Being a Frank Black fan since 1994, I recognized that there are 2 main types of fans:
1. "FB rock hard and scream" fan Favourite albums: Bluefinger - especially songs Tight Black Rubber, Threshold Apprehension, Captain Pasty All Pixies albums, especially Surfer Rosa This type of fan does like the new FB tour, with FB performing very punky.
2. "FB Acoutic Guitar and Alternative Country fan" Favourite albums: Black Letter Days, Show Me your Tears, Dog In the Sand, Honeycomb. Favourite Songs: Panamerican Highway, New House of The Pope, etc. This type of fan loves to see FB play solo acoustic most. This fan does not care about the Pixies too much.
As for me, I am definitely fan no. 2 and I hope to see a full lenght solo acoustic show very soon
I konow, most of you will like all FB songs (me too, almost), but it would be interesting to know what "kind of Frank" you enjoy most ?

As boring as it may be for this thread, I like them both as well, the hard rocking punky and the mellow rootsy Frank.
But I discovered him through the Pixies and just love his weird energy and the scream, so if pressed I would go for Frank #1. |

I don't think I can commit myself to any of those catergories, valhalla. The man has far too many strings to his bow that if i chose one side of the man, I know I'd seriously miss parts of the other sides. I think my taste would be better defined if I were to place these eras in order of preference..
..on a line graph. it would pretty much be a straight line.
of course, i would hazard a guess that most if not all appreciate the solo acoustic side of Frank's songs. |

I like to match my FB music to my mood. I'm a mellow but emotional person, so I end up playing Honeycomb more than anything else. But I have moods for all of FB's music. I'm still trying to figure out which mood this new behavior is going to fit:

WHAT ? Both of course. As I like both parts of "Los Angeles". If you like crazy screaming punk AND mellow country pop (and a lot of other styles) FB is the man. If you like just one of these categories you have plenty of choice. So much artists are "one dimensioned". |

Both for me though I defintely choose solo acoustic above all other but that don't necessarily mean gentle strumming either.

Acoustic Frank or Punky Frank? I guess I "go both ways". The live version of "Burnt Out Rock 'N' Roll" covers both styles IMHO |

How can anyone choose?
I guess I agree with coasty about the mood thing, but i'm sorta leaning towards no. 2. Selkie Bride is my favoritest song ever, but i'd rather see one of the recent shows than an acoustic show cos it seems more fun. i dunno, i can never decide anything.
But not really. |

I don't really agree with the choices given to us, vahalla. They are definately two types of FB songs, but you could come up with more: songs about people, ufo, road tripping, geography, etc. I started out as a huge pixies fan around 93-94, but something happened around DITS that made me an FB fan first and foremost. I witnessed a solo accustic show last summer and have seem him with the C's twice before. All three shows were awesome in different ways. I think a solo show is the epitimy of the FB experience. I'm trying not to listen to Bluefinger all that much until actual release, but did skank a copy in case it turns out to be an alt version. Favorite songs: Highway to Lowdown, Man of Constant Sorrow, Brick is Red, Western Star, Remake (live w/ nashville player). There are probably others depending on the day.

I think category 1 should be re-worded to be to "FB rock hard and scream mainly for Pixies fans and the fans of the first two FB solo albums".
If that’s the case then I am a Category 1 chap.

As I read the description of #1, I thought, "Yeah!! That's Me!!" TAME! DEAD!! I adore Surfer Rosa and Bluefinger ROCKS! THEN... I read the description of #2. I always say Black Letter Days is my favorite FB album. I couldn't live without DITS, Honeycomb, Pan American Hwy, or New House of the Pope.
I simply cannot commit to either of the two. It's all Frank and it's all GREAT!!!

i suggest a third type of frankophile: the eclectic motherfucker who likes it all.
not every song, necessarily, but every genre that he covers.
and i would also like to give a shout out to the much maligned JT. not that you need my advice, but, please, keep on rocking. |

The third.
I've been surprised at how many people became FB fans before even hearing the Pixies. Maybe half of this forum's members? The eclecticism of FB has to be one of the appealing qualities of being a fan. You never know what you're going to get, but at the least you know it's not going to flat out suck, even if it's not right up your alley.
Put this way, I've been to as many FB/Pixies shows as there are FB/Pixies albums, and there are maybe 2 out of both the albums and shows that I didn't completely enjoy in some way. I love the rock band, the mellow band, the acoustic...I think it's all great. I'm really looking forward to seeing the new setup with him as a front-man and not playing guitar. I don't think anyone saw that coming!

I never saw it coming either but the way FB's explained why he's doing it is irresistable. Coastline, perhaps after this we'll think of him as more frontman than anything else?

You mean a frontman like Herman Brood, trobrianders? Maybe, at least until the next phase comes along. What I've been wondering lately is how he manages to go through all these phases of his career without a single one of them seeming phony. Remember when Garth Brooks -- who was phony to begin with, I realize -- did that weird Chris Gaines thing, where he tried to be a rocker? Phony, phony, phony. And when Liz Phair tries to be a teeny-bopper idol? The kids love her now, but it's phony. FB takes on new things -- new identities, even -- without for a second seeming phony about it. I guess maybe the difference is that he obviously isn't doing it to make a buck; he seems to be following his muse. Whatever it is, I've learned to not get comfortable with any of his phases. Unlike a lot of fans, I loved the Nashville phase, and I didn't want it to end so quickly, but I also knew he couldn't just settle into that for the rest of his career. That wouldn't make any sense after the career he's had. So what phase is he in now, anyhow? Is it punk? Is it just plain rock? Is it disco?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

You hit on my sentiments exactly and mentioned a couple things that I've been thinking of just recently. The Chris Gaines thing was hiLARious!!! I never did like Garth Brooks - watching him jump the shark like that was just too funny. me and my girlfriend were remembering that and laughing about it just a few days ago so funny you'd mention that. And Liz Phair too - what a giant dissapointment that was when she became a pop tart. I used to love her!!! I was totally let down when she took her new direction.
I've never detected one ounce of pretentiousness or phoniness in Frank's music or performances. That's a huge part of his draw for me. I don't think we ever have to worry about him going Liz Phair on us.
Frank is like Dylan in his ability to mix things up and keep himself interested without sacrificing anything and always staying true to himself. Except I'd say that when Dylan was in approx the same point of his career that Frank is in now - he'd already turned out some stinkers. Sure there are some tunes that I don't like as much as some others - but overall I think Frank has yet to make a mistake. That's just my opinion.
I was a little skeptical when I heard Frank was playing without his guitar but after seeing the clips from these shows - I just say "kudos to you Frank - touche!!" Do whatever it is you feel you need to do man - just keep that good music coming!!! |

that is the best idea for a tattoo i have ever heard. perhaps there should be a Frank Black full back tattoo club. don't think i will be joining, though. unless maybe it was a Frank Black full back henna tattoo club. that is a little more up my alley. |

Now I think about it it's hard to see any forum members sliding simply into one of two types. But the point about phases of FB's career is something I hadn't really thought about before. Normally you think 'well that's just Charles, it's cool', or FB or whatever. Someone once posted that FB, Nick Cave and Tom Waits were their holy trinity and I replied 'See you in church'. They're all like that, they know who they are, what they're about, so why would they ever come off as phony or make a dud album.
Liz Phair's still cool in my book. I think she's still having the last laugh but that's another thread.
