My fav Frank albums are 'Teenager' and 'Show me your Tears'. I love the yells and the Catholics although I didn't get into 'Honeycomb' or 'Fastman Raiderman' as much as I did his previous records.

Anyway, this made me think Frank is on a good wave and what do you do as an artist when you're on a good wave ? You record something else ! "Garçon, one album for 2008 please!"

I'd just add that Show Me Your Tears has a few high-rock moments, at least -- Massif Centarl, the Snake.... So even FB isn't sure what kind of fan he is of himself!

Eclectic all the way, baby. I'm sure if we aggrogated everybody's record collections on this board we would have every genre, if not every artist, ever conceieved of in 'pop music' and beyond!

Admittedly, that one did surprise me! But there ya go... A venn diagram of musical styles would I'm sure have Frank Black and Garth Brooks cross somewhere on the giant miasma known as 'country'. Not that there's ever an accounting for taste....

Ok this is just making it needlessly confusing, but there should be a fourth category in my opinion. Those who like Bluefinger, Teenager of the Year and the Pixies, also like Show Me Your Tears, Fast Man Raider Man, Dog in the Sand and Honeycomb just as much; however don't much like Frank Black and the Catholics, Pistolero or Cult of Ray.

That's the "anti-middle brigade", it's quite common from my experience and most of my friends belong to this group.

but what about the fifth category, those who like surfer rosa and pistolero, but not honeycomb or come on pilgrim, and while perfectly happy to listen to dog in the sand on a tuesday, would never dream of putting bluefinger on at the weekend?

no disrespect to fb, but its a well known fact that the only permissable music on a sunday morning is "sunday morning" by the velvets...

As a fellow fan since '94, I would respectfully suggest a third category.

3. "Put me on a desert island with TOTY and I'll be fine" fan
Favorite albums: Come on Pilgrim, Teenager of the Year, Black Letter Days
Favorite songs: Caribou, Superabound, California Bound
This type of fan is me.

Another boring answer, but I'm a fan of both categories, or however many categories there are now. I love it all equally just about, but I listen to the Catholics slightly more than the other eras. FB&TC's self-titled is my fave.

I never saw the Catholics live (boo hoo) but they could do both things, which is probably the reason why I became a massive fan to begin with. Teenager is my favourite album, but Catholics live gigs are my favourite recordings. I still don't think I'd quite enjoy a Catholics gig as much as I did last week's gig in Nijmegen, though. So...another hybrid.

Hmmm. Did you know "sunday morning" is about dreading sunday morning? Or more specifically Saturday night coming to an end?

nope, i hadn't picked up on that.

it's still the most appropriate song for a sunday morning because the refrain is, like, "sunday morning", innit?

not rocket science, is it ?

Fantastic way to put it, raasclaat. That's exactly how I feel. While I think it's cool that our guy FB was in the Pixies, and I did at one point have a lot of love for the Pixies songs, my heart's with FB solo stuff.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Yeah, post-high paranoia. I remember a Sunday morning after a speedy Saturday in my late teens when a friend of mine was absolutely certain that the sun was following him for half an hour, trying to hide as we were walking home. And it's possibly where Kristofferson got the idea for Sunday Morning Coming Down from, my #1 Sunday song.

I got into Black Letter Days which came out when I was about twenty. I'd heard of the Pixies (obviously) but didn't listen carefully until a couple of years ago. I love the way his career is so versatile that there's something for any occasion, and that he manages to take from the rich tapestry of american music without sounding like a parody... How many people could pull off material like Johnny Barleycorn without sounding a bit twee? Fast Man Raider Man is my fallback album; I play it when I'm writing and also in mixed age company- my mum and grandma both like it too!

I am loving the Blufinger album at the moment! I teach first year art history at a british university and am going to play it to my class in October when we look at outsider art as part of a critical dialogue... the Herman Brood angle will make a refreshing change from dragging out Billy Childish once again!

So, not sure what category I fit into... just a gal with great taste??
