Ooh, I feel spanked.
Lighten up Dallas. Harrased. That made me chuckle.
Idiot. |

I prefer you in reasonable mode. Some good points made. I wasn't aware you'd produced some of the earlier rockier FB. Would be good to get your professional opinion of Mark Lemhouse's work on Bluefinger. Then this thread might actually have a point save the noises.
You must have enjoyed Jose's whiskey comment. Speak up if you did.

I like Bluefinger, and I think Lemhouse did a fine job. But frankly, I never know what a producer does on a record. The title encompasses a lot of jobs and some people are like a musical director, some are more like an engineer who oversees, and some people are all vibe. I'm more of a md/vibe guy than an engineer, and I tend to hire talented engineers who I entrust to make sure everything sounds like it should.
I mean, I can get into sound manipulation and all that stuff, but I need a whole lot of time and a reasonable budget to make that kind of a record and most of the records I produce simply don't have either. So I try to capture a musical moment and make sure it's special.
Regarding the whiskey comment, I haven't tasted the stuff since I was a teenager so I wouldn't know. There wasn't any around the studios, but I'm glad to hear the music interacts well with the stuff.
Weed----well, that's another story. I don't puff and tell. Don't you know that stuff's illegal here in the U.S.?

Mr. Tiven, I'm intrigued to hear that you like "Bluefinger." I (and I'm sure many others here) would love to hear an expanded version of your thoughts on the album.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Without divulging any deep confidential communications, I enjoyed BLUEFINGER greatly when I first got it and told himself just that.
I also like the "Fort Wayne" song, and I actually think that has great commercial potential.
I don't think I have any great thoughts to illuminate you people on those subjects, so I'll let it go at that. Hope all of you and Mister Frank Black all have a great Father's Day.

Deep confidential communications? Which songs give you a hard-on? I like the title track and "Angels Come to Comfort You," but there are also days I like the punk songs at the top of the album. Which direction do you lean?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Hi Jon - if you check in again, I always wondered... Was the song 'Atlantis' different, production-wise, than the other songs from that session? I always thought it sounded amazing (the vocals and drums). Not that the other songs didn'tsound great , but this one really stood out somehow. |

"You Can't Break A Heart And Have It"---I think that's the title, I don't have a tracklist for the album---is my favorite, hands down. But there's plenty more that I dig.
"Atlantis" was not approached much differently from the rest of the album, aside from the fact that I had to go to New York and record Al Franken's vocal in Richard Lloyd's studio (Thanks Richard). Same place we recorded the unused duet from Shemekia Copeland on "Highway To Lowdown."
Now that's enough, I'm done for today/tonight.

Jon, interesting to hear your thoughts. I didn't know that the unused duet was destined for 'Highway to Lowdown'. |

Jon, Thanks for the input, as always.
Richard Lloyd described his studio to me once, and it sounded like a VERY small setup. Is it a comfortable room to track in?
I know it's fine for vocals (obviously), but I got the feeling that for tracking loud guitars and/or drums it's not ideal. The sound Richard got on the RFTT Redux CD he did there always sounded thin and harsh to me, which I chalked up to his relatively recent propensity to use Line 6 modeling amps in lieu of true AC30s (possibly so he can track at lower volume?).
Also, any personal thoughts on Lloyd's decidedly oddball "farewell" to Television in Central Park today and reports of him huffing Nitrus by the truckload in between songs (and reportedly unhinged rants) at his recent Knitting Factory solo show?
It smacks of an ill-conceived attempt to get a short burst of worldwide press for his new CD, while effectively quashing the long-awaited LP of new TV songs that have been festering for a few years...

I think it's a coffee album*. It sounds good in the morning. I played it this morning and enjoyed it.

I really like the production on HC, its not "flat" its mellow.
I think people were expecting something with a big sound after the catholics, but I couldn't think of HC being prodouced in any other way.
I've seen your picture |
