I guess I don't agree with Bob this time.

Music is not an ordinary job like baker, postman or ambulance driver, the ones that complain about free music and free downloading are just afraid to lose their "status" and be part of the mass. If you want to pay, pay, if you don't want to pay -for good or bad reasons- don't pay.

Art should be free. Musicians should never be dependent on money.

I think Radiohead had a great idea by doing that, every initiative that aim at bypassing the musical industry is a good one IMO.

I agree. The music industry is comprised of circle-jerk money-whores who put together shitty acts and release formula recordings and launch massive arena tours all for the sake of the coveted dollar.

The perfect example of their greedy ways can be seen in their legal attacks on college students and even on the world of guitar tabs.

Fuckin' money-whores, man.

Onward, Radiohead!!!!

I agree to a point. There is a difference between emerging artists and money-whores on tour 30 years after they made bazillions.

surely if you become famous for your music, it'd be quite impractical to keep a regular job that pays? not just because you're writing, recording and touring all the time (which i think is reason enough), but because you'd get harassed by colleagues and/or customers all the time.

"musicians should never be dependent on money" - you say this as if musicians are in a different league to us regular mortals who need money to survive.

some people don't mind paying for someone's art... thank god these people exist, otherwise good bands couldn't exist.

ps. i didn't read the blog, i don't know what bob says.

I like to complain

Money is only a problem when you dilute your form of expression, be dishonest with yourself or give up your dignity to get it, like when a band with a healthy creative streak starts listening to a music producer who would like to blandify the music to make it appeal to a broader section of the public - for example, Dillinger Escape Plan changing from a band capable of all those loopy time signatures and melodies into making slick niche-marketed garbage in the space of one album.
I put on shows and it gives me and my girlfriend and her cat a nice place to live, I'm cool with that. I don't see being a musician as being different than being a baker - people either like my bread and they come back for more or they don't and they go eat something else.

I don't mind paying for art, because I'm able to and because I can't live without it -unfortunately it's not the case for everyone, but I really think it should be free.

I'm not saying that musicians are superior to other people, or that they don't need money to live. Indeed we live in a world where it's impossible to live without earning or stealing money.

It's just that it gets on my nerve when I hear musicians who complain about free music and free art. They're not fighting for good reasons. Every media or technological way to spread art to the largest part of people -and that includes free downloading- is a progress for human kind.

In fact the old world is over, and they better get used to it.

Artists should be payed by the governments if they want to live from their art. That's really what I think. But I guess it's not gonna be for tomorrow yet.

I agree with the fact that you can keep the most part of your integrity even if you get paid for your art. But sooner or later, for one reason or another, I'm sure that it becomes a problem. It's just the way to deal with the problem that counts.

But I keep thinking money -and religions- are the worse diseases of human kind.

I like paying for music! It's one of the few things I enjoy paying for.

This thing Radiohead is doing is cool, though. I'm mostly interested in the fact that they're releasing it in a big deluxe edition with CDs and vinyl. This fits in with a long-simmering theory of mine that the record business will respond to the changing times by becoming more like the book business.

New hardcover books are expensive--about $30 on average--and I think physical copies of music will become more expensive. Lowering CD prices isn't going to do anything. So many people today with their iPods aren't interested in CDs at any price. So, I think it would interesting to raise prices and go after the collectors, and give them nice things to collect. Make it a nice, luxurious package, and then, if demand is sufficient, a more barebones "paperpack" copy comes out later. This Radiohead thing is perfect example of this.

The pricey, deluxe, collectible, "first edition" release = hardcover book

The conventional CD release (which Radiohead is apparently going to put out next year) = paperback book

Free sound files on the internet = copy at the library

I like that.

I've never cared about Radiohead, but I'm gonna give a listen to the new album. If I like it, I might blow the $80 on the CD/LP set--for the music and to support what they're doing.

Was it the lack of people buying your bread that made you become a msucian instead and write songs about it?

yes I just got back a month ago. I lost my passport so had to travel back over land, which is cool in its own way. Right now I'm enjoying being in the same place for more than 48 hours. Got some great photos there I'll pass on to you!
