T-minus one week to these shows to kick off the wee tour, and it doesn't yet have its own thread? Well, let's set that right, anyway.
I'll be hitting both the Monday and Tuesday shows. Hope to see some of you there and there.
I see that tickets are still available here: http://ticketswest.rdln.com/Artist.aspx?evt=57975
This is gonna be good. |

If one of my professors can give me a little reimbursement from a college course, I'll try and make it. |

Good gravy, I am excited about these shows. Just three more days to wait.
Playing 'Bluefinger' over and over. Appreciating it more fully each time through.
Wondering what Pixies songs we'll hear, and whether Violet will sing on any of them...
Anticipation mounts... |

... and interested to see a fourth personnel lineup in the past thirteen months.
Olympia: Charles all by his lonesome Seattle & Portland: with Duane, Billy & EDF Salem: with Normal, Ding, Skippy, & Violet next week: Bluefinger gang
Just giddy is all. Hence these dumb comments I'm posting. |

i'm curious to know if he'll be opening with a solo set to lengthen out each show like the last couple tours. i'd be happy if he played blufinger in it's entirety and then did an encore of TOTY in it's entirety.
The waxworks were an immensely eloquent dissertation on the wonderful ordinariness of mankind. |

also, somebody please post setlists, this is how i will decide if i go the second night, if they are drastically different in non-blufinger stuff then it's a certainty i'll be going both nights.

Sorry, shine, but I won't be of any help by way of set lists. I tend to get lost in the euphoria of the moment, which along with the beer compromises what little short-term memory I have to begin with. Selfish, I know, but as a wiser man said, I am what I yam.
Odds are someone will be at the Doug Fir shows who is a little more composed, and able to report on the logistickal details. |

Aye, aye, folks. We'll do our best to get this tour kick-started. I think there's going to be a lot of screaming. A lot of glorious, glorious screaming.
Busy at "work" today painting my fingertips blue.
(P.S. tickets still available for both nights. Let's go, Portland!) |

WOW! WOW! WOW! The show was incredible!
He started out with a solo acoustic set of 6(?) older songs including The Water, Cactus, Gyaneshwar, WIMM?, ... (sorry, my head's still buzzing, there were a couple of others as well...can somebody help me? )
Then the rest of the band joined him on stage, and they basically played all of Bluefinger...with a couple of old songs (Break my Body, Motorway to Roswell) thrown in as well.
I've uploaded a few pics from tonight's show to flickr (including the setlist) The setlist was pretty much adhered to with 'Your mouth into mine' dropped down a few slots from its place on the setlist, and 'History Song' skipped.

Wow! Could he have chosen two better Pixies songs to play?! I thought he'd have forgotten how to play Motorway by now it's been so long. I'm in shock. How did Angels Come To Comfort You sound? And Violet? And...

Good golly, that was amazing. so incredibly good, and the big man was seemingly in good spirits and a bit chatty, too! Aren't you jealous that I went tonight and am going again tomorrow!
Chatty... one little aside from BF, addressing how there is some debate over the provenance of the term "chippyin' man," which can only be referring to the debate which occurred here on this forum, right? he went on to say that it originated with the west coast jazz scene, and he said "Chet Baker" right at the moment I said "Chet Baker" (eerie!), where when they wanted something less than the full fix they would skin pop (BF pantomimes skin-popping, wow wow WOW, bantering with the absolutely flummoxed bass player). The other thing I remember (I am still a bit buzzed snd super euphoric) was a little bit about his having given up on meeting people in bars(or something) but this next song about having met this person in this particular bar.. Discotheque 36. With significant looks shared between them. Very cute.
Speaking of Violet, she sang on over half (I would guess) of the songs with the band. She was absolutely radiant in bleached hair. Was a little faint from where I was standing, but may be she was low in the mix or whatever... from what I could hear she was sticking all the harmonies without a miss. Sounded great, looked great... absolutely lovely.
Also something about a trip to India last year that I didn't quite get, something about tuning his guitar with a double D?
I have some crappy pix from my cell phone -- I was front and center, right near the front there -- will try to figure this out when things are more clear... so bombed right now, but so very happy... |

And he looked fantastic -- black stripey shirt, black trousers, dark sunglasses the whole time -- in case I didn't mention that. For a very pregnant person, his Violet wasn't showing much at all. A very handsome couple.
Opening band 'Eastern Conference Champions' were just the latest in the series of FBF puzzling/challenging/deliberately unsatisfying opening acts... crummy alterna-pop blah with incredibly annoying whiney vocals. Barf.
Did I mention I saw Charles Normal in the crowd after the show, heading backstage?
Trying to that what else, as memory fades... god DAMN, the songs from Bluefinger sounded awesome. |

Nate: any Catholics songs in the lot?
Where's the exhaustive setlist?
I hope to have as much fun as you tomorrow night...
Cheers

Not a single Frank Black song in the lineup, as well as I can recall.
There was a guy to my left who was recording -- but he was lamenting the quality and wasn't sure about offering it up. That's the key for a complete set list, unless someone can post here who actually remembers everything.
I think there were two or three solo songs after 'Where is My Mind?' but can't recall. As you've probably guessed or figured out Charles was the lone guitar, acoustic in the beginning and electric later on for most (maybe all?) of the band songs.
Also, BF promised a "completely different" set tonight, second night at the same venue. For anyone with a chance to see two. We'll see how he delivers on that promise.
Finally, no encore. Which I love. You gotta earn an encore with this man, and that's the way it oughta be. |

I think it was closer to ninety minutes in all...
But again, we need someone to step forward like Al Michaels for play by play; the best I can provide is some color commentary. |

Positively chatty.
I've seen him 8 times now.
11/13/1998 - Spokane, WA 06/28/1999 - Reno, NV (The Ziggens as Opener) 03/03/2000 - Seattle, WA (Reid Paley as Opener) 05/08/2001 - Spokane, WA (House of Large Sizes as Opener) 03/21/2002 - Santa Ana, CA 04/24/2004 - Spokane, WA (With Joey, Kim, and David in tow) 11/14/2006 - Portland, OR (Guardians of Metropolis opens) 10/01/2007 - Portland, OR (As Black Francis)
Out of all of the previous 7 shows, last night was the chattiest I've ever seen him. He said more last night, than he has in all these previous shows combined. |

Cool, they played Where is My Mind, one my favorite live Pixies' tracks. I wonder how Planet of Sound would sound with this line up. |

Ah... the memory's coming back. The acoustic set also included Mr. Grieves....but I think there was at least one more..
Hey, Nate...was it Velouria (I Think)...
He also went on a tangent about Big Red chewing gum between songs. I thought for a moment he was going to play the song....but no.
Oh - more banter. Right before he sung 'She Took All the Money', he said, 'This song has absolutely nothing to do with Nina Hagen...nothing to do with Nina Hagen'
Hmmmm...??? :) |

I'm so insanely jealous - this is going to be a bit of heaven and hell reading about all these shows over the next several weeks. Cuz I'm stuck way over on the East coast (with the solitary blues).
I hope that we get some new radio interviews and live clips along the way like we did during the most recent Europe tour. |

BF seems so happy and loose; the intensity is still there but he's shed some of that gruff stage demeanor which was so, ah, daunting, intimidating, all the times I saw him before the shows in the past year.
As noted before, this has gotta be the Violet Effect. Having her on stage with him just magnifies it. |

Encapsulate, I would would say the occasional indulgence in drinky drinky seems like a symptom and not a cause. I think his life got better, with this good woman he found and the kids and everything, and he has loosened up accordingly. A glass of wine, playful banter between songs, that sort of thing. Just one man's opinion.
I know not this 'Turpentine' of which you speak. |
