The band played The BlueFinger Material. For the Pixies fans, Wave of Mutilation was played. The new stuff is fun. But there is something about the old stuff that is spritual to me. Long live Charles and everyone who is involved. |

If I remember right he said something about Jim Morrison. I would put that in history if we are counting anymore. |

Thanks a million for the vids, andypdx. I'm putting them on fb.net YouTube playlist right now.
Good to see Frank's got his guitar in his hands again.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Hello to all! I have just come back from taping the second night of two Portland, Oregon shows at the beginning of a two week West Coast tour for Black Francis (Frank Black). After speaking to Bobby (soundman for Black/Frank/Charles), open taping is allowed at these "Bluefinger" shows. That includes soundboard access as well as running mics. The only stipulation (direct from the man himself) for being allowed to tape is that you DO NOT get in anyone's way (band, crew, audience). So, depending on the venue, it may not work out for you to run a mic stand. I would love to see tapers come out for these shows since this is a rare thing to have open access to the soundboard (and mics for that matter) for recording at Frank's shows.
We should hear some great recordings from this tour! |

OK. Here's some video from Tuesday night (10/02/07).
Unfortunately, I only have the first 9 songs he played, and there are a few strange camera angles thanks in part to the overly drunk B*TCH directly to the right of the camera. (Don't you hate those people?)
Yeah.... sorry about the annoying chick in the vids. I was doing my best to keep her out of the shots. I wish I could have moved to a better spot, there just wasn't any other place. She was such a pain in the ass. There's always one of THOSE people at shows it seems.
Anyway, thanks andypdx for posting the videos to your youtube for me!
All in all, it was a great show. Based on reports from Monday's show, it appears that Tuesday wasn't much of a departure. The only real difference was the Pixie's songs at the beginning. He played Gyaneshwar, Holiday Song, The Water, Wave of Mutilation, and Stormy Weather. The rest of the set was Dead Man's Curve, Test Pilot Blues, Tight Black Rubber, Captain Pasty, Your Mouth into Mine, Threshold Apprehension, She Took All the Money, Discotech 36, Bluefinger, You Can't Break a Heart and Have It, Angels Come to Comfort You, Lolita, Break My Body, and Motorway to Roswell. No encore, though "History Song" was listed last on the setlist, but that was not played. Also, he did break out the harmonica for a few songs. Violet was there and she came on about halfway through and sang back up. There were a couple of nice candid moments between the two of them. At one point she took off the striped, long-sleeve shirt she was wearing (she had a tank top on underneath) and exposed her belly - and you could definitely see she was pregnant and had a nice tat!
The show was fantastic and did not disappoint on any level. The only thing that would have made it any better would have been if that drunk chick was not there. Seriously, she was so loud and obnoxious, at one point during FB's chatty moments, she started screaming so loud that he just trailed off and didn't finish his story... .
Can't wait for the Eugene show!! |

Andy noted the acoustic solo set above, which aside from 'Gyaneshwar' and 'The Water' was different than the one he played Monday.
'Dead Man's Curve' was the only new addition to the band set, I think -- and it was awesome. After that he played all of Bluefinger, and then finished off with 'Break My Body' and 'Motorway to Roswell.' Maybe a little looser and rock-ier than the first night. The band was good, again. Violet was strong, again. There was intermittent harmonica.
BF was not quite as chatty as on Monday. He seems to be fighting a cold, and for the second half of the show had an unfortunate bit of snot peeking out of one nostril. It drove us nuts, those of us close enough to see (I was front and center and, my heavens, it was almost unbearable). We tried to get Violet's attention so she could help out with a towel or whatever, but even though she looked at him intently several times at close range, she either didn't notice this rather obvious nasal issue or chose not to address it.
As on Monday, no encore; he begged off with something about having a long drive to make to the "cooler Vancouver," which was a gentle dig at Portland's dumpy neighbor across the Columbia River, Vancouver, WA. Local humor.
Maybe the Pixies songs at the end were meant to serve as a de facto encore. Sure, it was a little disappointing not to hear different Pixies songs with the band on the second night, but who knows how many Pixies songs this band knows, etc. It was another great goddamned show, so I certainly ain't complaining. |

Those vids are great, andy, donna, nice work.
There was another drunken chooch who made her way to the front and jostled past me, actually tried to ask BF a serious question between songs -- as if he were going to stop what he was doing to have a conversation? -- and as he was waving goodbye at the end of the show, reached out and tugged on his shirt. She's lucky I'm such a gentleman that I didn't give her a thorough clubbing for this transgression, though she did get a stern talking-to from a bouncer person. Don't touch Charles! |

Yes. A few people were very lucky that they didn't get clocked last night.
I can't take credit for the videos, though. Although I uploaded them, they were filmed by poster 'donnapdx' above.
Thanks donnapdx! :) |

great show last night. loved the pixies stuff, especially "motorway"! i drove down from seattle and when we got to the hotel they were soundchecking. i hung out for a while and heard "dead man's curve" and "captain pasty" about 5 times. then my wife and i went to dinner and saw frank come in to the restaurant. skippy sat down at a table near us.
when i checked out of my hotel today i ran into frank himself! he was checking out too. we chatted a bit about him maybe coming to seattle. he asked me if i knew any small venues that he could play a couple nights at and i suggested neumos, and i mentioned thurston moore was coming there and we talked about thurston for a bit. then he shook my hand and said "nice to meet you". a real nice guy! |

Thanks Donna, Nate and Andy in the PDX crew for representin' fb.net! You guys did a fantastic job at putting this all together. Thanks especially to Donna and Andy for the rockin' vids. This seriously has made my week.
Thanks too to badronald for posting the fb.taping policy. Very cool news, indeed.
Now only if we could keep up this high caliber of video/audio taping quality for the other shows, that would really be something.
By the way if any of you PDX crew are ever near MSP, give me a shout.
