows how strong a record it is.
certainly not the only situation where the hit single isn't as strong as the rest of the album....

in a way she reminds me of Kate Bush, probably because she was also in her teens when she wrote this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW3gKKiTvjs

in my ears in the last twenty minutes:
Nick Cave - Jubilee Street
FIDLAR - Cocaine
MGMT - Your Life is a Lie
Animal Collective - Purple Bottle

big ups to that list, tis. though that mgmt song is my least fav on the new alb. Mystery Disease is killer.

FIDLAR is great. i love that album so much.

i'm in one of those no man's lands where i'm not jonesing for anything in particular, so it's all throwing shit at the wall and seeing what toots my fancy. some BlitzTrap, some Arcade Fire, some Midlake. Starlight Mints yesterday and this morning. i don't know what the fuck i'm doing.

i'm in the same situ JJ i've been throwing on the new Arcade Fire, Breeders LSXX, Push The Sky Away (NC&tBS), Lee Ranaldo's Between the Tides And The Times, and I've played Side one of the Sid & Nancy soundtrack about 10 times in the past week. Love Kills!

I'm waiting for EP2.

i like that Arcade Fire album, but side two is a little boring to me. 2nd track reminds me of November Rain (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just sort of distracting). That Orpheus song (not sure if that's the title) sounds VERY MUCH like a certain Mew song. all in all the first disc is a hoot and the 2nd disc is a bit drab. IN MY OPINION, FLOOP; STOP BEING A DICK ABOUT IT.
