Will the Catholics be appreciated by a wider audience in the future; not so much for an experimental edge but based on the high song writing quality? I don't know...I think so.
The way Frank wedded traditional rock-n-roll and country/rockabilly to his unique voice and songwriting is wonderful.

The Catholics era was reevaluated by me today. I listened to the Double Door concert from 2003. These guys were amazingly great live.
I miss them.

and they toured the northeast at least once a year. seeing them in their sundays suits was very cool. watching Rich Gilbert standing 3 feet in front of me playing his guitar with a drum stick weren't so bad, either.
i say it is time for a new reunion tour; not for Pixies, but for Frank Black and the Catholics. |

i enjoyed frank's dapper suit when he played boston in the fall of 2002
rich gilbert played his guitar with a half-full bottle of beer, with some splashing out into the audience
i wish i could remember the setlist but i'm sure it was killer

My Catholics highlights would be seeing the band and FB for the first time in King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow 2001.
It was the UK tour just after the release of Dog in the Sand.
It's a very small intimate venue, im sure pot will tell you more if you ask him!
Anyway, I was making my way through the crowd to find a good spot, Rich Gilbert said "excuse me" to get past as he was going to the stage. I didn't know it was him til later.
The band came on to the music of Johnny Cash through the PA.
I didn't know how good they would be but it was amazing...my personal highlights were "Stupid Me", "Los Angeles", "Coming Into Los Angeles", Gouge Away", "Nimrods Son", "Where Is My Mind", "If it takes all night" and "Dancing the Manta Ray". What a night! |

Today I reevaluated Black Letter Days. Well it was still as mindblowing as I remembered.
Seriously, how such records could be ignored by critics is a fucking joke. Black Letter Days is an unsurpassable masterpiece. There's not a single note that falls flat, and it's all live to 2 tracks.
Tomorrow: Devil's Workshop.

I read an old review earlier. The author mentioned fans switching off when Black Francis ended the Pixies and became Frank Black.
It's not the first time i've read or heard this.
I still don't get why some would be turned off by the orange album.
I think i'm trying to say the Catholics will be appreciated the day Charles Thompson is appreciated.

I was always a sucker for Devil's Workshop.
Especially The Scene.
Maybe it's because it was one of the first song's I learned to play.
I loved the all the instruments in the intro.
Don't know if it's right but I like the bass.

You said it, ClassicalRey. DEVILS WORKSHOP reign supreme over the over-bloated, overrated BLACK LETTER DAYS...the album at the bottom of my list. I've said this for years, never been afraid to state it here, always have been lambasted for it, yet I still stick to my guns. There are about 3 good songs on BLD. Chip Away Boy, 21 Reasons, and Jane The Queen of Love. The rest, while still better than the average other artist, are just...well...just there.
DEVILS WORKSHOP, on the other hand, is priceless. Some great stuff on that gem. It feels like a really REALLY good 'greatest hits' compilation...with all-new, unheard greatest hits, if that makes sense.

i would agree that BLD is a little bloated. some of the songs could have been relegated to b-sides. it's not like his b-sides aren't as good as the album cuts, they just didn't fit in the vision of the album.
it would be fun pairing down BLD to make a more succinct record.
DW really is a great collection of songs. i'd say it falls off SLIGHTLY at the end, but just slightly.

I don't know if Black Letter Days has ANY black letter songs on it. Never appreciated the Tom Waits bookends though. But with David Phillips in his band it was inevitable he'd record Waits sooner or later. I just wish he'd chosen a Waits song that Dave actually played on like That Feel off Waits' album Bone Machine. Bone Machine huh, how's that for a coincidence?

here's my paired down BLD tracklisting.
1. whispering weeds

3. southbound bevy
4. chip away boy

11. 21 reasons

i was surprised at how well "whispering weeds" works as an opener. well, there actually aren't many great openers on the album. it was either this or "chip away boy" or "21 reasons." in the end, i though a nice, breezy opener was best, as opposed to the dark and dreamy "chip away boy" or anthemic "21 reasons."
"jane" seems like an obvious center point and/or beginning of side B, so i went with it.
i also really like "southbound bevy" being up front. it gives it an "out of state"-like position. plus it sets up "chip away boy" really well.
this means the following are b-sides:
black riders 1 & 2
black letter days (here getting the SMYT treatment)
1826
i will run after you (getting the shaft again! it got booted in a previous, better incarnation, so it shouldn't feel too bad.)
true blue (great song, it just didn't work with my list)
b-sides seem to be more appreciated anyway, so i definitely don't see it as a slap in the face to these fine songs.
